Abstract: Despite the growing body of literature on technostress, there is limited knowledge about the emergence of technostress among people working with physical robots. In this paper, we aim to address this research gap by exploring how technostress emerges among employees working with physical robots. The study was based on qualitative online questionnaire responses from 197 present or previous users of robots at work. Based on our data, we identified several robot-related environmental conditions that contributed to perceived work-related stress. Our findings reveal that the emergence of technostress among employees working with physical robots has distinct characteristics and that the technostressors identified in previous studies are insufficient for explaining stress in this context. Therefore, our study extends the technostress literature and provides insights into employees' experiences in organizations that use physical robots. Collapse

Abstract: The use of mobile health (mHealth) applications to easily track calorie intake and exercise behavior becomes more and more popular. However, research showed that mHealth apps could only be effective in supporting people in their weight loss if used regularly over a long period. Despite a significant amount of work examining the decision to continue to use mHealth apps, less is known about sources of negative user experiences that can act as barriers to long-term use. Drawing upon affordance theory, this study aims to fill this research gap by qualitatively analyzing app reviews from five popular weight loss apps. Our findings reveal nine causes of dissatisfaction that can have adverse effects regarding long-term mHealth app use for weight management. The results contribute to research and practice by shedding light on the barriers to the continued use of mHealth applications for weight management and how designers and developers can overcome these shortcomings. Abstract: This study employs a mixed-methods approach to examine how trial use of an IT can induce stress that leads individuals to reject the IT. In our qualitative study (Study 1), we identify eight technostress creators encountered during trial use of a specific IT. Then, in our quantitative study (Study 2), we show that these trial-period technostress creators reduce user satisfaction and increase intention to reject. Also, we demonstrate that motivation to learn and personal innovativeness in IT, two individual differences, moderate the influence of trial-period technostress creators on the intention to reject. Our mixed-methods study contributes to technostress research by identifying the specific technostress creators that influence the user during trial periods and by articulating the nature of this influence. By doing so, we illustrate how the interplay of the context- and domain-specific individual differences influence the relationship between technostress creators and the intention to reject. We extend adoption research by connecting technostress creators to rejection of IT in the trial period of IT use. Collapse

Abstract: Understanding information technology (IT) use is vital for the information systems (IS) discipline due to its substantial positive and negative consequences. In recent years, IT use for personal purposes has grown rapidly. Although personal use is voluntary and can often reflect fun, technostress is a common negative consequence of such use. When left unaddressed, technostress can cause serious harm to IT users. However, prior research has not explained how technostress forms over time or how its mitigation takes place in a personal—rather than organizational—environment. To address these research gaps, we conducted a qualitative study with narrative interviews of IT users who had experienced technostress. This study contributes to (1) the technostress literature by unpacking states in which technostress forms and can be mitigated and (2) the IT affordance literature by explaining the role of affordances and their actualizations in technostress as well as introducing the new concept of actualization cost. In terms of practice, our findings help individuals and societies identify the development of technostress, understand the activities required for its mitigation, and recognize mitigation barriers. Abstract: Individuals often blur the line between technologies used for personal means and those used to complete work-related tasks. The increasing level of capabilities offered by personal technologies presents opportunities to repurpose them for work. With guidance from representation theory, we describe how cross-context representational fidelity predicts repurposing intentions across domains of use (e.g., personal to work-related). An empirical study of 311 full-time employees demonstrates that congruence between prior technology use and potential work use increases an individual's belief that a technology can be useful for work purposes. Furthermore, we show that, in repurposing situations, usefulness is also influenced by an individual's confidence in using the technology on a work device(s). These findings, among others, shed new light on our understanding of the influence of experience on repurposing technologies for use in the professional domain. Collapse

Abstract: To improve mobile health application (mHealth) use, developers often send push notifications to users. Messages that utilize dynamic user data can adapt to users' changing behavior and have the potential to further improve mHealth use and behavior change by delivering the right support at the right time. However, existing behavior change theories are either static in nature or lack temporal specificity. We consider dynamic feedback loops proposed by Social Cognitive Theory to understand how goal and social feedback messages dynamically impact mHealth use during goal pursuit. Using a micro-randomized trial design (n=61) and a custom-developed mHealth application, our findings suggest that the impact of goal and social feedback messages on mHealth use varies based on if users are in the beginning, middle, or end stage of goal pursuit. Moreover, use of specific mHealth features subsequently impacts physical activity behavior. Theoretical reasons for these findings and future research opportunities are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Recent technostress literature points out the necessity to examine the positive side of technostress besides its well-known negative side. Therefore, the literature introduces challenge techno-stressors (CTS), appraised as opportunities, and hindrance techno-stressors (HTS), appraised as a hindrance towards personal accomplishment. However, recent investigations show how coping strategies regulate HTS but neglect how users cope with CTS and the conceptual differences between challenge and hindrance coping strategies. The paper develops a challenge and hindrance coping model theorizing that CTS leads to challenge coping (i.e., active coping) and then to positive outcomes (e.g., end-user performance). In contrast, HTS leads to hindrance coping (i.e., denial) and subsequently to negative outcomes (e.g., techno-exhaustion). The findings demonstrate that CTS increases active coping and reduces denial. HTS increases only denial. Regarding the outcomes, active coping increases end-user performance, whereas denial reduces end-user performance and increases techno-exhaustion. The contributions to theory and practice are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: It seems counterintuitive for people to continue using Social network sites (SNSs) despite the stress they cause. This study addresses this issue by suggesting that a stress paradox exists on SNSs, and by developing process and variance theoretical models to explain this new type of IT-duality. It argues that SNS use occurs as a coping strategy that people adopt to deal with life-stress. It also argues that SNSs are stressful, due to more than excessive demands, since SNS use also involves privacy threats. Abstract: On the 10th anniversary of the NeuroIS field, we reflect on accomplishments but, more importantly, on the future of the field. This commentary presents our thoughts on a future NeuroIS research agenda with the potential for high impact societal contributions. Four key areas for future information systems (IS) research are: (1) IS design, (2) IS use, (3) emotion research, and (4) neuro-adaptive systems. We reflect on the challenges of each area and provide specific research questions that serve as important directions for advancing the NeuroIS field. The research agenda supports fellow researchers in planning, conducting, publishing, and reviewing high impact studies that leverage the potential of neuroscience knowledge and tools to further information systems research. Abstract: Stress is a major problem in the human society, impairing the well-being, health, performance, and productivity of many people worldwide. Most notably, people increasingly experience stress during human-computer interactions because of the ubiquity of and permanent connection to information and communication technologies. This phenomenon is referred to as technostress. Enterprise systems, designed to improve the productivity of organizations, frequently contribute to this technostress and thereby counteract their objective. Based on theoretical foundations and input from exploratory interviews and focus group discussions, the paper presents a design blueprint for stress-sensitive adaptive enterprise systems (SSAESes). A major characteristic of SSAESes is that biosignals (e.g., heart rate or skin conductance) are integrated as real-time stress measures, with the goal that systems automatically adapt to the users' stress levels, thereby improving human-computer interactions. Various design interventions on the individual, technological, and organizational levels promise to directly affect stressors or moderate the impact of stressors on important negative effects (e.g., health or performance). However, designing and deploying SSAESes pose significant challenges with respect to technical feasibility, social and ethical acceptability, as well as adoption and use. Considering these challenges, the paper proposes a 4-stage step-by-step implementation approach. With this Research Note on technostress in organizations, the authors seek to stimulate the discussion about a timely and important phenomenon, particularly from a design science research perspective.
