Abstract: Digital technology significantly impacts our everyday social lives and how we conduct business. This development results in abundant new data generated by people and organizations. Subsequently, future technological instruments must ensure data sovereignty that empowers individuals to maintain control over their data. However, data sovereignty is still blurry and conceptually overlaps with similar terminologies, such as digital and technological sovereignty. From an Information Systems (IS) point of view, delimiting data sovereignty from digital and technological sovereignty is crucial, creating a uniform understanding, especially for data ecosystems. Our study contributes to sharpening data sovereignty with a systematic literature review of 81 articles. It concludes that data sovereignty mainly drives IS activities by protecting data assets on individual and organizational levels. In contrast, digital sovereignty is shaped by digital expertise and interoperability, while technological sovereignty is the broadest concept with regulations and relations on an international level. Abstract: To make sense of their increasingly digital and complex environments, organizations strive for a future in which machine learning (ML) systems join humans in collaborative learning partnerships to complement each other's learning capabilities. While these so-called artificial assistants enable their human partners (and vice versa) to gain insights about unique knowledge domains that would otherwise remain hidden from them, they may also disrupt and impede each other's learning. To explore the virtuous and vicious dynamics that affect organizational learning, we conduct a series of agent-based simulations of different learning modes between humans and artificial assistants in an organization. We find that aligning the learning of humans and artificial assistants and allowing them to influence each other's learning processes equally leads to the highest organizational performance. Abstract: Organizations are progressively adopting hybrid human-artificial intelligence (AI) systems in decisionmaking processes, with human decisions being augmented by AI insights. Among the promising AI applications in supply chain monitoring (SCMo) are predictive maintenance systems that predict potential device failures and augment maintenance decisions, allowing for timely and efficient interventions. Despite the growing proliferation of such systems, prescriptive knowledge encompassing technical, business, and organizational aspects on how to design, develop, and deploy them in actual operational environments remains limited. To address this shortcoming of evidence-based design principles in practice, our action design research developed a predictive maintenance system that predicts SCMo device failures and augments the maintenance decisions about those devices. By doing so, we outline generalizable design principles to guide prospective predictive maintenance systems in SCMo. Collapse

Abstract: The increasing recurrence of crises threatens the continuity of services provided by public service organizations (PSOs) to their communities, especially those in need. Beyond contingency plans, PSOs must rely on robust support information systems able to withstand transitions between day-to-day activities and crisis response with as minimal interruptions as possible. Through the analysis of experiences of use of social media analytics as a support system in PSOs, this study proposes a set of attributes that take place while transitioning between non-crisis and crisis states. The sociotechnical nature of transitions calls for a zoomed-out analysis based on shared patterns that could lead to generalization in the future. The results of our study contribute towards understanding how continuity and equilibrium are exercised in volatile and dynamic environments. In addition, our results could help organizations self-assess their social media analytics teams or other support systems within the proposed parameters. Collapse

Abstract: Conversational agents (CAs) are not likely to be error-free, and efforts are being made by research and practice to mitigate the negative consequences of such errors (e.g., reduced service satisfaction). In this context, our study examines the impact of a CA's rookie personality (i.e., the CA expresses that it is new and still learning) on users. Our findings reveal that the rookie personality is a double-edged sword: while it increases users' perception of humanness, which increases the perception of reliability, it also directly reduces perceived reliability, resulting in less service satisfaction. To explain these seemingly contradictory effects, we turn to the dual processing theory of cognition and propose that the rookie personality influences both automatic and deliberate thinking. Users actively and consciously contemplate the CA's messages, leading them to view the software artifact as "broken" and low-quality. Additionally, users' automatic thinking is influenced by the perception of humanness. Collapse

Abstract: The perception of humanness in a conversational agent (CA) has been shown to strongly impact users' processing and reaction to it. However, it is largely unclear how this perception of humanness influences users' processing of errors and subsequent intention for negative word-of-mouth (WoM). In this context, we propose two pathways between perceived humanness and negative WoM: a cognitive pathway and an affective pathway. In a 2x2 online experiment with chatbots, we manipulated both the occurrence of errors and the degree of humanlike design. Our findings indicate that perceived humanness effects users' intentions towards negative WoM through the cognitive pathway: users' confirmation of expectations is increased by perceived humanness, reducing negative WoM intentions. However, it has no effect on users' anger and frustration and does not interact with the effects of errors. For practice, our results indicate that adding humanlike design elements can be a means to reduce negative WoM. Collapse

