Abstract: Employees' nonwork use of information technology (IT), or cyberslacking, is of growing concern due to its erosion of job performance and other negative organizational consequences. Research on cyberslacking antecedents has drawn on diverse theoretical perspectives, resulting in the lack of a cohesive explanation of cyberslacking. Further, prior studies have generally overlooked IT-specific variables. To address cyberslacking problems in organizations, as well as research gaps in the literature, we used a combination of a literature-based approach and a qualitative inquiry to develop a model of cyberslacking that includes a 2×2 typology of antecedents. The proposed model was tested and supported in a three-wave field study of 395 employees in a U.S. Fortune-100 organization. This study organizes antecedents from diverse research streams and validates their relative impact on cyberslacking, thus providing a cohesive theoretical explanation of cyberslacking. This study also incorporates contextualization (i.e., IT-specific factors) into theory development and enriches the IS literature by examining the nonwork aspects of IT use and their negative consequences to organizations. In addition, the results provide practitioners with insights into the nonwork use of IT in organizations, particularly regarding how they can take organizational action to mitigate cyberslacking and maintain employee productivity. Abstract: The popularity of mobile payment services lies in the convenient transactions they offer to users. In the age of growing cybercrime, however, mobile payment transactions carry risks of financial and data losses. It thus becomes critical to understand how risk and convenience have contrasting impacts on users’ intention to use mobile payments. To investigate this, we consider various dimensions of perceived risk and perceived convenience to understand the net effect of their negative and positive influences on the intention to use. We also examine the actual use behavior predicted by intention along with the influence of habit. The research model, tested using survey responses from a sample of 215 users along with the descriptive answers from the survey respondents, helps us draw crucial insights. The study contributes to the field in a significant manner by providing insights into the balancing effect of risk and convenience on mobile payment service usage, as well as the development of the multi-dimensional scales for the key variables of risk and convenience. Abstract: A rich stream of research has identified numerous antecedents to employee compliance (and noncompliance) with information security policies. However, the number of competing theoretical perspectives and inconsistencies in the reported findings have hampered efforts to attain a clear understanding of what truly drives this behavior. To address this theoretical stalemate and build toward a consensus on the key antecedents of employees’ security policy compliance in different contexts, we conducted a meta-analysis of the relevant literature. Drawing on 95 empirical papers, we classified 401 independent variables into 17 distinct categories and analyzed each category’s relationship with security policy compliance, including an analysis for possible domain-specific moderators. A meta-analytic relative weight analysis determined the relative importance of each category in predicting security policy compliance, while adding robustness to our findings. At a broad level, our results suggest that much of the security policy compliance literature is plagued by suboptimal theoretical framing. Our findings can facilitate more refined theory-building efforts in this research domain and serve as a guide for practitioners to manage security policy compliance initiatives. Collapse

