Abstract: Hedonic information consumption (HIC) refers to the consumption of information for non-task-oriented purposes such as entertainment or pleasure. With the explosive growth of information availability through online channels such as social media, HIC has become a common and growing phenomenon; however, most information systems research to date has focused on factors surrounding information consumption for utilitarian rather than hedonic purposes. In this paper, we take an initial step to inform theory in this area by applying a NeuroIS lens to explore HIC behavior. We postulate that information is more likely to be hedonically consumed when it is appraised as interesting, and that certain characteristics of the information involved in HIC, namely its novelty and valence, play a role in determining its interestingness. Moreover, we hypothesize that HIC is driven by the neurobiological reactions that take place in response to information novelty and valence. We report the results of a behavioral and an fMRI experiment designed to measure the relationship between these information dimensions and neu rocognitive responses in the context of a popular social media platform. Our results provide preliminary evidence for differential processing patterns related to novelty and valence that can inform ongoing theory building surrounding HIC behaviors. Collapse

Abstract: Recently, the topic of research data management has appeared at the forefront of Open Science as a prerequisite for preserving and disseminating research data efficiently. At the same time, scientific laboratories still rely upon digital files that are processed by experimenters to analyze and communicate laboratory results. In this study, we first apply a forensic process to investigate the information quality of digital evidence underlying published results. Furthermore, we use semiotics to describe the quality of information recovered from storage systems with laboratory forensics techniques. Next, we formulate laboratory analytics capabilities based on the results of the forensics analysis. Laboratory forensics and analytics form the basis of research data management. Finally, we propose a conceptual overview of open science readiness, which combines laboratory forensics techniques and laboratory analytics capabilities to help overcome research data management challenges in the near future. Abstract: Social media enables medical professionals and authorities to share, disseminate, monitor, and manage health-related information digitally through online communities such as Twitter and Facebook. Simultaneously, artificial intelligence (AI) powered social media offers digital capabilities for organizations to select, screen, detect and predict problems with possible solutions through digital health data. Both the patients and healthcare professionals have benefited from such improvements. However, arising ethical concerns related to the use of AI raised by stakeholders need scrutiny which could help organizations obtain trust, minimize privacy invasion, and eventually facilitate the responsible success of AI-enabled social media operations. This paper examines the impact of responsible AI on businesses using insights from analysis of 25 in-depth interviews of health care professionals. The exploratory analysis conducted revealed that abiding by the responsible AI principles can allow healthcare businesses to better take advantage of the improved effectiveness of their social media marketing initiatives with their users. The analysis is further used to offer research propositions and conclusions, and the contributions and limitations of the study have been discussed. Collapse

Abstract: IT adoption in the healthcare sector still lags behind expectations. The literature has extensively studied IT adoption in the healthcare sector as a problem of information infrastructure development. We extend that literature by adding a supply chain perspective which treats information infrastructures as assemblies of information components. This allows us to apply the theory of collective action to these individual components rather than to the information infrastructure as a whole, as is characteristic of the information infrastructure literature. We find that some information components have the character of common resource pool goods, which require specialized and local institutional arrangements to overcome the implied free-rider problem. This sheds a new light on the current problems of slow IT adoption in the healthcare sector. Collapse

