Too Tired and in Too Good of a Mood to Worry About Privacy: Explaining the Privacy Paradox Through the Lens of Effort Level in Information Processing

Abstract: The confluence of digital transactions, growing cybersecurity threats, and the internet of the future (e.g., web 3.0 and the metaverse) have made information privacy increasingly important to consumers and companies that rely on consumers willingly sharing their personal information. Although information privacy has been of interest to researchers for decades and much has been learned, one thing that perplexes scholars is the privacy paradox, which we define as a mismatch between stated privacy concerns and actual disclosure behaviors. In this paper, we shed light on this phenomenon and show that low-effort information processing triggered by cognitive depletion (Experiment 1), positive mood (Experiment 2), or both (Experiment 3) significantly attenuates the association between stated privacy concerns and disclosure behaviors. These findings do not indicate that individuals do not care about privacy because we find consistent evidence in the three experiments for a significant negative association between stated privacy concerns and disclosure behaviors when individuals have sufficient cognitive capacity (Experiment 1), experience a negative (or neutral) mood (Experiment 2), or have sufficient cognitive capacity coupled with a negative mood state (Experiment 3). Our findings reveal that the paradox is neither an absolute phenomenon nor a myth, but its existence is conditional on contextual factors, including psychological factors related to information processing. Abstract: The theory of planned behavior (TPB) is popular in social commerce research, but existing studies have yielded inconclusive and inconsistent findings. As TPB was developed before the introduction of the Internet, Web 2.0 technologies, and social media, it is time to evaluate whether its relevance, effectiveness, novelty, and parsimony may have deteriorated due to temporal factors and the emergence of new Information Systems (IS) artifacts. In this work, an extended TPB2 is proposed by integrating social support, and MASEM analysis was conducted using a pooled correlation matrix. The findings revealed that TPB2 can better capture the nature of social commerce, as it can explain 28.4% of the variance in attitude, 59.0% of the variance in behavioral intention, and 9% of the variance in use behavior. In addition, it indicates that masculinity and uncertainty avoidance are the most significant Hofstedian cultural dimensions. The theoretical and managerial implications are also discussed along with the research agenda. Collapse

Abstract: Most of the information security management research involving fear appeals is guided by either protection motivation theory or the extended parallel processing model. Over time, extant research has extended these theories, as well as their derivative theories, in a variety of ways, leading to several theoretical and empirical inconsistencies. The large body of fragmented, and sometimes conflicting, research has muddied the broader understanding of what drives protection- and defensive motivation. We provide guidance to the security discourse by offering the first study in the literature to employ two-stage meta-analytic structural equation modeling (TSSEM), which combines covariance-based structural equation modeling and meta-analysis. Information systems (IS) researchers have traditionally used meta-analysis for structural equation modeling for such purposes—an approach that has several serious statistical flaws. Using 341 systematically selected empirical security articles (representing 383 unique studies) and TSSEM, we pool a large series of five datasets to test six models, from which we examine the effects of constructs and paths in the security fear-appeals literature. We compare and test six versions of models inspired by issues in the broader fear-appeals literature. We confirm the importance of both the threat- and coping-appraisal processes; establish the central role of fear and that it has greater importance than threat; show that efficacy is a stronger predictor of protection motivation than is threat; demonstrate that response costs as currently measured are ineffective but that maladaptive rewards have a strong negative effect on protection motivation and a positive effect on defensive motivation; and provide evidence that dual models of danger control and fear control should be used. Abstract: Bike-sharing provides a convenient transportation layer with its inter-connected bike station network. However, the economic value spilled by the network is unknown. This study fills this gap by empirically connecting two separate yet interrelated sharing services: bike-sharing and home-sharing. Using data from CitiBike and Airbnb, the study conducts a difference-in-difference analysis to examine the effect of new bike-sharing entries on local home-sharing performance. The results show that new bike-sharing entries increase nearby Airbnb properties' monthly revenue by $127 (9.59%). We attribute this performance improvement to the heterogeneous effects of network position. New bike stations differently improve the location attractiveness of Airbnb by riching destination choices, reducing travel costs, and avoiding traffic congestion, which account for a marginal revenue improvement of $1.41 (per reachable station), $0.27 (per second saved), and $17.36 (per dollar saved). The study also uncovers the moderating effect of first/last mile connection and property luxuriousness. Our findings have important implications for both bike-sharing network design and home-sharing marketing. Collapse

