The minitrack addresses research questions concerning drivers and challenges of digital transformation, basic technologies, applications and services, digital platforms as well as cultural and organizational change etc. After a short introduction the different papers of the mini track are described and embedded into an overall context. Abstract: 5G mobile network technologies and scenarios with the associated innovations receive growing interest among academics and practitioners. Current literature on 5G technologies discusses several scenarios and specific chances and challenges. However, 5G literature is fragmented and not systematically reviewed. We conducted a scoping review on 5G applications in urban scenarios. We reviewed 1,394 papers and identified 20 studies about urban logistics and emergency indoor localization. Our review accumulates current academic knowledge on these scenarios and identifies six further research directions in four research fields. It reveals several further research opportunities, e.g., regarding trust and privacy concerns. We review and discuss 5G literature for academics and practitioners, contribute towards more tailored 5G research and reflect on cost- efficient 5G applications in urban scenarios. Collapse

Abstract: Green information systems are often praised for their potential to foster sustainability in citizens’ daily lives and meet their needs. With this focus on citizens, districts that use smart technologies provide a litmus test, the results of which will indicate how to design smart green information systems that better meet the needs and desires of citizens. To date, however, guidelines on how to design such green information systems in urban areas or actively involve citizens in this process are few and far between. In recognition and remedy of this shortage, the study draws on the design science research paradigm to develop seven design principles for citizen-centric green information systems that can be used in sustainable smart districts. These principles are evaluated in 15 semi-structured interviews and a prototype of a mobile district app for a citizen-centric green information system is instantiated. By taking this citizen-centric perspective, the paper fosters the active involvement of humans in the design of sustainable urban environments. Collapse

Abstract: The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources poses major challenges for balancing increasingly weather-dependent energy supply and demand. Demand-side energy flexibility, offered particularly by companies, is seen as a promising and necessary approach to address these challenges. Process mining provides significant potential to prevent a deterioration of product quality or process flows due to flexibilization and allows for exploiting monetary benefits associated with flexible process operation. Hence, we follow the design science research paradigm to develop PM4Flex, a prescriptive process monitoring approach, that generates recommendations for pending process flows optimized under fluctuating power prices by implementing established energy flexibility measures. Thereby, we consider company-and process-specific constraints as well as historic event logs. We demonstrate and evaluate PM4Flex by implementing it as a software prototype and applying it to exemplary data from a heating and air conditioning company, observing considerable cost savings of 1.56ct per kWh or 34.35%. Abstract: Digitization provides entirely new affordances for our economies and societies. This leads to previously unseen design opportunities and complexities as systems and their boundaries are re-defined, creating a demand for appropriate methods to support design that caters to these new demands. Conceptual modeling is an established means for this, but it needs to be advanced to adequately depict the requirements of digitization. However, unlike the actual deployment of digital technologies in various industries, the domain of conceptual modeling itself has not yet undergone a comprehensive renewal in light of digitization. Therefore, inspired by the notion of Industry 4.0, an overarching concept for digital manufacturing, in this commentary paper, we propose Modeling 4.0 as the notion for conceptual modeling mechanisms in a digital environment. In total, 12 mechanisms of conceptual modeling are distinguished, providing ample guidance for academics and professionals interested in ensuring that modeling techniques and methods continue to fit contemporary and emerging requirements. Abstract: Critical infrastructure (CIs) such as power grids link a plethora of physical components from many different vendors to the software systems that control them. These systems are constantly threatened by sophisticated cyber attacks. The need to improve the cybersecurity of such CIs, through holistic system modeling and vulnerability analysis, cannot be overstated. This is challenging since a CI incorporates complex data from multiple interconnected physical and computation systems. Meanwhile, exploiting vulnerabilities in different information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) systems leads to various cascading effects due to interconnections between systems. The paper investigates the use of a comprehensive taxonomy to model such interconnections and the implied dependencies within complex CIs, bridging the knowledge gap between IT security and OT security. The complexity of CI dependence analysis is harnessed by partitioning complicated dependencies into cyber and cyber-physical functional dependencies. These defined functional dependencies further support cascade modeling for vulnerability severity assessment and identification of critical components in a complex system. On top of the proposed taxonomy, the paper further suggests power-grid reference models that enhance the reproducibility and applicability of the proposed method. The methodology followed was design science research (DSR) to support the designing and validation of the proposed artifacts. More specifically, the structural, functional adequacy, compatibility, and coverage characteristics of the proposed artifacts are evaluated through a three-fold validation (two case studies and expert interviews). The first study uses two instantiated power-grid models extracted from existing architectures and frameworks like the IEC 62351 series. The second study involves a real-world municipal power grid. Abstract: With an excess of interconnected devices, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies offer an exciting area for information systems researchers; however, the inherently physical nature of IoT makes it difficult to provide hands-on laboratory exercises to remote students. Research suggests that enactive mastery provides the greatest