Abstract: Data science has been described as the fourth paradigm of scientific discovery. The latest wave of data science research, pertaining to machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), is growing exponentially and garnering millions of annual citations. However, this growth has been accompanied by a diminishing emphasis on social good challenges-our analysis reveals that the proportion of data science research focusing on social good is less than it has ever been. At the same time, the proliferation of machine learning and generative AI has sparked debates about the sociotechnical prospects and challenges associated with data science for human flourishing, organizations, and society. Against this backdrop, we present a framework for "data science for social good" (DSSG) research that considers the interplay between relevant data science research genres, social good challenges, and different levels of sociotechnical abstraction. We perform an analysis of the literature to empirically demonstrate the paucity of work on DSSG in information systems (and other related disciplines) and highlight current impediments. We then use our proposed framework to introduce the articles appearing in the JAIS special issue on data science for social good. We hope that this editorial and the special issue will spur future DSSG research and help reverse the alarming trend across data science research over the past 30-plus years in which social good challenges are attracting proportionately less attention with each passing day. Abstract: Social engineering attacks are currently the most cited cybersecurity threat to organizations. Phishing emails are the most salient form of social engineering attacks. Organizations are increasingly implementing AI-enabled systems to detect phishing emails. However, AI-enabled systems are often susceptible to textual perturbations, where an adversary makes a small change to cause a misclassification. In this study, we sought to identify the performance of prevailing phishing email detection systems (PEDS) against character, word, sentence, and multi-level adversarial text perturbations. Through a principled benchmarking framework, we quantitatively demonstrated the lack of robustness prevailing PEDS have to specific types of text-based adversarial perturbations (e.g., character, word, sentence, multi-level). The results of this study provide new insights into the robustness of AI-based PEDS and highlight the need for organizations to adopt a multi-layered approach to phishing protection. Additionally, organizations can implement our benchmark framework to test their PEDS against adversarial perturbations. Collapse

Abstract: Accountability is crucial to make stakeholders of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based systems justify their actions, thereby explaining the harm such systems cause to AI users. Due to the importance of accountability in the context of AI, accountability was introduced into IS research through literature reviews. Therefore, while IS research's understanding of accountability covers the necessary depth, it comes at the expense of its essential breadth. Using a bibliometric analysis with 19,978 English-language papers, we shed light on the essential breadth posing three W-and one H-questions (When, What, Whereof, and How). Therefore, we contribute to IS research by highlighting the urgent need to revise existing definitions of accountability in the context of AI and establish them in IS research. We argue that a missing revision leads to non-transferrable findings within IS research. Accordingly, this study serves as a starting point for adapting definitions and creating a shared understanding in IS research. Collapse

Abstract: Online users frequently rely on social networking platforms to transmit public concerns and raise awareness about societal issues. With many government organizations actively employing social media data in recent times, the need for processing public concerns on social media has become a critical topic of interest across academic scholars and practitioners. However, the growing volume of social media data makes it difficult to process all the issues under a single umbrella, causing to overlook the main topic of interest within communication technologies, such as privacy. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, arguments on privacy and health issues exploded on Twitter, with several threads centered on contact tracking, health data gathering, and its usage by government agencies. To address the challenges of rising data volumes and to understand the importance of privacy concerns, particularly among users seeking greater privacy protection during this pandemic, we conduct a focused empirical analysis of user tweets about privacy. In this two-part research, our first study reveals three macro privacy issues of discussion distilled from the Twitter corpus, subsequently subdivided into 12 user privacy categories. The second study builds on the findings of the first study, focusing on the primary difficulties highlighted in the macro privacy subjects—contact tracing and digital surveillance. Using a document clustering approach, we present implications for the focal privacy topics that policymakers, agencies, and governments should consider for offering better privacy protections and help the community rebuild. Abstract: Although pervasive spread of misinformation on social media platforms has become a pressing challenge, existing platform interventions have shown limited success in curbing its dissemination. In this study, we propose a stance-aware graph neural network (stance-aware GNN) that leverages users' stances to proactively predict misinformation spread. As different user stances can form unique echo chambers, we customize four information passing paths in stance-aware GNN, while the trainable attention weights provide explainability by highlighting each structure's importance. Evaluated on a realworld dataset, stance-aware GNN outperforms benchmarks by 32.65% and exceeds advanced GNNs without user stance by over 4.69%. Furthermore, the attention weights indicate that users' opposition stances have a higher impact on their neighbors' behaviors than supportive ones, which function as social correction to halt misinformation propagation. Overall, our study provides an effective predictive model for platforms to combat misinformation, and highlights the impact of user stances in the misinformation propagation. Collapse

