Abstract: Transparency-the observability of activities, behaviors, and performance-is often treated as a panacea for modern management. Yet there is a conundrum in the literature, with some studies suggesting that transparency may benefit group creativity and others suggesting that privacy may do so. A similar conundrum exists regarding the effects of different social capital types-structural holes vs. network cohesion-on group creativity. Enterprise social media (ESM) provide a unique opportunity to solve these conundrums by allowing groups to be "transparent" (non-group members can observe and/or participate in group activities) or "private" (group members and activities are hidden from the community) and enabling groups to develop distinct social capital structures. Using data from 28,083 written interactions produced by 109 transparent and 106 private groups in an ESM of a multinational design firm, we found strong support for our contingency hypotheses that both transparent and private groups may produce high levels of creative dialogues, yet in different forms. Specifically, expansion-focused creative dialoguesthose focused on combining or expanding existing concepts-emerge in transparent groups, but only when the group's social capital is characterized by structural holes. Conversely, we found that reframingfocused dialogues-those focused on challenging and rethinking-emerge in private groups but only when the group's social capital is characterized by network cohesion. Theoretically, these findings can help to solve the conundrums in the literature on group creativity and shed light on the role of ESM use in this context. Practically, our findings offer a critical reflection o contemporary initiatives for increasing transparency, whether through physical design or digital transformation.Burcu Bulgurcu is an assistant professor of information systems in the Department of Information Technology Management of the Ted Rogers School of Management. She was formerly a professor at the Carroll School of Management, Boston College. Her research focuses on the behavioral and managerial aspects of cybersecurity and information privacy, security and privacy by design, and the implications of privacy on creativity and innovation in digital enterprises. The results of her research have been published in the Financial Times Top 50 journals and leading conferences, including MIS Quarterly, the Journal of Management Information Systems, and ICIS and AMCIS proceedings. Dr. Bulgurcu's research has been supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and she has received numerous academic honors and awards. She is currently teaching award-winning courses on strategic IT management and data visualization.Yuyang Liang is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Information Technology at HEC Montréal. He received his PhD in media and information studies in the Department of Media and Information at Michigan State University. His areas of interest include knowledge sharing and collaboration via online communities and social media, enterprise social media, and computational modeling of social systems. Abstract: In our digital era, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face the challenge of relying on digital platforms to enhance their business model innovation. Prior research on this subject has mainly focused on the interaction between SMEs and their partners through their use of digital platforms. Meanwhile, how SMEs reconfigure their capabilities to promote business model innovation by adopting digital platforms has remained an under-researched area. To address this gap, we establish a conceptual framework to explain how digital platforms affect SMEs’ business model innovation through capability reconfiguration, and we then test this conceptual framework empirically by using a sample of 325 manufacturing SMEs in China. We find that digital platforms positively affect both business model innovation and the capability reconfiguration of SMEs. We also find that both evolutionary capability reconfiguration and substitutional capability reconfiguration mediate the relationship between digital platforms and SMEs’ business model innovation. These findings contribute theo retically to the research on digital platforms and SMEs while also providing important managerial implications for policymakers and SMEs to help firms implement digital strategies. Abstract: This paper studies how audience members categorize and evaluate ambiguous offerings. Depending on whether audience members categorize ambiguous offerings based on prototypes or goals, they activate two distinct cognitive mechanisms and evaluate differently ambiguous offerings. We expect that when audiences engage in goal- versus prototype-based categorization, their evaluation of ambiguous products increases. We theorize that, under goal-based categorization, the perceived utility of unclear attributes increases for audiences, which leads them to evaluate more positively ambiguous product offerings. We test and find support for these direct and mediated relationships through a series of laboratory, online, and field experiments. Overall, this study offers important implications for research on product and market categories, optimal distinctiveness, and market agents’ cognitive ascription of value. Collapse