educational improvement to individual self-efficacy, yet not all enactive experiences are the same, certainly not when individuals have no means of accessing materials physically. Through the use of a virtual laboratory and home automation IoT technology, we develop a method to teach IoT in remote settings where students can experience hands-on IoT training in remote settings. We experimentally evaluate the virtual laboratory by comparing student outcomes in a traditional setting using physical materials to those using the virtual laboratory. Results indicate that while student perceptions were lower for students using the virtual laboratory, this virtual laboratory was successful in offering students the means to perform hands-on IoT automation, with these students achieving equivalent performance metrics to those utilizing a traditional physical laboratory. Abstract: This paper represents the Phase II report of the Management Curriculum for the Digital Era (MaCuDE) disciplinary task force on information systems (IS). Aligned with the current work of the AIS (Association for Information Systems) and ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), we focus on the current and future industry driven educational needs and requirements posed by big data analytics (BDA), artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and related innovations. In this report, we probe and report on the views of industry leaders regarding BDA/AI education needs. We conducted 18 rich semi-structured interviews with a representative sample of industry leaders situated around key changes and issues related to workforce demands in digital transformation and associated educational needs. We performed a grounded theory based analysis of key themes in reported education needs. We note the shifting meaning of AI and BDA phenomena and identify three main organizational level needs for the digital eracapability improvement and transformation, decision-making strategies and tactics, and changes in operations or products -and connect them to three individual professional competencies necessary to deliver them: fundamental environmental competencies, data information and content, and system design competencies. Based on the analysis we outline several novel competency-based IS curriculum recommendations for the master's and undergraduate level IS education.Architecting for cloud: "And so the thing I noticed, a lot of these companies, when their data is growing so big and their database costs are running so high, they think about going towards Open Source Software, Open Source databases to store all the data and, hence, that creates a demand on the workforce to actually know how to use those. "Understanding data structures, architectures, and governance: "So that's his role, and the key requirement for that role again is Data Architecture, data Engineering and Data Management" Building and managing machine learning models: "Second, of course, is strong competency in the use of Machine Learning packages or models. This field is evolving aggressively." "For developing or programming our own AI solutions, our employees have no deep knowledge of mathematical models and how to build mature and value-creating AI applications." IS management and operations: "The talent sort of wars out there are really, really tough, and finding people who understand that, (how to) generate the data, use the data, think about the data, manipulate it are really, really important. I agree. It used to be you had to have people with Project Management. That was critical and that was everyone competed for that, and now it's that plus the data, the Machine Learning."Based on the data collected in this study, we cannot offer a clear answer to the questions of how BDA and AI affect areas that do not belong to the two main areas of the study. Given, however, how quickly BDA and AI have grown and how substantial related resource requirements are in organizations, it is clear that they already have an impact on several competency needs such as programming language selection, selection of BDA and AI tools based on cloud-based solutions, data architecture, data governance, service repertoires available on platform environments, and special characteristic of BDA and AI projects and how they affect education for project management needs and competencies. Summary of Findings Related to Individual CompetenciesGenerally, we observe a strong alignment and continuity between the recent information systems curriculum recommendations and the findings of this study. The data highlights the continued importance of IS core topics covered in all past curricula, such as data management, systems development, IT infrastructure and architecture (including security), and IS (project) management.The results also highlight also multiple areas that need more emphasis and careful design decisions when schools plan and implement their BDA and AI based programs: Integration of business and technology competencies in ways that allow seamless communication with both business and technology experts  A stronger emphasis on multiple life cycle models and concepts related to data management and data science than in the recent model curricula focused on system life cycles  Heightened focus on new dimensions of data analytics competencies (including communication-related elements such a storytelling and visualization)  The growing importance of ethics as a foundation for ensuring privacy and security of BDA and AI models  Need for more skills in statistics  Understanding the novel requirements that AI solutions set up for IT infrastructure  The importance of competencies in AI systems development and deployment. Abstract: Although sociomaterial theorizing has provided important insights into how digital technologies enable or constrain behavior in organizational contexts, there is a need to advance theory to better account for how digital technologies shape heterogeneous work practices in which distributed organizational actors use diverse technology portfolios to collaboratively produce and consume information. Against that backdrop, we draw on the distinction between digital mediation and digital representation to investigate tensions in how actors transfer information across organizational and technological boundaries, how they translate information into meaning, and how they eventually transform information into action in digitalized work. We illustrate and develop this framing through detailed analyses of digitally enabled, condition-based maintenance of equipment in a mining context. Drawing on these analyses and extant literature, we advance theory on tensions in how digital technologies are implicated in producing and consuming information in today’s increasingly heterogeneous work practices.
