Abstract: While the data amount grows exponentially, the number of people with analytical and technical skills is only slowly increasing. This skill gap is putting pressure on the labor market and increasing the need for personnel with these skills. At the same time, companies are forced to think of alternative ways to empower their less-skilled workforce to take on Business Intelligence and Analytics (BI&A) tasks. One promising attempt to address these challenges may turn to the concept of guidance. However, the current body of research on guidance in BI&A systems is scattered and lacks a structured investigation from which future research avenues can be derived. To address this gap, this article analyzes five categories, namely BI&A phases, guidance degree, guidance generation, user roles, and interactivity form. Reviewing 82 articles, our contribution is to synopsize articles on guidance in BI&A systems and to suggest five research avenues. Collapse

Abstract: As the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into team decision-making continues to expand, it is both theoretically and practically pressing for researchers to understand the impact of the technology on team dynamics and performance. To investigate this relationship, we conducted an online experiment in which teams made decisions supported by chatbots and employed computational methods to analyze team interaction processes. Our results indicated that compared to those assisted by chatbots in later phases, teams receiving chatbot assistance during the initial phase of their decisionmaking process exhibited increased cognitive diversity (i.e., diversity in shared information) and information elaboration (i.e., exchange and integration of information). Ultimately, teams assisted by chatbots early on performed better. These results imply that introducing AI at the beginning of the process can enhance team decision-making by promoting effective information sharing among team members. Collapse

Abstract: As AI increasingly assists teams in decision-making, the study examines how technology shapes team processes and performance. We conducted an online experiment of team decision-making assisted by chatbots and analyzed team interaction processes with computational methods. We found that teams assisted by a chatbot offering information in the first half of their decision-making process performed better than those assisted by the chatbot in the second half. The effect was explained by the variation in teams' information-sharing process between the two chatbot conditions. When assisted by the chatbot in the first half of the decision-making task, teams showed higher levels of cognitive diversity (i.e., the difference in the information they shared) and information elaboration (i.e., exchange and integration of information). The findings demonstrate that if introduced early, AI can support team decision-making by acting as a catalyst to promote team information sharing. Collapse

Abstract: Human managers are increasingly challenged by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in performing managerial functions. We undertook a field experiment that used AI vis-à-vis human managers to perform structured, data-intensive evaluations of employee performance. We generate two sets of insights. First, employees considered AI to be both fairer and more accurate in evaluating their performance than the average human manager. Second, to catch up with AI, human managers' fairness perceived by employees played a first-order role by (a) helping human managers, to a greater extent than those managers' evaluation accuracy, to close the performance gap of the employees evaluated by them compared with that of those evaluated by AI, and (b) constraining the effect of human managers' perceived accuracy of evaluations on employees' performance. Thus, facing the competition from AI, it is all the more important for human managers to treat employees fairly and build positive interpersonal relationships with employees. Collapse

Abstract: The present study investigates the effects of smart speaker usage on consumers' digital content search, purchase, and consumption behaviors. Using a unique panel data set comprising information on household patterns of digital content (e.g., video on demand [VOD]) transactions and consumption and smart speaker usage, we found that the adoption of smart speakers is positively associated with the increased purchase of digital content but negatively related to the average rate of content completion. More specifically, we found that VOD content-related expenditures increased by 21.5% following smart speaker adoption but the average consumption of VOD content purchased decreased by 3.0%. We also examined millions of data points on TV remote-control use and conducted a survey via MTurk to support the validity of the findings. Smart speaker usage can reduce search costs, which subsequently increases search incidence and conversion rates, behavioral changes that can lead to a rise in purchases. We further show that the use of smart speakers for purposes other than information seeking is positively associated with purchases. We develop insights on how to elicit economic value from voice recognition technologies and provide implications for the design and implementation of effective voice commerce strategies. Collapse

