Abstract: During a crisis event, social media enables two-way communication and many-to-many information broadcasting, browsing others’ posts, publishing own content, and public commenting. These records can deliver valuable insights to approach problematic situations effectively. Our study explores how social media communication can be analyzed to understand the responses to health crises better. Results based on nearly 800 K tweets indicate that the coping and regulation foci framework holds good explanatory power, with four clusters salient in public reactions: 1) “Understanding” (problem-promotion); 2) “Action planning” (problem-prevention); 3) “Hope” (emotion-promotion) and 4) “Reassurance” (emotionprevention). Second, the inter-temporal analysis shows high volatility of topic proportions and a shift from self-centered to community-centered topics during the course of the event. The insights are beneficial for research on crisis management and practicians who are interested in large-scale monitoring of their audience for well-informed decision-making. Collapse

Abstract: Recent terrorist attacks and several terror alerts have increased the need to investigate the behavioral consequences of these threats. This research-in-progress paper focuses on the motivational factors determining usage behavior of social network sites (SNS) in the aftermath of terrorist attacks. Based on terror management theory (TMT) and uses and gratifications theory (U&G), this paper argues that people reminded of their mortality by terrorist attacks are motivated to seek information and communicate about the attacks on SNS to defend their cultural worldviews and maintain their self-esteem. The paper contributes to the understanding of factors driving people’s usage behavior of SNS in the aftermath of terrorist attacks. Collapse

Abstract: Evaluations of theoretical contributions in IS tend to be partial in that the decision as to whether or not a particular work constitutes a contribution rests almost entirely on well-established structures. While these structures allow for progression, they also allow for the muting of perspectives (that could be equally important theoretical contributions) that may only be realized by non-conformance. Furthermore, core ontological and epistemological assumptions should arguably be of core interest when assessing theoretical contribution, as going from the ground to core assumptions allows for even more critical analyses of underlying processes and conceptualizations; however, doing so normally requires more space than is typically allowed. This necessitates a temporary suspension of traditional structures in order to critically examine overall logic. This paper allows for this examination by presenting a reflective piece in the form of a hypothetical paper that focuses on decision making in IS. The hypothetical paper offers a tool for theorizing in IS by giving a specific example of how one would go from the ground to core assumptions on a particular topic. This paper then concludes by reflecting on the hypothetical paper and raises the question: at what point do our rules defeat the purpose? Collapse

Abstract: This paper argues that IS theories should not ignore or background the relationship between individuals and technologies in explaining concepts such as adoption, innovation, diffusion, and practice. The relationships that individuals have with technologies should, arguably, be a core interest of IS because of the centrality of people and IT to the discipline. The neglect of individual relationships with IS/IT is surprising given the growth of customisation and personalisation of systems, as well as the increasing prevalence of devices such a smartphones and tablets that blur the boundary between corporate and personal. Other disciplines recognise the importance of relationships in explaining core concepts, for example, the relationship between individuals and brands in marketing, individuals and others in sociology, and individuals and their thoughts in psychology. This paper draws on such work to consider the relationships between individuals and IS/IT, which we refer to as ‘technoidentology’, in examining the immediacy of individuals’ reactions to technology. Having done so, we conclude that theoretical work in the area of personal construct theory and terror management theory is likely to prove fruitful in helping IS researchers address key aspects of technoidentology.
