Abstract: Interaction with technology involves not only externally directed cognition, but also internally directed cognition. Although the information systems (IS) field has made a significant progress toward understanding of how individuals use technology, more emphasis has been given to goal-directed external activity that requires focused external attention and less or no emphasis on goal-directed internal activity called mind wandering. Drawing upon the emerging cognitive neuroscience literature, the current research investigates the relationships between self-regulation, mind wandering, and cognitive absorption. Specifically, we hypothesize there is a U-shape relationship between mind wandering and cognitive absorption. Based on a cross-sectional study of 323 individuals, the results reveal that the relationship between mind wandering and cognitive absorption is curve-linear. As mind wandering increases, cognitive absorption decreases to a certain point, after which, cognitive absorption increases as mind wandering increases. The results also show self-regulation has a significant effect on mind wandering and cognitive absorption. Collapse

Abstract: People with an autism spectrum disorder face the daily challenge of social interactions – particularly in non-verbal communication. These difficulties make adequate interpersonal interactions “in realtime” a challenging obstacle to overcome in many cases and can lead to excessive demands, frustration and isolation (low level of Theory of Mind). Emotion cards are usually used in autism therapy to learn basic skills for recognizing emotions. Learning with autism is characterized by spontaneous – sometimes-extraordinary – mastery of complex contents. People with autism learn facts, details and routines well but have difficulties to transfer the learned contents to another context (Weak Central Coherence) or to react flexible to unpredicted events (low Executive Function). In addition, research has shown that autistics learn social competences while using a computer and performing practical exercises. Such systems provide the possibility to use an accepted computer simulated (virtual) environment in which autistic children can be taught social competences as emotion recognition. Consequently, we assume that learning emotion recognition in virtual learning environments can remove barriers and obstacles for autistics as they are more successful in solving social problems. Therefore, we are discussing in the paper at hand the potentials of how emotion recognition can be learned in virtual reality. Collapse

Abstract: Extended AbstractThe use of social networking sites (SNS) has soared to an all-time high, during the last decade. Recent statistics show that an online user spends on average 135 minutes per day on using SNS. In addition recent information systems (IS) research shows that excessive and sometime compulsive of SNS can have . In light of such outcomes, we have witnessed a rise in public's interest to take a break from technologies such as smartphones, emails, social networking sites (SNS), and online games (Perlow, 2012). For instance, one study among SNS users reported that each user on average knows 3.32 people (excluding themselves) who have tried to quit using an SNS (Turel & Bechara, 2017). Yet, for many, efforts to get a temporary or permanent distance from SNS appear to fail or are very difficult to maintain. Due to the adverse outcomes of excessive and compulsive SNS use andoutcomes of abstinence efforts (e.g. less distraction, improved self-control, etc.), this is an important issue that can provide important theoretical and practical implications.SNS abstinence refers to user's efforts to prevent from engaging in SNS use temporarily or permanently. While there exists much research that taps on the psychological, social and neurological basis of abstinence, our review showed that there exists no unifying theory to explain what contributes to abstinence success or a failure (i.e. lapse). Furthermore, despite the existing knowledge on how individuals adopt SNS and what explains continued use and post-adoption, we have not found information systems (IS) research to explore users' attempts to take a break from SNS and why many fail to maintain it after they decided to do so. This paper examines SNS abstinence, and the nomological network of factors underlying the phenomenon. Specifically, it seeks to answer two research questions: 1) What is SNS abstinence? 2) What are antecedents and outcomes of SNS abstinence? Abstract: Organizations increasingly use virtual groups for many types of work, yet little research has examined factors that make groups perform better across multiple different types of tasks. Previous research has proposed that groups, like individuals, have a general factor of collective intelligence, an ability to perform consistently across multiple types of tasks. We studied groups that used computer-mediated communication (CMC) to investigate whether collective intelligence is similar or different when groups work using CMC. A collective intelligence factor did not emerge among groups using CMC, suggesting that collective intelligence manifests itself differently depending on context. This is in contrast to previous findings. Our results surface a need for more research on boundary conditions of the construct of collective intelligence. Our findings also have practical implications: managers should take care when organizing virtual group work because groups that perform well on one type of task will not necessarily be the groups that do well on other tasks Collapse

