Abstract: The metaverse is intended to reflect almost all activities of everyday and professional life in creating a new experience of social interaction by merging the virtual and real world in an interactive environment. It has the potential to disrupt the way we interact, socialize and work and thus organizations pursue possible application areas. However, there is a lack of research on the organizational readiness factors to ensure a successful initiation. To address this, we conducted 17 expert interviews from different industries. Drawing on the TOE framework, we identified 14 factors and respective propositions for the organizational context. Thereby well-known factors such as top management support were adapted to the requirements of the metaverse, but also new metaverse-specific factors emerged such as standards and interoperability. Abstract: Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) has recently gained a lot of attention, especially in the last few years. Scholars have conducted systematic literature reviews to gain more knowledge about responsible AI. However, no study has collected and evaluated the most significant barriers to responsible AI. We filled this gap in the literature by identifying eleven barriers and categorized them, using the Technology-Organization-Environment framework, into three categories. We collected data from seven experts and used the analytical hierarchy process to evaluate the importance of the barriers. The results indicated that technology, as a category, is the most important. The findings also recommended that data quality is the most vital among all eleven barriers. We offered eleven propositions as a theoretical contribution for future researchers in terms of conceptual development. We discussed the implications of the findings for research and practice. Abstract: Organizations leverage several approaches for creating software applications that meet the requirements of specific contexts. Besides well-researched approaches like software development, outsourcing, or customizing commercial software packages, low-code platforms today offer a new approach for creating software. The low-code approach allows to develop software without or with limited actual coding by combining executable software components into workflows. While the low-code approach simplifies software development and reduces effort and time, we lack explanations on why organizations adopt it, and which challenges are associated with its adoption. We, therefore, investigate the adoption of the low-code approach based on the technology-organization-environment framework. We identified ten aspects supporting and six aspects hindering the adoption of the low-code approach. For practice, we propose a model that can assist organizations in determining the adequacy for adopting the low-code approach. Collapse

Abstract: Manufacturing firms have increasingly relied on inter-organizational systems (IOS) to facilitate inter-firm transactions and integration with suppliers. However, they frequently face various impediments, such as adversarial behaviours and misalignments, when trying to integrate with IOS (i.e., IOS integration or IT/IS integration). Based on the perspectives of mutual adaptation of technology and organization and socio-technical systems, this study develops two compromise constructs critical for IOS integration: inter-firm process compromise and technology compromise. These two compromise constructs, treated as neutral alignment, are proposed to affect the achievement of higher IOS integration. Based on 146 matched-pair samples, the findings demonstrate the importance of technology and inter-firm process compromises in achieving greater IOS integration, which, in turn, enables higher inter-firm dependence and operational performance. This research provides theoretical and practical implications that contribute to our understanding of the role of compromise in facilitating IOS integration. The implications should serve as an important basis for future research in examining IOS integration. Collapse

Abstract: Technology-driven challenges, both existing and emerging, require banks to invest in IT capabilities, especially in artificial intelligence (AI). Digital options theory presents a valuable guide rail for these investments. However, the nature of AI as a moving frontier of computing requires certain extensions to established digital option thinking. Based on interviews with 23 experts in the retail banking industry, we highlight the importance of thinking broadly when laying the foundation for AI options and being mindful of the dynamic effects of contextual factors. Drawing from digital options theory and the Technology-Organization-Environment framework as dual lens, our study adds a structured approach to consciously balance resources and AI-related capability investments with a broader consideration of the banking industry's complex environment. In this way, our study complements recent research on the interplay between incumbents' resources and digital opportunities. Collapse

Abstract: COVID-19 caused significant challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the event industry. To address these challenges, many SMEs leveraged information and communication technologies (ICTs), with some even emerging strengthened from the crisis. Drawing on the technology-organization-environment framework and technology-affordances-and-constraints theory, we investigate the adoption of ICTs as a crisis response strategy in 10 SMEs in the German business event (e.g., corporate events, conferences) industry. Our findings reveal that ICT adoption not only depends on rational decisions based on organizational, environmental, and technological characteristics, but also on these dimensions’ interrelationship and the specific ICTs’ affordances and constraints. Introducing readily available ICTs (e.g., video-conferencing) has significant potential in addressing physical distancing in the short and medium term, while more sophisticated ICTs (e.g., virtual reality) are more likely to gain importance in the long term. Thus, we expand our understanding of organizational technology adoption and ICT-enabled crisis response strategies in SMEs. Collapse

Abstract: Through the lens of the technology-organization-environment framework, this study aims to identify the relevant influencing factors and future opportunities for blockchain technology (BCT) adoption in the automotive industry. By applying an exploratory qualitative empirical study with semi-structured interviews with blockchain experts from the German automotive industry, a revised TOE framework is proposed in this context, confirming previous findings while also incorporating the newly discovered contextual factors of education & skills and sustainability. The analysis of a subsequent quantitative study reveals that while all factors affect BCT adoption, not all context factors have an equally strong impact. The most emphasized emerging BCT opportunities are autonomous driving, decentralized network, digital identity management, and traceability of the supply chain. The findings of this study provide guidance to organizations, politicians, consultants, and managers for defining strategies that aid in the successful adoption and value creation of BCT applications. Abstract: The study examines the mediating role of human resource (HR) quality on ICT adoption effects on corporate governance. Extant information systems research has not examined the dual effect of ICT adoption and HR quality on corporate governance at the global level. Furthermore, the mediating role of HR quality on corporate governance has not been widely explored. To address this, we rely on secondary data from 140 countries and Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling and the Technology-Organization-Environment framework as the theory to examine these effects. The findings show that whilst the direct effects of ICT adoption on HR quality is positive, it is not so on corporate governance. Furthermore, the direct effects of HR quality on corporate governance and the mediating role of HR quality on ICT adoption effects on corporate governance were found to be positive. Our study provides more insight and proffers some implications for research, practice, and policy. Collapse

Abstract: Failure to prevent and detect fraud has severe consequences for organizations. Organizations confront not only monetary losses but also reputation and customer trust. Fraud detection is a complex task and incorporates many mechanisms. While the risk of fraud cannot be completely eliminated, it may be reduced by using multiple mechanisms such as technological platforms, internal controls, and regulatory requirements. Combating fraud can be done in a two-consecutive process, namely fraud prevention and detection. In this study, by utilizing the Technology-Organization-Environment Framework (TOE), we have identified the factors affecting fraud detection system adoption. Such understanding may bring new insights to the discussion and provide contributions to both practitioners and researchers alike. Collapse
