Abstract: To motivate visitors to engage with websites, e-tailers widely employ monetary rewards (e.g., vouchers, discounts) in their website designs. With advances in user interface technologies, many e-tailers have started to offer gamified monetary reward designs (MRDs), which require visitors to earn the monetary reward by playing a game, rather than simply claiming the reward. However, little is known about whether and why gamified MRDs engage visitors compared to their non-gamified counterpart. Even less is known about the effectiveness of gamified MRDs when providing certain or chance-based rewards, in that visitors do or do not know what reward they will gain for successfully performing in the game. Drawing on cognitive evaluation theory, we investigate gamified MRDs with certain or chance-based rewards and contrast them to non-gamified MRDs with certain rewards in user registration systems. Our results from a multi-method approach encompassing the complementary features of a randomised field experiment (N = 651) and a randomised online experiment (N = 330) demonstrate differential effects of the three investigated MRDs on user registration. Visitors encountering either type of gamified MRD are more likely to register than those encountering a non-gamified MRD. Moreover, gamified MRDs with chance-based rewards have the highest likelihood of user registrations. We also show that MRDs have distinct indirect effects on user registration via anticipated experiences of competence and sensation. Overall, the paper offers theoretical insights and practical guidance on how and why gamified MRDs are effective for e-tailers. Collapse

Abstract: Online cancer communities established by non-profit cancer organisations help cancer-affected people seeking information and facing emotional and psychological challenges to communicate and interact with a network of people suffering from similar issues. However, the quality features of online cancer communities from the perception of users of the information are under-researched. Using the factors credibility, content, and design, this study adopted a multi-theory perspective by integrating the Information Quality (IQ) assessment framework, the source credibility model, and the two-factor theory for website design to develop a framework to examine the quality indicators of online cancer communities. Data collected via semi-structured interviews with 14 participants showed that dimensions underlying content and credibility factors are crucial for using the online community. All dimensions underlying the design factor were essential factors, except for the visualisation of the website and privacy and data protection that constituted motivating factors for using the online community. Abstract: Online reviews are a crucial aspect of businesses' success. Thus, businesses encourage reviewers to write reviews offering concrete helpful information but such reviews are scarce. This study attempts to move beyond the traditional approaches to understanding reviewers' behavior and uses a novel lens of 'human construal'. By drawing on Construal Level Theory (CLT) we tend to understand reviewers' and readers' perceptions and utilize that for the maximization of review concreteness. Review concreteness is a semantic characteristic of a review and is considered an important aspect of reviews' perceived quality. We examine if reviewers' and readers' construal can be utilized to manipulate some factors of website design in a way that it drives reviewers to write and readers to perceive more concrete reviews and consequently enhance the overall concreteness of reviews. The study amalgamates literature from psychology, marketing, and information systems and has significant potential to benefit both businesses and consumers. Collapse

