Abstract: The omnipresence of digital platforms (DPs) across industries yields platform-based business concepts that disrupt the road freight market, enabling the digitalization of road freight transport management (RFTM). However, the data-driven service capabilities of DPs in supporting RFTM are manifold, and platform research provides opportunities to explore the emerging digital business concepts following the core process of transport management systems (TMSs). This, in particular, results from the side of road freight operators engaged in the transport management process that are increasingly forced to provide customer-centric RFTM via DPs to remain profitable and competitive within a fragmented business environment. Against this backdrop, this paper aims to explore DPs in the road freight transport domain to gain insights into digital freight services and support logistics companies involved in the transportation process with a novel navigation for the identification of required platform-based services. Following the grounded theory methodology, we present a morphological box encompassing 14 dimensions and eight DP types aligned to RFTM. We reveal digital services of DP visibility, optimization, and analytics. With the insights obtained by our research, we contribute to developing a comprehensive understanding of DPs for the enhanced decision-making of transport stakeholders in the area of digital transport management. Our findings provide an established theoretical research ground that guides platforms as markets for practitioners and proposes further research avenues for scholars toward data-driven and digitalized transport logistics. Abstract: Information technology (IT) has been established as a major enabler for business performance. However, studies of the effects of IT typically involve the implicit assumption that the effects reported by the companies studied adequately and accurately describe IT’s effects. In this paper, we challenge this perspective by arguing that in many cases the perceived and actual effects of IT are different. Although most IT researchers likely recognize the discrepancy, this topic has not received much attention. Thus, through a case at a world-leading logistics company, we provide evidence that perceived and actual effects of IT can differ. On this basis, we develop a set of models that describe such discrepancies and use theories from the psychological literature to explain why the discrepancies occur. In this context, we use the term “midlife crisis” as a metaphor for what happens to decision makers’ perception of IT systems after a period of use. Collapse

Abstract: Despite substantial investments in transportation infrastructures, road congestion in urban areas has not abated. While there is a growing interest among policymakers in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), the role of ITS in road congestion has not been established. To investigate the effect of ITS on road congestion, we utilized a unique dataset on traffic and ITS adoption from 99 U.S. urban areas in 2001-2008. The results from fixed-effects estimations show that ITS adoption reduces road congestion, saving an average driver 98 minutes of driving time and $38 per year. We also obtained preliminary evidence that ITS reduces carbon emissions by alleviating road congestion. Our findings extend the emerging IS literature on IT value in the public sector and the societal impacts of IT. Our study also contributes to the transportation economics literature and informs transportation policymakers by showing that ITS could be a cost-effective alternative to tackle road congestion. Abstract: In today’s ever changing consumer driven market economy, it is imperative for providers to respond expeditiously to the changes demanded by the customer. This phenomenon is no different in the transportation sector in which a service-oriented Group Decision Support System (GDSS) provides an important role in transportation enterprise to effectively manage and rapidly respond to the varying needs of the customer. In this paper, we explore the integration problem of service-oriented system and intelligence technology through the use of a GDSS. Initially, we analyze a service-oriented architecture and then, propose the design architecture of a service-oriented GDSS. Next, we put forward a general framework that integrates the intelligent techniques as a component into the architecture of service oriented GDSS. In addition, we illustrate how Artificial Intelligence techniques can resolve the conflicts of distributed group decisions. The paper is concluded by providing a number of applications in the railway management system that demonstrates the benefits of the utilization of a service oriented intelligent GDSS. Collapse