Abstract: Information systems security (ISS) behavioral research has produced different models to explain security policy compliance. This paper (1) reviews 11 theories that have served the majority of previous information security behavior models, (2) empirically compares these theories (Study 1), (3) proposes a unified model, called the unified model of information security policy compliance (UMISPC), which integrates elements across these extant theories, and (4) empirically tests the UMISPC in a new study (Study 2), which provided preliminary empirical support for the model. The 11 theories reviewed are (1) the theory of reasoned action, (2) neutralization techniques, (3) the health belief model, (4) the theory of planned behavior, (5) the theory of interpersonal behavior, (6) the protection motivation theory, (7) the extended protection motivation theory, (8) deterrence theory and rational choice theory, (9) the theory of self-regulation, (10) the extended parallel processing model,and (11) the control balance theory. The UMISPC is an initial step toward empirically examining the extent to which the existing models have similar and different constructs. Future research is needed to examine to what extent the UMISPC can explain different types of ISS behaviors (or intentions thereof). Such studies will determine the extent to which the UMISPC needs to be revised to account for different types of ISS policy violations and the extent to which the UMISPC is generalizable beyond the three types of ISS violations we examined. Finally, the UMISPC is intended to inspire future ISS research to further theorize and empirically demonstrate the important differences between rival theories in the ISS context that are not captured by current measures. Abstract: Non-work-related personal use of the Internet within organizations has received increased attention from scholars. We increase previous understanding of this phenomenon by proposing a novel model based on the theory of interpersonal behavior (TIB). The TIB includes previous researched constructs (i.e., attitudes, social influence, and intentions) as well as emotional factors, habits, and different sources of social influence. Our results (N=238) suggest that the model well predicts the use of the Internet at work for non-work purposes. Our results shed new light on the influence of habit, affect, role, and self-concept in the use of the Internet. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations invest considerable resources in the development and implementation of IT project management (IT PM) methodologies to increase productivity and quality as well as to save time, effort, and resources. However, such methodologies are often rejected outright by users. Our research analyzes the determinants of individual usage behavior in order to enable organizations to engineer IT PM methodologies that not only provide strategic benefits but also meet the needs of actual users. The existing literature, especially Triandis’ Theory of Interpersonal Behavior as well as initial case study results from a number of organizations are used to construct a conceptual model. This research model includes four dimensions: a) Value, b) workgroup influence, c) self-beliefs, and d) organizational characteristics, which are all considered to positively influence the development of the intention to use a methodology. Additionally, we find that the effect of intentions on actual usage can be weakened by an individual’s automatic behavior such as habits. Collapse

Abstract: Undoubtedly social influence in IS research is an issue that needs to be much more clearly examined. In order to assuage the wants for more research in this field we conducted a scientometric analysis of subjective norm in the IS top-journals of the JAIS ranking for the last two decades. In total 113 empirical and conceptual research models predominately in adoption research contained the factor subjective norm. The results revealed that subjective norm is just in seven of ten models a significant antecedent. To gain more knowledge about this problem we followed the ideas of social psychology and marketing researchers and correlated the strength of the impact of subjective norm with its measurement as well as the impact of intention with the impact on other endogenous variables. The results show a significant negative correlation between the significant antecedent subjective norm and its original measurement, the perceived opinion of important others. Furthermore it revealed a significant negative correlation between the significant impact of subjective norm on intention and the significant impact on other endogenous variables. Collapse

Abstract: Our study was initiated to provide a better understanding of the factors influencing employees’ non-work-related computing (NWRC) behavior by comparing two models, one based on Triandis’ theory of interpersonal behavior (TIB) and the other derived from the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Results of the study showed that the TIB-based model had higher explanatory power than the TPB-based model. Specifically, affect, social factors, and perceived consequences significantly influenced employees’ intention to engage in NWRC, while intention to engage in it, habit, and facilitating conditions determined employees’ NWRC behavior. Abstract: Numerous studies have assessed the relationship between information technology (IT) usage and individual performance. However, the empirical evidence on the subject is mixed and contradictory. This paper argues that the current state of empirical research is due to a failure to understand the interplay between IT usage and performance. It argues that the relationship between IT and performance materializes through an appropriation process resulting in two fits: a fit between IT and the task and one between IT and the user. Abstract: Organizations continue to invest heavily in personal computers for their knowledge workers. When use is optional, however, having access to the technology by no means ensures it will be used or used effectively. To help us gain a better understanding of factors that influence the use of personal computers, researchers have recently adapted the theory of reasoned action proposed by Fishbein and Azjen (1975). This study uses a competing theory of behavior proposed by Triandis (1980). Responses were collected from 212 knowledge workers in nine divisions of a multi-national firm, and the measures and research hypotheses were analyzed using partial least squares (PLS). The results show that social norms and three components of expected consequences (complexity of use, fit between the job and PC capabilities, and long-term con-sequences) have a strong influence on utilization. These findings confirm the importance of the expected consequences of using PC technology, suggesting that training programs and organizational policies could be instituted to enhance or modify these expectations.
