Abstract: When unexpected events occur, IT project teams need to react appropriately in order to limit the potentially negative, and sometimes disastrous consequences of such events. Yet, while past research has identified unexpected events as being an important aspect to consider when managing projects, the existing literature does not provide a clear conceptualization of this concept which limits the development of new theories and thus the ability to guide practitioners. Based on a literature review and to advance our understanding of unexpected events in IT projects and their effective management, and facilitate future theoretical developments on IT project management, the present paper develops a conceptualization that clearly distinguishes this concept from other closely related ones, as well as proposing a research framework that links it to IT project team responses and their consequences. A detailed research agenda, integrating current advances in different fields, is developed to highlight future research avenues. Collapse

Abstract: This paper investigates the major implications of blockchain technology for operations management (OM) with a focus on the decision-making processes in supply chain management (SCM) from the perspective of sustainable performance. The links between blockchain technology, OM, and sustainability issues within SCM are analysed. This two-step research study includes a broad review of the main contributions in the literature that have focused on blockchain technology and OM in SCM. It covers the airport industry from the perspective of sustainable performance and data analysis by reading and processing financial statements, non-financial reports, and the website of one strategic airport infrastructure in southern Italy. The Italian airport infrastructure investigated successfully adopted the Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) platform. This is one of the main blockchain technology applications in the airport industry. It promotes cooperation between the main players in the aviation industry and the air traffic controllers (ATCs) to reduce fragmentation, inefficiency, and uncoordinated operations. Abstract: This article aims to contribute to better understand what trust in information technology (IT) means. Past Management Information Systems (MIS) research has conceptualized trust in IT in a relatively homogeneous way as trust in IT-enabled and IT-mediated products and phenomena, neglecting trust in IT itself, and only marginally differentiate among the different sources of trust. All this make difficult to generalize findings and develop a well structured scientific corpus of knowledge about trust in IT. We re-conceptualize trust in IT and propose an integrative framework of Trust in IT Itself (TITI) to overcome the previous shortcomings. The framework is built on two axes. The first axis refers to the sources of the expectations about the IT, opposing the calculative-based trust and the not calculative-based ones. The second axis is about the attributes of the IT valued by the trustor and includes the trust in functionality of the IT and the trust in the reliability of the IT. The combination of the two axes create the conceptual space for a new definition of trust in IT itself. An empirical application of the framework is in progress. First data analysis show evidences in line with the new theoretical framework. Further research is planned to consolidate the validity of the framework. Collapse

Abstract: Recent advances in Natural Language Processing not only bear the opportunity to design new dialog-based forms of human-computer interaction but also to analyze the argumentation quality of texts. Both can be leveraged to provide students with individual and adaptive tutoring in their personal learning journey to develop argumentation skills. Therefore, we present the results of our design science research project on how to design an adaptive dialog-based tutoring system to help students to learn how to argue. Our results indicate the usefulness of an adaptive dialog-based tutoring system to support students individually, independent of a human instructor, time and place. In addition to providing our embedded software artifact, we document our evaluated design knowledge as a design theory. Thus, we provide the first step toward a nascent design theory for adaptive conversational tutoring systems to individual support metacognition skill education of students in traditional learning scenarios. Abstract: Ransomware became the face of cybercrime in 2017 when waves of attacks breached business information systems, locking critical information. At first it appeared the perfect crime where whole organizations had lost access to their vital information and the only way out was to pay the attackers in Bitcoin for the key to the lock. However, the Ransomware business model requires the formation of a trust relationship between the attacker and the victim; and the potential for the formation and maintenance of a trust relationship became rapidly eroded by identifiable points of failure. In order to better understand the phenomena we spent 12 months of emersion in an exploratory study observing the business processes and technologies associated with Ransomware. We conclude that negative risk is still apparent for unprepared organizations, but within a period of time the erosion of trust will render the Ransomware crime uneconomical and the model ineffective. Abstract: To avoid missing technological opportunities and to counteract risks, organizations have to scan and monitor developments in the external environment through a structured process of technology intelligence. Previous approaches in tech mining—the application of text mining for technology intelligence —have primarily focused on the elicitation of technical or legal information from web, patent, or research databases. However, knowledge of consumers’ needs, fears, and hopes is a prerequisite for the success of an emerging technology in the marketplace. Thus, we claim that technology intelligence needs to also consider consumers’ technology perceptions. Hence, we propose a novel and comprehensive approach to collect user-generated content from the web and apply text mining to derive consumer perceptions. In doing so, we align with an established tech-mining process. This paper illustrates our approach on the emerging technology of autonomous driving and provides an initial indication of concurrent validity. Collapse

Abstract: Google Scholar uses ranking algorithms to find the most relevant academic research possible. However, its algorithms use an exact keyword match that excludes synonymous search terms that may be overlooked or neglected by researchers. This paper aims to improve on the current Google Scholar Search System by allowing a broad topic search algorithm to diversify and allow synonymous search terms to be included and ranked with other results. The authors propose a Design Science method to improve the Google Scholar Search System by developing a broad topic prototype that will add synonymous keywords into Google Scholar ranking algorithms. The results from twenty users will be evaluated by means of Mean Reciprocal Rank and Discounted Cumulative Gain. This improvement will introduce a modern approach to academic search engines systems, and to allow researchers who overlook potential search queries, an improved core topic diversity, quality, and discoverability of published research. Abstract: Knowledge representations have greatly enhanced the fundamental human problem of information search, profoundly changing representations of queries and database information for various retrieval tasks. Despite new technologies, little thought has been given in the field of query recommendation – recommending keyword queries to end users – to a holistic approach that recommends constructed queries from relevant snippets of information; pre-existing queries are used instead. Can we instead determine relevant information a user should see and aggregate it into a query? We construct a general framework leveraging various retrieval architectures to aggregate relevant information into a natural language query for recommendation. We test this framework in text retrieval, aggregating text snippets and comparing output queries to user generated queries. We show that an algorithm can generate queries more closely resembling the original and give effective retrieval results. Our simple approach shows promise for also leveraging knowledge structures to generate effective query recommendations. Collapse

Abstract: In the last couple of years, organizations have demonstrated an increased willingness to exchange information and knowledge regarding vulnerabilities, threats, incidents and mitigation strategies in order to collectively protect against today’s sophisticated cyberattacks. As a reaction to this trend, software vendors started to create offerings that facilitate this exchange and appear under the umbrella term “Threat Intelligence Sharing Platforms”. To which extent these platforms provide the needed means for exchange and information sharing remains unclear as they lack a common definition, innovation in this area is mostly driven by vendors and empirical research is rare. To close this gap, we examine the state-of-the-art software vendor landscape of these platforms, identify gaps and present arising research perspectives. Therefore, we conducted a systematic study of 22 threat intelligence sharing platforms and compared them. We derived eight key findings and discuss how existing gaps should be addressed by future research. Collapse