Abstract: A novel graph model with time-varying altitudes is developed to interpret the trade disputes between China and the United States (US) during the period between 2017 and 2019. The implementation of strategies for China and the US was affected by their bilateral relations represented by mutual attitudes changing over time along the evolution of the disputes. The Goldstein scale, a numeral system for studying foreign policies and for describing the fluctuating diplomatic relations affected by historical events, is utilized for eliciting preference relations affected by the time-varying attitudes for the first time. By considering two decision makers (DMs) in the trade disputes, the time varying unilateral improvements (TVUIs) for each DM are initiated based on its judgement which reflects not only the gains or losses for the given DM, but also those for the other DM. In investigating the real-world trade disputes between China and the US, the reasoning of imposing retaliating tariffs for the two countries under time frame is explained. How the fluctuation of time-varying altitudes affects the course of the disputes is also demonstrated. The Phase one agreement legally prohibiting retaliation using tariffs from the two countries was signed when mutual attitude increased by positive interstate events, which eventually ended the tit-for-tat situation. This novel methodology extends the structure of attitudes in graph model by flexibly depicting the fluctuation of mutual attitudes using Goldstein scoring system. Meaningful implications can be provided for DMs to explain how equilibrium can be changed by the time-varying attitudes. In analyzing international disputes in particular, nations can be clearly guided to achieve desired outcomes by making efforts to change bilateral or multilateral relations. Collapse

Abstract: Algorithmic control (AC) is an emerging phenomenon shaping the future of work. While AC is already well established in the platform economy, it is also gaining traction in traditional organizations. Given that AC represents a new phenomenon, it still suffers from a relatively immature conceptual basis. Here, an up-and-coming conceptual AC framework is the so-called "6R" framework by Kellogg et al. (2020). This framework, however, has not been conceptually and empirically validated yet, which is the focus of the study at hand. To validate the 6R framework, we use a combination of a literature review (topdown) and interviews (bottom-up). Our study sets forth to refine and extend the framework, resulting in an updated 5RSM framework of AC. The proposed framework represents an updated conceptualization of AC, applicable to both platform and traditional work settings, and lays the foundation for future research, including scale development. Abstract: Gamification utilizes game-like features to engage participants, widely implemented in a variety of contexts. Such an IT-enabled engagement strategy serves as a marketing device to boost sales and customer loyalty. This study focuses on two significant game elements (i.e., badges and leaderboards) that promote consumer motivations and social comparisons. To qualify the impacts, we conduct a randomized field experiment at one of the largest shopping malls in Asia. In the experiment, we contrast the two elements against coupons regarding various shopping outcomes. A two-period design (consisting of the treatment and posttreatment periods) identifies the long-term behavior changes after the treatment removals. The main results suggest that badging and leaderboarding promote sales by 21.5% and 22.5% in the treatment period, respectively, whereas couponing delivers a more potent effect of 31.7%. In the posttreatment period, the gamification impacts remain significant compared with the baseline, but the influence of couponing fades out. Besides, the additional analyses document the salient heterogeneous treatment effects across demographics. We further discover the substantial differences in the within-group heterogeneity across the treatments. Specifically, badging is a balanced tool for attracting the general public, whereas leaderboarding is a double-edged sword that could encourage self-reinforcing or self-banishing. Finally, gamification brings more explorations that lead to additional sales and engagements. Abstract: Digital transformation (DT) is widely acknowledged as an effective strategy to enhance revenue and business operations efficiency. However, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) often face significant challenges in implementing DT initiatives due to their inherent resource constraints, such as limited financial resources or a small workforce. Unfortunately, existing literature on how SMEs can effectively embrace digital transformation is limited; available frameworks are primarily tailored to large organizations with more resources. Hence, this study aims to develop a pragmatic DT framework specifically designed to aid SMEs in overcoming resource constraints that impede their successful DT transformation, while also leveraging their agile capability. The digital transformation framework was developed by combining prior literature with insights gathered through focus group discussions with industry experts from various industries. Our research contributes to the existing digital transformation literature by formulating a novel resource-considerate framework that caters to SMEs' unique characteristics, allowing them to implement DT initiatives without overburdening their limited resources.
