Abstract: Digital transformation is changing the world landscape with the rise of new technologies such as social media, IoT, blockchain, big data, etc. However, despite the multiplicity of technological novelties and recipes for their successful implementation, whether in business, public administration, or private life, these initiatives are taking much longer and facing more difficulties than has been expected. During the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and with the implementation of social distancing, digital transformation has become a major issue. Nevertheless, while adopting the same was inevitable, the world has encountered several challenges to do that. Thus, this study aims to understand the role of digital transformation during the Covid-19 pandemic, by analyzing several mini-cases in Brazil. Therefore, via an integrative approach, one analyzed the positive, negative, and unforeseen outcomes accrued from digital transformation initiatives in Brazil, unveiling potential challenges and opportunities for technology in a post-Covid-19 reality. Abstract: Given the persistent prevalence of gender imbalances in the IT profession, IS researchers developed numerous theories that attempt to explain women's decisions to pursue or to refrain from pursuing a career in IT. Those theories were recently criticized for still not being able to solve the problem of gender imbalances through interventions that are effective in the long-run. This criticism seems all the more important considering that gender inequality is even more serious in some sub-sections of IT than in others, for which one example is blockchain. We use an appreciative interview approach, focussing on the lived experiences of women working on blockchain, to explore factors that foster or constrain women's decisions to work in the field of blockchain, thereby extending existing IS gender theories. Based on the analysis of thirty-eight appreciative interviews, we successively develop a combined model of social identity and individual difference theory of gender and IT (IDT), which is expected to capture more factors influencing women's decisions than IDT alone. Particularly to be emphasized is the ability of the combined model to explain within-and out-group dynamics and the salience of social and role identity that are currently under-researched in gender-related IS research. Abstract: The increased digitalization of work results in practices that are increasingly networked and knowledge-based. As such, we need to continuously inquire how digital technology leads to changes in work and not be content knowing that it leads to change. This paper contributes to advancing such knowledge through an analysis of digitalized condition-based maintenance of machinery in a Swedish iron ore mine. Drawing on the distinction between digital representation and digital meditation figurations of human and material agency, we analyze how the distributed network of workers used a diverse portfolio of digital technologies to make complex knowledge-based decisions on when and how to maintain the mining machinery. We combine these empirical insights with extant literature to advance a new theoretical perspective on how key characteristics of digital technologies are implicated in networked, knowledge-based work practices. Abstract: The increased digitization of organizational processes and products poses new challenges for understanding product innovation. It also opens new horizons for information systems research. We analyse how ongoing pervasive digitization of product innovation reshapes knowledge creation and sharing in innovation networks. We argue that advances in digital technologies (1) increase innovation network connectivity by reducing communication costs and increasing its reach and scope and (2) increase the speed and scope of digital convergence, which increases network knowledge heterogeneity and need for integration. These developments, in turn, stretch existing innovation networks by redistributing control and increasing the demand for knowledge coordination across time and space presenting novel challenges for knowledge creation, assimilation and integration. Based on this foundation, we distinguish four types of emerging innovation networks supported by digitalization: (1) project innovation networks; (2) clan innovation networks; (3) federated innovation networks; and (4) anarchic innovation networks. Each network involves different cognitive and social translations – or ways of identifying, sharing and assimilating knowledge. We describe the role of five novel properties of digital infrastructures in supporting each type of innovation network: representational flexibility, semantic coherence, temporal and spatial traceability, knowledge brokering and linguistic calibration. We identify several implications for future innovation research. In particular, we focus on the emergence of anarchic network forms that follow full-fledged digital convergence founded on richer innovation ontologies and epistemologies calling to critically re-examine the nature and impact of modularization for innovation. Abstract: We present a model of IT-enabled social innovation. Our model draws on the theoretical lens of social shaping of technology and the role of villagers-turned-netrepreneurs, as reference actors in the context of rural e-commerce development. The model is built on stage-wise observations of intermediary roles that villagers play and how these roles enhance or decrease in importance in the biography of rural to e-commerce villages’ transformations across China in recent years. In this research-in-progress paper, we present a case study of Daji, China’s first “Taobao performance costumes town”, located in rural Shandong province. Our preliminary model prescribes three mechanisms− advancing, authenticating and attaching−that are enacted by reference actors in the process of negotiating rural e-commerce development in their communities, and also resurrect heritage and community identity. Our model builds on conjectural discussion in recent IS research on the expanding role of the users in influencing the development of IT-enabled social innovations. Collapse

