Abstract: For most car and truck manufacturers access to information about the status of produced vehicles end with their sale. With embedded connectivity units this changes so that manufacturers can gather data from vehicle in-build sensors and thus, gain insights into each products usage. Our study investigates why manufacturers aim to integrate connectivity units into their products to gather sensor based usage information and what hinders them to do so. Thereby, we aim to identify the factors that have an influence on the decision of vehicle manufacturers to adopt the concept of the vehicle digital twin. To unveil those factors, we conducted 30 expert interviews at two vehicle manufacturers in which we found benefits and barriers regarding the realization of a product digital twin. By conceptualizing the benefits and barriers, which have a positive or negative influence on the adoption decision from the perspective of the manufacturers, we were able to derive general influences on the adoption decision. In our adapted technology-organization-environment framework we found influences in the technological (i.e. product data and product heterogeneity), the organizational (i.e. business model orientation, readiness of internal processes and digital culture) and the environmental (i.e. competitors behaviour, legal regulations and customer demand) dimension. Abstract: Electronic commerce can improve market efficiency by helping buyers and sellers find and transact with each other across geographic distance. We study the effect of two distinct forms of electronic commerce on market efficiency, which we measure via the existence and exploitation of spatial arbitrage opportunities. Spatial arbitrage represents a more precise measure of market efficiency than does price dispersion, which is typically used, because it accounts for the transaction costs of trading across distance and for unobserved product heterogeneity. One of the forms of electronic commerce that we study is a webcast channel that allows electronic access to the traditional physical market, while the other is a standalone electronic market. Both forms provide traders with expanded reach to find and transact with each other across geographic distance, but only one allows traders to conduct transactions immediately, at any time. This variance helps us isolate the effect of these mechanisms (reach and transaction immediacy) on efficiency. We find that electronic commerce reduces the number of arbitrage opportunities (likely by expanding traders’ geographic reach) but improves arbitrageurs’ ability to identify and exploit those that remain (likely by expanding arbitrageurs’ reach and providing them with the immediacy to exploit opportunities quickly). Overall, our results suggest that electronic commerce improves market efficiency not only by helping buyers and sellers transact across distance (thereby balancing supply and demand across geographic locations) but also by helping arbitrageurs quickly exploit any remaining arbitrage opportunities (thereby rebalancing supply and demand across geographic locations). Abstract: Markets can yield significant economic benefits by improving transaction efficiency, but effective design is necessary to achieve these benefits. We compare a physical market to a discrete electronic market in the wholesale used vehicle industry to evaluate how their different designs work for different types of transactions. We find that buyers and sellers balance adverse selection costs and other transaction costs when using the two markets, with the physical market serving as the general exchange and the electronic market serving as a spot market for vehicles with low adverse selection risk. These findings increase our understanding of how sellers and buyers distribute supply and demand between physical and electronic markets in industries in which they coexist. They also increase our understanding of how information technology can improve market function in wholesale environments. Collapse

Abstract: In the blizzard of social media postings, isolating what is important to a corporation is a huge challenge. In the consumer-related manufacturing industry, for instance, manufacturers and distributors are faced with an unrelenting, accumulating snow of millions of discussion forum postings. In this paper, we describe and evaluate text mining tools for categorizing this user-generated content and distilling valuable intelligence frozen in the mound of postings. Using the automotive industry as an example, we implement and tune the parameters of a text-mining model for component diagnostics from social media. Our model can automatically and accurately isolate the vehicle component that is the subject of a user discussion. The procedure described also rapidly identifies the most distinctive terms for each component category, which provides further marketing and competitive intelligence to manufacturers, distributors, service centers, and suppliers. Abstract: In recent years the modern vehicle has developed into a sophisticated sensor and computing environment. This development has been motivated by an ambition to enhance operations. In order to increase customer service and revenues, vehicle manufacturers are now interested in using the sensor data generated in the vehicle for remote vehicle services, i.e., mobile services connecting the vehicle to service stations while on the road. Our results from three years of case studies in collaboration with a vehicle manufacturer indicate, however, that it will not be possible to make such services profitable unless the vehicle manufacturer is willing to open up the vehicle for external service providers. The reluctance to do so, we argue, is a consequence of the product focus still characterizing vehicle manufacturers, in spite of a growing understanding of the need for a more customer oriented service perspective. Using information infrastructure theory, we argue for an open information infrastructure that can distribute costs, and support the development of both product and customer oriented services across different business sectors. Our paper is a contribution to information infrastructure theory and to a theory of services, by pointing out some important dependencies between services and information infrastructures. Collapse