Abstract: Open innovative crowdsourcing has received increasing attention. This study sets out to investigate idea convergence and generation in open innovative crowdsourcing communities from a cognitive load perspective to explore aspects of cognitive idea processing. We have conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate the effects of three manipulations (task complexity, idea presentation, and procedural guidance) on three types of cognitive load and the following idea convergence and generation quality. We have also examined the influencing mechanisms of cognitive loads on satisfaction with process and satisfaction with outcome. Our results show that the three cognitive loads have significant effects: Higher intrinsic cognitive load significantly leads to lower satisfaction with process and outcome. Higher extraneous cognitive load significantly leads to satisfaction with process. Higher germane cognitive load significantly leads to higher convergence quality and lower new idea generation quality. Collapse

Abstract: Metaphors are central in organization theory for they help the creation of knowledge by altering concepts or generating new ones. Yet, despite their importance, little is known about how metaphors are used in processes of knowledge creation across worldviews. In such contexts, participants maintain their specialization, work separately, and resort to interpretable devices like metaphors to create together. With a longitudinal study of a multidisciplinary scientific project aimed at repairing broken spinal cord tissues, we show how metaphors facilitate collective knowledge creation. We contribute to the theory of knowledge creation across worldviews by showing the consequences of the diverse creative outcomes of metaphors on the orientation and stability of the collective work. Moreover, we propose how to control and predict the creative outcomes of metaphors by modifying the knowledge bases that are engaged in the creative process. We contribute to the theory on cycles of knowledge creation by showing that a metaphor can extend knowledge both horizontally and vertically, and by specifying the relationships between the knowledge created and the elements that simultaneously populate the creative cycles. Abstract: The term ‘facilitated modelling’ is used in the literature to characterise an approach to structuring problems, developing options and evaluating decisions by groups working in a model-supported workshop environment, and assisted by a facilitator. The approach involves an interactive process by which models are jointly developed with group members interacting face-to-face, with or without computer support. The models produced are used to inform negotiations about the nature of the issues faced by the group, and how to address them. While the facilitated modelling literature is impressive, published empirical research rarely examines what actually happens in a facilitated modelling environment. The present study addresses this gap by reporting on exploratory empirical research undertaken to closely examine the conduct of facilitated modelling within its actual context of immediate use, namely, the workshop. Drawing on the knowledge-perspective of group communication, we conducted a micro-level analysis of a transcript of a facilitated modelling workshop held with the management team of an Alternative Food Network in the UK. Our analysis suggests that facilitated modelling interactions can take the form of three distinct group knowledge production patterns: generative, collaborative and assertive. Further, each pattern is characterised by a particular mix of communicative behaviours and model-supported interactions that has implications for the creation of new knowledge within the workshop. Our findings contribute to increasing our understanding of the nature of facilitated modelling within its context of use. Collapse

Abstract: Despite several insightful empirical studies on how new knowledge is created in organizations, there is still no satisfactory answer to the question, how is new knowledge created in organizations? The purpose of this paper is to address this question by focusing on direct social interaction, adopting a dialogical approach. The following argument is advanced. From a dialogical perspective, new knowledge in organizations originates in the individual ability to draw new distinctions concerning a task at hand. New distinctions may be developed because practitioners experience their situations in terms of already constituted distinctions, which lend themselves to further articulation. Further articulation develops when organizational members engage in dialogical exchanges. When productive, dialogue leads to self-distanciation, namely, to individuals taking distance from their customary and unreflective ways of acting as practitioners. Dialogue is productive depending on the extent to which participants engage relationally with one another. When this happens, participants are more likely to actively take responsibility for both the joint tasks in which they are involved and for the relationships they have with others. Self-distanciation leads to new distinctions through three processes of conceptual change (conceptual combination, conceptual expansion, and conceptual reframing), which, when intersubjectively accepted, constitute new knowledge. Several organizational examples, as well as findings from organizational knowledge research, are reinterpreted to illustrate the above points. Collapse
