Abstract: Social media has emerged as an essential venue to invigorate online political engagement. However, political engagement is multifaceted and impacted by both individuals' selfmotivation and social influence from peers and remains challenging to model in a counterparty network. Therefore, we propose a counter-party graph representation learning model to study individuals' intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for online political engagement. Firstly, we capture users' intrinsic political interests providing self-motivation from a user-topic network. Then, we encode how users cast influence on others from the inner-/counter-party through a user-user network. With the learned embedding of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, we model the interactions between these two facets and utilize the dependency by deep sequential model decoding. Finally, extensive experiments using Twitter data related to the 2020 U.S. presidential election and the 2019 HK protests validate the model's predictive power. This study has implications for online political engagement, political participation, and political polarization. Collapse

Abstract: Mindfulness practices are valuable exercises for physical and mental health. Various digital applications exist that support individuals in practicing mindfulness. Following the trend of gamifying utilitarian systems, many mindfulness applications (MAs) incorporate game design elements (GDEs). However, little is known about users' GDE preferences in this unique context. In line with extant research that investigated users' GDE preferences in other contexts, we conducted an online survey among 168 potential users of MAs. The results indicate that users generally prefer progress, levels, and goals in MAs, while leaderboards and avatars are not highly rated. Furthermore, we identified four contextindependent and three context-dependent rationales that help explain users' GDE preferences. By providing first insights into MAs as a peculiar application context for gamification, our work contributes to advancing knowledge of contextual differences in users' GDE preferences while challenging the extant research assumptions regarding the dominance of contextual factors in forming user preferences. Abstract: Monitoring is applied in time-and-materials and revenue-sharing contracts to address the issue of non­ observability of vendor’s development effort in software outsourcing. We establish a stylized model to investi­ gate the impacts of monitoring on the client’s contract choice. Under the exogenous monitoring level, the client’s contract choice depends on its bargaining power in the negotiation of revenue-sharing. Under the endogenous monitoring level, a time-and-materials contract becomes preferable. Although revenue-sharing contract in­ centivizes more vendor’s effort, it also pushes the vendor to inflate the effort, leading to a higher monitoring level. Finally, the benefit of the stronger effort is dominated by the higher monitoring cost. Collapse

Abstract: There is an increasing number of cannabis users joining online cannabis support forums seeking social support for their withdrawal attempts. In this study we propose a research model focused on online cannabis support forums, hypothesizing about the effects of the textual features of the subject lines of discussion threads and thread-initiating messages on the quality and helpfulness of discussion threads. We tested the proposed model by analyzing 27,167 discussion threads downloaded from a large online support forum for cannabis quitters. The effectiveness of thread subject lines and the self-disclosure of emotion-related withdrawal symptoms in thread-initiating messages positively predicted the amount of informational and emotional support received in a thread. The self-disclosure of behavioral physical-related withdrawal symptoms and the diversity of self-disclosure information predicted informational support but not emotional support. Additionally, the amount of informational and emotional support received in a thread were positively associated with the thread initiator's continued discussions in the thread. Lastly, emotional support, but not informational support, predicted the overall helpfulness of a thread. Research and practical implications of the study's findings are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: While tech giants have become important external equity financing sources, it remains unclear whether ITstartups should take investments from tech giants. In this study we empirically examine how taking investments from tech giants influences future funding of IT-startups. Our results indicate that taking investments from tech giants significantly reduces the amount of funding IT-startups could obtain in the following rounds. Additionally, we find that social ties between IT-startups' regions and locations with substantial capital will attenuate such negative impact of taking investments from tech giants. We further explore the mechanisms. Results suggest that when tech giants make investments in IT-startups, they predominate the new technologies by applying for more patents in the relevant fields and crowd out new investors. We contribute to the literature in IS by examining how investments from tech giants may influence the growth of IT-startups and how social ties may play a role in this interaction. Collapse

Abstract: Due to the spatial and temporal separations between clients and freelancers, online labor markets (OLMs) are particularly susceptible to issues related to information asymmetry. Based on the economics of information, we hypothesize that the choice of contract type—i.e., between the fixed-priced (FP) contract and the time-and-materials (TM) contract—has important implications for curbing moral hazard during contract execution, and therefore will influence the client’s perceived contractual performance upon project completion. We test the predictions by assembling a dataset of data analytics projects completed by freelancers on Upwork, the largest online freelancing platform. We find that, consistent with our hypothesis, freelancers under a TM contract receive significantly lower performance ratings by their clients on average compared to those under an FP contract. Interestingly, we also find that the level of expertise required for a project moderates the effect of contract choice on client satisfaction; the negative impact of a TM contract is smaller (i.e., less negative) when a project requires intermediate-level or expert-level skills. Our study offers useful insights into an important institutional determinant of contractual performance evaluation, which has profound implications for freelancers’ reputations in OLMs. Collapse

Abstract: This study aims to explore the value of the combinational usage diversity of ES functions in employee productivity, and the potential nonlinear moderating effect of job experience. By collecting the daily ES operation log record and monthly sales record, the study provides new insights into the topic of the value of ES usage. Consistent with our hypotheses, we identified the positive impact of the combinational usage diversity of ES functions, namely combinational variety, disparity, and separation on employee performance. Meanwhile, this study presented the inverted U-shaped moderating effect of job experience on the relationship between combinational variety and separation and employee performance. Abstract: Virtual agents powered by artificial intelligence (AI) have been implemented in different service contexts, leading to changes in our daily lives. Previous studies have examined individual users' motivations to use virtual agents and the impact of virtual agents as social objects on users. However, there is a lack of knowledge on the relationship development between human and virtual agents, which could help understand the role of virtual agents in societies. In this work, we chose the mobile app Replika as our research context and used a topic-modeling approach to explore the major topics covered in online reviews about Replika on Twitter. Applying social penetration theory, we identified four stages of the relationship between users and Replika, including relationship formation, exploration, maintenance, and destruction or termination. Our findings contribute to the literature by unraveling a life circle of the relationship development between human and virtual agents. Collapse

Abstract: Companies have increasingly adopted environmental management systems (EMSs) in response to the need for improving their environmental sustainability and accountability. EMSs enable companies managing their environmental activities, supposedly leading to improved environmental performance and cost savings. However, research findings regarding the effectiveness of EMSs on key environmental and financial performance measures are inconclusive. To address this puzzle, we collected data from various sources to analyze the relationships between EMS certification, environmental performance, and financial performance for the STOXX 600 using panel data regression covering six years. With this comprehensive, large-scale approach, we account for largely neglected indirect effects and widespread validity issues of prior research, such as cross-sectional designs, perception-based performance measures, and small sample sizes. Our results show that EMS certification has a significant positive effect on environmental performance, particularly on emission reduction. We did not find a significant effect of EMS certification and environmental performance on financial performance. Collapse

Abstract: Being part of a digital societies requires a "digital mindset". But what exactly is a digital mindset? There are many answers that have not really been systematized. A related area where systematization already started is Computational Thinking (CT): a branch of pedagogy that catalogued the capabilities necessary to live in a digitized and technology-driven world. CT is defined as a general problem-solving competence based on abstraction, algorithmic-thinking, problem-decomposition, pattern-recognition, and evaluation. Researchers promote CT as a 21 st century skills important for everyone. Aim of our article is to reveal the relevance of CT as complement to IS-research in the creation of a digital mindset. We conducted a computational and qualitative literature review using quantitative bibliometric-citation analysis. From the analysis, we derive an integrative framework to identify how IS-research could profit from teaching, and applying CT, as a competence in the digital transformation of their discipline.