Abstract: Big data analytics (BDA) and artificial intelligence (AI) may provide both bright and dark sides that may affect user participation in ridesharing. We do not know whether the juxtaposed sides of these IT artefacts influence users’ cognitive appraisals, and if so, to what extent will their participative behaviour be affected. This paper contributes to the IS research by uncovering the interplay between the dark and bright sides of BDA and AI and the underlying mechanisms of cognitive appraisals for user behaviour in ridesharing. We performed two phases of the study using mixed-methods. In the first study, we conduct 21 semi-structured interviews to develop the research model. The second study empirically validated the research model using survey data of 332 passengers. We find that the usage of BDA and AI on ridesharing platforms have a bright side (usefulness, “the good”) but also a dark side (uncertainty and invasion of privacy, “the bad and the ugly”). The bright side generates perceived benefits, and the dark side shape perceived risks in users, which discount the risks from the benefits of using the ridesharing platform. Privacy control exerts a positive effect on the perceived benefits to encourage individuals to use the ridesharing platform. Collapse

Abstract: Authentication methods on mobile devices provide an important layer of security. Many types of authentication methods exist, some traditional and some biometric-based. In this study, we use a survey method to examine whether the presence and type of an authentication method affect perceptions of risk and security concerns around three specific types of mobile device actions: banking, health, and activities with personally identifiable information (PII). We also survey users' general perceptions of trust, usefulness, convenience, and ease of use toward authentication methods, both traditional and biometric. We find that users' perceptions of risk and security concerns change when users consider the type of authentication method present on a device. While traditional methods are still more familiar to most users, we also find that perceptions of biometric-based methods are more similar to perceptions of traditional methods than in the past. Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly essential for enhancing many conventional business processes and generating market opportunities. And yet, for AI to truly gain mainstream acceptance, there is a need to develop a vast array of different applications to cater to the myriad needs of the market. This, however, cannot be achieved by any AI firm in isolation. Instead, there is a need for the collectivization of a synergistic ecosystem of entities. How such an AI ecosystem is developed, however, has not been the subject of research to date. To address this gap, we conducted a case study of iFlytek, one of the most successful AI firms in China and the world. Based on our ongoing study, we developed a theoretical framework that illustrates the stages of AI ecosystem development, which can provide guidelines for other technology firms and policymakers on the orchestration and governance of market-driven AI applications. Abstract: The essential component of studying how humans and robots relate is to observe how they interact with each other. This fact has been taken for granted until the COVID-19 pandemic made all such HRI study-based interactions verboten. We address the question of how HRI research can continue in an environment where physical distancing is the most effective approach to containing the spread of the disease. In this paper we present a pilot study that indicates that Remote-HRI (RHRI) studies can be a feasible alternative. The results suggest, importantly, that whether the participant interacts with the robot in-person (but physicallydistanced) or remotely, their perception of the robots is unaffected. We observed increased effort and frustration by participants when interacting remotely with the robot – for which there may be an underlying cultural cause. However, all participants completed their tasks with the robot and had a neutral to positive experience using it. Collapse

Abstract: In the realm of smart services, smart personal assistants (SPAs) have become a popular medium for value co-creation between service providers and users. The market success of SPAs is largely based on their innovative material properties, such as natural language user interfaces, machine learningpowered request handling and service provision, and anthropomorphism. In different combinations, these properties offer users entirely new ways to intuitively and interactively achieve their goals and thus co-create value with service providers. But how does the nature of the SPA shape value cocreation processes? In this paper, we look through a functional affordances lens to theorize about the effects of different types of SPAs (i.e., with different combinations of material properties) on users' value co-creation processes. Specifically, we collected SPAs from research and practice by reviewing scientific literature and web resources, developed a taxonomy of SPAs' material properties, and performed a cluster analysis to group SPAs of a similar nature. We then derived 2 general and 11 cluster-specific propositions on how different material properties of SPAs can yield different affordances for value co-creation. With our work, we point out that smart services require researchers and practitioners to fundamentally rethink value co-creation as well as revise affordances theory to address the dynamic nature of smart technology as a service counterpart.