Abstract: Digital transformation's scope evolves from being limited to the organizational level to inter-organizational collaboration in supply chain networks and business ecosystems.Blockchain-enabled marketplaces have the potential to transform business networks by eliminating intermediaries. To investigate the interface design and visualization of blockchain-enabled marketplaces, we employed a design science methodology and synthesized knowledge from literature, practice, and qualitative expert interviews. Our research provides (1) theoretically grounded and prescriptive knowledge expressed in meta-requirements and design principles inspired by effective use theory, and (2) presents concrete design features and an expository prototype instantiation. The prototype is evaluated through focus group workshops and interviews with experts and potential users. Our work contributes to recent calls to investigate the design and visualization of blockchain-enabled marketplaces, advances research on blockchain applications in B2B contexts, and expands the literature on information system design for marketplace-oriented transformations. Abstract: Prior information system research remains inconsistent of the effects of system certifications. In their current use, certifications are often reduced to graphical seals. This approach fails to incorporate detailed assurance information emanating from the certification process. To address this gap, we adopt a design science approach and deploy a four-phase research design to clarify how to design impactful IS certification presentations. First, we identify sources of users' limited understanding of seals and formulate a design proposal for a certification presentation by drawing upon the elaboration likelihood model. In the second phase, we formulate and validate a set of design meta-requirements and guidelines to improve certification presentation, using cognitive load theory and Toulmin's model of argumentation as kernel theories. In the third phase, new certification presentations that comply with the proposed guidelines are developed and evaluated for their effectiveness. We show that presentations that augment seal-based certification presentations with richer assurance information improve certification effectiveness. This increases users' assurance and trust perceptions when the presentations align with the users' cognitive information processing needs in ways that reduce their cognitive load and enhance argument quality of assurance information. Abstract: While blood products are a critical resource in healthcare systems, providing sufficient blood products is a worldwide challenge, especially so since the COVID-19 pandemic. As easy and timely access to information is crucial to convince (potential) donors to change their behaviour and become regular donors, chatbots can offer fast and easy access to information whenever (potential) donors need it. Due to their human-like design, chatbots can help motivating and convincing users to donate blood regularly to work against the ongoing, post-pandemic challenges in providing sufficient blood supply. Based on previous findings, we assume that users' perception of a blood donation chatbot can vary worldwide, in relation to the incorporated design features. As part of a design science study, we conducted an online between-subject experiment with participants from USA, Germany, South Africa and India. We could show a significant negative moderating effect of horizontal individualism in terms of the chatbot's individualistic conversation style and the perceived similarity in social group membership, implicating the so-called "contribution conflict" with regard to IS and culture. Abstract: The importance of sustainability seems to be ingrained in most consumers' minds by now, yet this is not always reflected in consumers' consumption behavior. We suggest nudging as an instrument to close the gap between green consciousness and purchase decision in an environment influenced by technostress. The results, based on an experimental study with 201 participants, show that information nudging in ecommerce is a useful tool to close this gap, but that the effect is significantly weakened with increasing levels of technostress, especially in combination with an already existing high green purchase intention, suggesting cognitive strain, e.g. due to information overload. Our study contributes to the e-commerce and consumer psychology literature and extends the research by showing how digital information nudging in combination with perceived technostress in online shopping situations influence consumers' purchase decisions with respect to sustainable products. With a five-year longitudinal data set, we found that informational support contributes to both goal progress and self-reflection. Emotional support encourages patients to practice self-reflection if the goals are set for non-mental diseases. We also find that patients’ selfreflection promotes goal progress. Finally, the lack of attention control negatively affects goal progress and self-reflection. Abstract: With increasing competition in the online market, companies frequently apply "dark patterns" to steer user behavior in ways that benefit the company but may harm the user. To date, consequences of dark patterns use are rather unknown. Prior research demonstrated positive effects (e.g., an increase in acceptance rates) and negative effects (e.g., negative emotions) of dark patterns use. To explain these contradictory effects, we draw in information manipulation theory. In a survey experiment we confronted participants with the dark patterns scarcity and sneaking. The results indicate that exposure to dark patterns increases perceived violations of communication maxims, which increase perceived user manipulation. This, in turn, reduces attitude toward the website and website design. Further, the results show that perceived user manipulation is significantly higher for users with low familiarity with online shopping. We plan to validate the findings in a field experiment to be conducted in the near future. Collapse

However, due to difficulties in data collection, little research has investigated the antecedents and measurement of customer contribution. This study mainly explores the effect of overall service quality and cloud trust on consumer contribution to enhancing online customers' actual purchasing behaviors. Through literature review and expert interview, we identify five factors of overall service quality: website design, fulfillment, customer service, security/privacy, and third-party payment. The research model treats cloud trust as a second-order reflective construct driven by perceived warranty, perceived competence, consumer confidence, source credibility, and diagnosticity. The hypotheses proposed by the study help develop the best customer value management strategy in the electronic commerce industry.