Abstract: With their human-like nature, conversational agents (CAs) introduce a social component to humancomputer interaction. Numerous studies have previously attempted to integrate this social component by incorporating trust into models such as the technology acceptance model (TAM) to decipher the adoption mechanisms related to CAs. Given the heterogeneity of these previous works, the aim of this paper is to integrate empirical evidence on the role and influence of trust within the nomological network of the TAM. For this purpose, we conduct a meta-analytic structural equation modeling approach based on 45 studies comprising k = 155 correlations, and N = 13,786 observations. Our findings highlight the multifaceted role of trust as a mediator transmitting the effects of the technology-related perceptions that drive the intention to use CAs. Our results present a comprehensive overview in a thriving research field that can guide both future theory building and the designs of more trustworthy CAs. Collapse

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) creates a new frontier of information systems, ready to be utilized by organizations. However, AI is yet to be implemented across workplaces to automate tasks and to save costs. A crucial success factor to achieve this, is the correct delegation of tasks to AI by considering the individual fit of humans, tasks, and AI. Previous literature focused on tasks' characteristics that influence the delegation decision. We argue that the effect of personal factors, such as the own involvement in the task (psychological distance) and a person's attitude towards AI affect the delegation as well. We examined these effects during an experiment (n=211). Our results indicate both factors strongly affect the predictors of AI task delegation. Our findings underline the importance of underlying personal factors for the decision and imply that the persons deciding whether a task shall be delegated to AI or not should be carefully chosen. Abstract: An increasingly popular trend in digital businesses is the adoption of the freemium model, in which premium features are provided along with free features. Because this model separates use (spending time) from purchase decisions (spending money) and people treat spending time and spending money differently, it derives two distinct types of social influence: social influence from peer spending time and peer spending money. This multiplex social influence, however, has not received sufficient attention. We investigated a popular online social game and studied how multiplex social influence jointly affects players’ spending time and spending money in a digital freemium environment. We uncovered spending time has a more substantial effect on players’ spending money than does spending money. The dependence between two different types of social influence provides evidence of multiplex social influence and its asymmetricity. We further tested and discovered that personal characteristics and network measures moderates multiplex social influence. Because the freemium model pro­ liferates in many online environments, the current study enlightens the value of free users’ social influence in the operations of businesses with freemium models. Abstract: Emerging digital technologies give rise to digital entrepreneurship and the widespread phenomenon of open source collaboration (OSC) on GitHub for entrepreneurial pursuits. Although openness is a common theme in digital entrepreneurship, it is unclear how digital startups—that is, startups that that have digital artifacts at the core of their business model for value creation and capture—actually realize value from their OSC engagement. We develop a theoretical framework to explain how the engagement in OSC may affect the value of digital startups and how the effect is contingent on the stage of venture maturity (conception, commercialization, or growth) and the mode of OSC engagement (inbound or outbound). In analyses that pool 17,552 matched digital startups with monthly panel observations between 2008 and 2017, we find digital startups in the conception and commercialization stages benefit more from inbound OSC whereas the ones in the growth stage benefit more from outbound OSC. As digital startups increasingly use OSC for ideation, experimentation, and scaling, our contribution is to show whether, when, and how knowledge flows through OSC might affect the value of digital startups. We discuss implications for research on organizing for digital entrepreneurship as well as open innovation. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce several improved Shapley values for cooperative transferable utility (TU) games depending on the players’ least square contributions instead of their marginal contributions. This work is mainly enlightened by the Shapley value and the player’s productivity-based excess (usually called the excess of the player). Based on the player’s contribution-based excess, two quadratic programming models for obtaining the players’ (weighted) least square contributions are constructed. The efficient weighted Shapley-like value proposed in this paper as an extension of the Shapley value can be characterized by four independent axioms such as the symmetry, the efficiency, the additivity, and the quasi-null player, which are almost similar to the Shapley value’s four axioms except that the anonymity is replaced with the quasi-null player. The four axioms are proven to uniquely determine the efficient weighted Shapley-like value. Finally, the advantages of the proposed values are illustrated with a real case about the collaborative profit sharing of the rural e-commerce. Collapse