Abstract: Prior research on user behavior in online innovation contests has mainly focused on factors that positively impact prosocial, collaborative behavior, which should ultimately lead to innovative outcomes. However, little is known about the effects of more negative personal characteristics that might result in more competitive, antisocial, and even unethical behavior. This paper considers Machiavellianism as one of the traits that constitute the “dark triad of personality” and explores the relationship between Machiavellianism and participants’ contribution behavior in online innovation contests. Specifically we investigate how Machiavellian characteristics influence individuals’ contribution intensity, communication, and interaction behavior within the contest community as well as the quality and kind of their contributions. This study relies on multisource individual-level data from a large innovation contest in the field of public transportation. We find that the three dimensions of Machiavellianism—distrust of others, amorality, and desire for status—have very distinct behavioral consequences in the context of online innovation contests. Specifically, the oppositional consequences of amoral manipulation and striving for status on the one hand and showing distrust of others on the other hand concerning contribution quantity and contribution quality are found. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of negative personality traits such as Machiavellianism as powerful predictors of behavior and of success within competitive innovation environments and leads to important managerial implications regarding the design and management of innovation contests. Abstract: This study investigates the moderating role of mind wandering in influencing the relationships between on-task thought and two functional outcomes of interacting with technology (i.e., creativity and knowledge retention). The study extends the content regulation hypothesis of mind wandering by differentiating mind wandering into two categories—technology-related and nontechnology-related. The scales to measure mind wandering and on-task thought were first developed and validated. After that, the structural model was tested. The findings suggest that mind wandering (technologyrelated) positively moderates the relationship between on-task thought (technologyrelated) and creativity and mind wandering (nontechnology-related) positively moderates the relationship between on-task thought (nontechnology-related) and knowledge retention. The results also show that creativity is positively associated with knowledge retention. By acknowledging the potential benefits associated with mind wandering, this study is able to show that mind wandering is not always destructive; it can offer some unique benefits for technology users. Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explore how speakers enter each other’s reference frames during interactive decision-making and negotiation. It examines the relation between reciprocal adaptation, Interactive Alignment Theory and Theory of Theory-of-Mind by using ethno-methodological analysis of audio-recorded activities. The study concludes that problem reframing is affected by interactivity and led by discursive mechanisms such as reciprocal adaptation, which realize as two types of embodied, cognitive and emotional processing: interactive alignment and complex reasoning. The type of activity predicts the functions of cognitive processing. In strategic negotiations, such as plea bargains, interactive alignment realizes complex emotionally loaded Theory-of-Mind reasoning. In addition, the analysis indicates that the participation of a judge does not inhibit the anchoring effect but rather reinforces it interactively. The study suggests a tentative framework for analysis of framing by describing cognitive processing in terms of temporal, consciousness and communicative characteristics. Multi-functionality of discourse features demands careful study of context rather than assumption of linguistic-discursive functions. Collapse

Abstract: This article discusses the role of commonly used neurophysiological tools such as psychophysiological tools (e.g., EKG, eye tracking) and neuroimaging tools (e.g., fMRI, EEG) in Information Systems research. There is heated interest now in the social sciences in capturing presumably objective data directly from the human body, and this interest in neurophysiological tools has also been gaining momentum in IS research (termed NeuroIS). This article first reviews commonly used neurophysiological tools with regard to their major strengths and weaknesses. It then discusses several promising application areas and research questions where IS researchers can benefit from the use of neurophysiological data. The proposed research topics are presented within three thematic areas: (1) development and use of systems, (2) IS strategy and business outcomes, and (3) group work and decision support. The article concludes with recommendations on how to use neurophysiological tools in IS research along with a set of practical suggestions for developing a research agenda for NeuroIS and establishing NeuroIS as a viable subfield in the IS literature. Abstract: Group purchasing sites have recently gained tremendous popularity on the Internet. Besides the collective buying model, the leading website, Groupon.com, also introduces a tipping point mechanism to the U.S. e-market. The current study creates a theoretical model that integrates the theory of mind with models from e-commerce research to further study the buyer’s decision making influenced by a shopping group. We find that the buyer’s satisfaction with price discounts, their expectation of quality, and group inference have significant positive effects on the buyer’s purchase intention. The findings provide several constructive implications to practitioners as well. Collapse