Abstract: In this research-in-progress paper, we present a preliminary model of how reference users shape enterprise systems (ES) acquisition and development based on the case study of Xizi Holdings, one of the largest private enterprises in China. Our model draws on the theoretical lens of the social shaping of technology in the context of streamlining complex packaged ES adoption. The model is built on stage-wise observations of the roles that reference users play across the ES acquisition and development process. Our preliminary model identifies three intermediary mechanisms (i.e. attaching, staging and shaping of technology) that are enabled by reference users in the process of negotiating ES acquisition and development. It contributes to the existing discourse in recent IS research on the expanding role of users in influencing the development of packaged enterprise systems and their acquisition. Collapse

Abstract: The paper extends the concept of "user" to account for a new, more formalized role that some client organizations play in the diffusion of packaged enterprise systems. Package vendors are attempting to draw parts of their user base into activities related to the promotion, selling, and commodification of systems. Users, in turn, appear willing to help construct these systems as objects of consumption for others. This can appear to be rather idiosyncratic behavior. Information Systems scholars have argued that relations between packaged enterprise system vendors and users are attenuated. Why might the user help the vendor market its systems in this way? What benefits accrue from it? And what role are users performing in carrying out this work? To show how this is becoming a general facet of the work of some packaged enterprise system users, we develop the notion of "reference actor," which is an extension of the earlier Information Systems concept of "social actor." In combining insights from the social shaping of technology and the biography of artifacts, and drawing on long-term qualitative fieldwork, we analyze this new actor role in relation to expectations and commitments coming from the wider packaged enterprise system community. In return for the help provided to prospective adopters, reference actors are also able to gather various kinds of benefits for themselves and others. In particular, they build closer relations with vendors such that they can influence product development strategies. Collapse

Abstract: ERP systems are highly integrated and complex systems. These systems have become a core technology in many businesses since the past two decades; however, the implemented systems do not always bring about the planned results and still many ERP implementations fails to achieve the desired benefits. This is mainly because of the way these organisations have implemented ERP and the way this technology has been institutionalised within the organisations. ERP institutionalisation, however, occurs when its usage becomes stable, routinized and embedded within the organisation’s work processes and value chain activities. Many research has been studied the success/ failure factors associated with ERP implementation which is valuable for advanced understanding of ERP implementation success, however, alone it is not sufficient for explaining social and cultural issues in institutionalisation of ERP systems. This research, thus, aims to fill this gap by offering a preliminary framework which studies the socio-cultural drivers influencing various stages of assimilation process within organisations. Towards the next stage of this research, the authors will engage different Australian organisations who use ERP systems in their organisations to investigate socio-cultural aspects which managers should consider through initiation, adoption and routinization of ERP usage. The refined version of this framework, obtained after qualitative analysis of gathered data, may be mastered as a decision making tool by business manager to guide the organisation through various stages of ERP assimilation and institutionalisation. Abstract: Despite the institutional push for all businesses to embrace new forms of Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs) and ‘get online’, it is evident that take-up amongst businesses has been highly uneven, with some cautious in their adoption and others not adopting, with the possibilities offered not being exploited. To understand this, a multi-method approach has been used to provide different lenses through which to observe the online practices of a specific group of practitioners. Analysis was performed using a modified version of Silverstone's (1992) domestication framework. It is proposed that users embed (internalise) online technologies within their ‘busy day’ — which often requires much effort and involves configuration and learning (learning by trying). It is concluded that the apparently deterministic institutional view of the benefit of online technologies and the imperative that they are fully exploited to give competitive advantage, can be at odds with the locally contingent and diverse nature of online practices.
