Abstract: Work identity deals with self-definition in work activities and memberships which massively impact how employees react to digitalization. In the face of the changing world of work, there is increasing scholarly interest in work identity represented in numerous articles. Research produces several essential insights but appears fragmented in diverse conceptualizations and the investigation of multiple dimensions of work identity. Especially contributions in IS use a ‘professional identity’ conceptualization, which is fragmented and varies in definition clarity. We synthesize extant literature and offer a comprehensive work identity conceptualization to provide future research with orientation. The proposed conceptualization enables researchers to mutually investigate individuals based on their work-based self-identity, role identity, and social identities. Last, we present and discuss a research agenda that contributes to utilizing work identity as an analytical tool for digitalizing work. Collapse

Abstract: Growing interest in decentralized web has brought into focus the need to furnish decentralized digital identities that could uproot the dominant centralized solutions, such as single logins provided by social media platforms. However, these multiple efforts to put the end user in the center of identity management rarely relate to individuals' psychological needs related to identity enactment and construction, diminishing their chances for widespread adoption. This paper proposes a network formalization of identity theories that incorporates the specifics of identity processes online. From this model, two general, architectural principles for decentralized digital identities are drawn that might guide future work in this area. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we confront a paradox in the IS literature that even though our field focuses on the rapid pace of technological change and the dramatic scale of technology-enabled organizational and societal changes, we sometimes find ourselves studying these changes using—largely without question—constructs that were developed in a vastly different IT, user, and organizational environment. We provide guidelines to help assess whether an existing construct warrants updating and to structure the updating task if it is undertaken. Our three-step process provides for a theoretically grounded and comprehensive method that ensures we balance the need for construct updating against the need to sustain our cumulative tradition. We illustrate our guidelines using computer self-efficacy (CSE) as a case study. We document each of the steps involved in analyzing, reconceptualizing, and testing the revised construct information technology self-efficacy (ITSE). Our analyses show that the new construct better explains both traditional and contemporary constructs with a traditional (postal survey) and contemporary (online panel) sample. We discuss the implications of our work both for research on self-efficacy and more broadly for future updating of other important constructs. Collapse

Abstract: The investigation of the appealing indication that a modular product architecture is best associated to a loosely coupled organizational structure—that is, the mirroring hypothesis—has produced contradictory evidence, especially in the dynamic and ambiguous context of new product development. By integrating modularity theory and product-representation theories, we investigate how individual agency affects coordination in teams developing modular products. We conducted a field study of Flower-Net, a globally distributed team in a major IT company, engaged with the development of a modular software using agile practices. Our grounded model shows that, whereas top managers defined the product as modular and coordinated work accordingly, individuals developed different representations of the product’s architecture and conflicting individual coordination practices. We traced the individual development of product architecture representations back to the individual interpretations of organizational roles as more or less “segmented.” Conflicting individual practices, associated to different role-based product representations, were not addressed by the team—that developed a state of illusory concordance—and impaired the functioning of the team. This study contributes to the literature on modularity and the mirroring hypothesis by proposing individual role-based representations as an underexplored level of analysis for the matching between product and organizational modularity (Mirroring Hypothesis II). It also contributes to the debate on how representations affect team coordination, by detailing how role-based product representations can influence team members’ divergence and sustain illusory concordance. Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is being increasingly integrated into enterprises to foster collaboration within humanmachine teams and assist employees with work-related tasks. However, introducing AI may negatively impact employees’ identifications with their jobs as AI is expected to fundamentally change workplaces and professions, feeding into individuals’ fears of being replaced. To broaden the understanding of the AI identity threat, the findings of this study reveal three central predictors for AI identity threat in the workplace: changes to work, loss of status position, and AI identity predicting AI identity threat in the workplace. This study enriches information systems literature by extending our understanding of collaboration with AI in the workplace to drive future research in this field. Researchers and practitioners understand the implications of employees’ identity when collaborating with AI and comprehend which factors are relevant when introducing AI in the workplace. Collapse

Abstract: Recently Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled conversational agents or chatbots (ICA hereafter) have been widely introduced in online customer service, and are expected to transform the frontline workforce. However, most studies from employees' perspectives have been qualitative in nature. Moreover, extant empirical studies perceive ICA as a tool rather than considering ICA as an AI-enabled digital workforce. Besides, rare papers moved further to explore the rooted psychological drivers (such as identity) underlying the employees' actions. To address these gaps, our paper integrates the identity theory and cooperation perspectives to examine the impact of ICA's human-like capability on employees' job identity through the enhancement in work experience. Our study is expected to provide an innovative perspective viewing ICA as a human-like agent rather than a tool in behavior studies. This study also enriches the identity theory and cooperation-competition theory and promotes their applications in IS literature. Collapse

Abstract: The use of health and fitness apps has been on the rise to monitor personal fitness and health parameters. However, recent research discovered that many users discontinue using these apps after only a few months. Gamification has been suggested as a technique to increase users' interactions with the apps. Nevertheless, it is still not clear how gamification mechanisms encourage continued use and inspire user selfmanagement. Based on identity theories, this study suggests the fully mediating role of IT identity to describe how gamification elements can lead to continued intention to use health and fitness apps and increased users' tendency for information sharing through the apps. We collect data from 364 users of health and fitness apps through an online survey to examine the proposed model. The finding indicates that perceived gamification can increase users' IT identity. In turn, a higher IT identity would encourage users to continue using the apps and share more personal health information with others through the apps. The results of this study can have practical implications for app designers to use gamification elements to increase users' dependency, relatedness, and emotional energy associated with health apps. Moreover, the findings can have theoretical contributions for researchers to help them better articulate the process in which gamification can be translated into positive use behaviors. Collapse

Abstract: Obsessive online social gaming has become a worldwide societal challenge that deserves more scholarly investigation. However, this issue has not received much attention in the information systems (IS) research community. Guided by dual-system theory, we theoretically derive a typology of obsessive technology use and contextually adapt it to conceptualize obsessive online social gaming. We also build upon identity theory to develop a dual-identity perspective (i.e., IT identity and social identity) of obsessive online social gaming. We test our research model using a longitudinal survey of 627 online social game users. Our results demonstrate that the typology of obsessive technology use comprises four interrelated types: impulsive use, compulsive use, excessive use, and addictive use. IT identity positively affects the four obsessive online social gaming archetypes and fully mediates the effect of social identity on obsessive online social gaming. The results also show that IT identity is predicted by embeddedness, self-efficacy, and instant gratification, whereas social identity is determined by group similarity, group familiarity, and intragroup communication. Our study contributes to the IS literature by proposing a typology of obsessive technology use, incorporating identity theory to provide a contextualized explanation of obsessive online social gaming and offering implications for addressing the societal challenge.