Abstract: A theory of information compression (TIC) conceptualizes how anticipated judgment costs can affect decision quality. We theorize—inductively from decision making in medicine, energy pricing, auditing, and financial analytics—how judgment networks can exacerbate financial and nonfinancial judgment costs that compress information. Information compression occurs when a process intended to inform decision making generates information that has little variation. This can reduce decision quality and market efficiency. We offer potential remedies to mitigate its adverse societal consequences. We use complementary theoretical perspectives to nomologically contextualize how information compression arises. We introduce an information compression measure based on information entropy. TIC’s theoretical crux is that the expansion of a judgment network’s publicness exacerbates information compression by increasing judgment costs for some entities in a judgment network. We close with future research ideas on TIC’s core propositions and its broader theoretical implications for information systems research. Abstract: Information Exchange (IE) is an important area of research in Information Systems (IS), there is a lack of a framework that guides the design of an IE systems to support IE among multiple stakeholders with the purpose of improving the decision-making. To address this literature gap, this paper utilizes the Theory of Information Exchange (ToIE) as a kernel theory to develop an Information Exchange Decision Support (IEDS) framework. The framework depicts how to design an IE platform for multiple stakeholders to improve their decision quality. The qualitative evaluation shows that the IEDS framework is useful for identifying stakeholders, specifying information to be exchanged, and maintaining motivation factors necessary for IE. The IEDS framework offers prescriptive knowledge for building an effective IE in a multiple stakeholder environment and it can be applied in different business domains and provide guidance to the designers and developers of IE platforms. Abstract: Agglomeration benefits firms because it minimizes consumers’ search costs and information asymmetry. How ever, the effects of agglomeration may change due to the considerable amount of information available in online platforms. Thus, drawing upon the theoretical lens of information transparency and agglomeration theory, we investigate how online reviews change the effect of agglomeration on firm performance. A total of 11,528 ob servations of 467 hotels show that agglomeration density positively affects firm revenue in the hotel sector. However, such an effect decreases with the increase in online review quantity (including volume and length). This change is manifested in two forms, namely, minimizing information asymmetry and increasing competition cost due to information transparency. Moreover, the positive effect of agglomeration density decreases due to the quantity of high-quality (few spelling errors and easy to understand) online reviews, but not with low-quality. We further discover that the substitution effect of online review quantity on agglomeration density is stronger for independent hotels than for branded ones, whereas the effect is similar among hotels with various qualities. Our findings provide implications for the management of online channels in changing the local agglomeration effectiveness. Collapse

Abstract: We investigate how public firms configure their enterprise systems (ES) portfolio when faced with information risk, which refers to the likelihood that corporate financial information is of poor quality. We focus on firms’ configuration of their ES portfolio by introducing a novel construct: ES portfolio balance, or the relative proportion of two categories of ES modules, operational and functional. We draw on the theory of information processing to hypothesize the impact of information risk on ES portfolio balance and how this impact is affected by internal controls. We construct a multisource panel data set of 697 firms and 1,993 firm-year observations from 2005 to 2008 and use econometric and multivariate procedures to test our hypotheses. We find that when faced with an increase in information risk, firms change their ES portfolio balance more toward operational modules. However, when such firms are also faced with materially weak internal controls, they change their ES portfolio balance more toward functional modules instead. These findings expand our understanding of how firms’ information processing needs drive the configuration of their ES portfolio and, more broadly, IT resources portfolio. Collapse

Abstract: The online review systems of digital platforms feature a variety of designs. This study examines how closed-form evaluations and open-ended textual comment options affect customers’ online review writing behaviors and reflect satisfaction with hotels. We find that direct and spillover effects exist. These refer to the effects of cus tomers’ closed-form evaluations of a product or service attribute on their reviews of the same attribute and other attributes in their open-ended comments, respectively. Regarding the direct effect, positive closed-form evalu ations of attributes reduce customers’ behaviors of writing details about the same attributes in open-ended comments, but negative closed-form evaluations of attributes increase that behavior. The increasing effect is greater than the reducing effect. Regarding the spillover effect, closed-form evaluations of certain attributes increase customers’ behaviors of writing details about other attributes in open-ended comments. Additionally, we find that the heterogeneity effect lies in the different roles of closed-form evaluations and open-ended textual comments in reflecting customers’ overall satisfaction. Open-ended comments about the advantages of the at tributes have a more significant effect than the closed-form evaluations of the same attributes in reflecting overall customer satisfaction, but closed-form evaluations better reflect customers’ low overall satisfaction with the disadvantages of the attributes. The direct, spillover, and heterogeneity effects on customers’ evaluations and comments regarding independent hotels are higher than those effects on evaluations and comments regarding chain hotels. The findings provide insights for companies to design review systems, understand customer per ceptions, and use the positive electronic word-of-mouth effect. Collapse