Abstract: The spreading of disinformation in social media threatens cybersecurity and undermines market efficiency. Detecting disinformation is challenging due to large volumes of social media content and a rapidly changing environment. This research developed and validated a theory-based, novel deep-learning approach (called TRNN) to disinformation detection. Grounded in social and psychological theories, TRNN uses deep-learning and data-centric augmentation to enhance disinformation detection in financial social media. Temporal and contextual information is encoded as specific knowledge about human-validated disinformation, which was identified from our unique collection of 745,139 financial social media messages about four U.S. high-tech company stocks and their fine-grained trading data. TRNN uses multiple series of long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neurons to learn dynamic and hidden patterns to support disinformation detection. Our experimental findings show that TRNN significantly outperformed widely-used machine learning techniques in terms of precision, recall, F-score and accuracy, achieving consistently better classification performance in disinformation detection. A case study of Apple Inc.’s stock price movement demonstrates the potential usability of TRNN for secure knowledge management. The research contributes to developing novel approach and model, producing new information systems artifacts and dataset, and providing empirical findings of detecting online disinformation. Abstract: Current state-of-the-art artificial intelligence struggles with accurate interpretation of out-of-library (OOL) objects. One method proposed remedy is analogical reasoning (AR), which utilizes abductive reasoning to draw inferences on an unfamiliar scenario given knowledge about a similar familiar scenario. Currently, applications of visual AR gravitate toward analogy-formatted image problems rather than to computer vision data sets. The Image Recognition Through Analogical Reasoning Algorithm (IRTARA) approach described herein shows how AR can be leveraged to improve computer vision in OOL situations. IRTARA produces a word-based term frequency list that characterizes the OOL object of interest. To evaluate the quality of the results of IRTARA, both quantitative and qualitative assessments are used, including a baseline to compare the automated methods with human-generated results. Fifteen OOL objects were tested using IRTARA, which showed consistent results across all three evaluation methods on the objects that performed exceptionally well or poorly overall. Collapse

Abstract: Combining symbolic and subsymbolic methods has become a promising strategy as research tasks in AI grow increasingly complicated and require higher levels of understanding. Targeted Aspect-based Financial Sentiment Analysis (TABFSA) is an example of such complicated tasks, as it involves processes like information extraction, information specification, and domain adaptation. However, little is known about the design principles of such hybrid models leveraging external lexical knowledge. To fill this gap, we define anterior, parallel, and posterior knowledge integration and propose incorporating multiple lexical knowledge sources strategically into the fine-tuning process of pre-trained transformer models for TABFSA. Experiments on the Financial Opinion mining and Question Answering challenge (FiQA) Task 1 and SemEval 2017 Task 5 datasets show that the knowledge-enabled models systematically improve upon their plain deep learning counterparts, and some outperform state-of-the-art results reported in terms of aspect sentiment analysis error. We discover that parallel knowledge integration is the most effective and domain-specific lexical knowledge is more important according to our ablation analysis. Collapse

Abstract: The present study develops a novel deep learning method which assists text mining of online doctor reviews to extract underlying sentiment scores. Those scores can be used to estimate a healthcare service quality model to investigate how the online doctor reviews impact the online doctor consultation demand. Based on the data from the largest online health platforms in China, our model results show that the underlying sentiment scores have statistically significant impacts on the demand of online doctor consultation. Theoretically, the present study constructs an innovative deep learning algorithm with a better performance than four widely used text mining methods, which can be applied to text mining of many online forums or social media texts. Empirically, our model results show what factors impact the health service quality and online doctor consultation demand, and following those factors, healthcare professionals can improve their service. Collaborations and Innovation in Partitioned Industries: An Analysis of U.S. Feature Film Coproductions

Abstract: In partitioned industries, a small number of generalist organizations occupy the center of the market, whereas a much larger number of specialists populate the periphery. The role of collaborations within and across the center-periphery boundary in these industries has been underexplored. We propose that hybrid collaborations between organizations in the center and periphery—combining the broad resource base of generalists with the focused knowledge of specialists—encourage product innovation and result in enhanced organizational adaptation for both populations. We test these ideas in the U.S. motion picture industry, where film production companies face significant unpredictability of success and fluctuating audience tastes. We find that generalist and specialist production companies that partner to produce films introduce more creative content in their films compared with those that collaborate in the same population or produce alone. Generalist film companies benefit further from these collaborations through increased competitive differentiation of their films from other generalists in subsequent productions, whereas specialists experience lower exit rates. These findings suggest that interorganizational collaborations between generalists and specialists provide effective adaptive strategies to compete in markets with uncertain demand and shifting audience preferences. These strategies can sustain, rather than weaken, industry partitioning. Funding: This work was funded by an ad hoc research grant from Emory University.
