Information systems for sustainable remote workplaces

Abstract: This review discusses the challenges associated with the sustainability of remote workplaces, which have become more prevalent due to the growing trend of work digitalization and the pandemic-induced push to remote work. These challenges are highlighted in literature across various disciplines, including information systems, but these discourses have remained isolated from each other. In this review, we consolidated and synthesized research on remote work from the perspective of individual workers by reviewing 187 articles published between 1999 and 2020 in recognized academic journals from fields including information systems, organizational studies, economics, human resources, sociology, and psychology. We identified five key themes that concern opportunities and challenges to sustainable remote workplaces: (1) key character­ istics, (2) work-life boundaries; (3) health and well-being; (4) social interaction, and (5) lead­ ership. Building on our findings we created a framework that recognizes two interrelated categories of factors influencing remote workplace sustainability – rigid base characteristics and contextual remote workplace variables – that together shape the trajectory of remote workplace sustainability in the long term. The framework also identifies the potential role of information systems in modulating the impact of the base characteristics to build continuities that encourage more sustainable remote workplaces. The paper concludes by offering a research agenda for in­ formation systems for sustainable remote workplaces based on the three IS theoretical frames: inclusion, dignity, and boundary objects. Abstract: Digital native and digital immigrant user types characterise the differences between those who grew up in a world of ubiquitous information systems and those who pre-date it. The rise in computer-mediated communication (CMC) technologies such as emails, text messages, and social media creates more opportunities for interruptions. Researchers have explored the impact of growing up in a world of technology. However, little research has explored the potential differences between digital natives and digital immigrants handling technology interruptions. This paper uses a qualitative approach to examine the extent to which individuals handle CMC interruptions differently based on the role of technology and its level of pervasiveness in the environment in which they grew up. Thirty-three interviews were conducted with individuals from different population groups based on age and gender to understand how technology interruptions are handled in work and social life. The findings support existing pre- and post-technology interruption frameworks and explain how and why generational differences exist in the process of CMC interruption handling. Abstract: Conversational agents (CAs) are digital artifacts which communicate with humans through natural language for performing a variety of tasks. When humans interact with CAs, affective responses e.g., emotions, are seen to influence both CA adoption and performance. Despite the vital role of affect in human-CA interaction, understanding of its antecedents, affective outcomes, and their relationships from prior research is nascent and segregated. Motivated thus, we review empirical studies on affect in human-CA interactions, classify them in terms of affective outcomes, and identify corresponding antecedents. We further analyze the relationships between antecedents and outcomes and highlight significant relationships as well as inconsistent findings. Drawing on the review, we propose future research directions for this area. We contribute by developing a deeper understanding of research on affect between human and CAs, identifying gaps in prior knowledge, and outlining future research directions. Additionally, we lay out our plans for extending this work. Collapse

Abstract: Smartwatches are wearable devices intended to be smartphone companions that capture health data and ease access to notifications. They have also become personalisable standing as a fashion statement. This combination resulted in staggering adoption rates recently leading to question whether smartwatch users’ choice and use satisfaction emerge from utility features or from its fashion characteristics. This paper proposes and validates a fit theory to investigate the antecedents of adopters’ satisfaction. Besides evaluating fit with identity, the model assesses both perceived and actual task-technology fit of smartwatches. A questionnaire-based quantitative approach is used to collect data from about 300 smartwatch users in Qatar. To test the proposed model, data is analysed using structural equation modeling (SEM) and artificial neural networks (ANN). Furthermore, ANN sensitivity analysis ranks the importance of the fit factors affecting users’ choice during pre- and post-adoption stages. Both task-technology and technology-identity fit factors are quasi-equally important in explaining 62% of satisfaction variance. ANN analysis revealed that post-adoption satisfaction is primarily attributed to smartwatches’ ability to fit with users’ identity and secondarily to its perceived fit with tasks. Nevertheless, pre-adoption choice of smartwatches is mainly guided by their functionality. This paper is the first to propose and validate an integrated task-technology-identity fit model to explain smartwatch utilization and users’ satisfaction. The originality also lies in assessing actual task-technology fit and as perceived by users. Employing two modes of analysis revealed extra insights too. Collapse

Abstract: Agile transformations cause fundamental changes to work designs. To better understand resistance to transformations, we shed light on employee preferences and the consequences of team and work organization changes for job satisfaction. Using the stated preference method "pairwise comparisonbased preference measurement", we examine our hypothesis on job satisfaction in agile vs. traditional team and work organization. Furthermore, we relate job satisfaction to the gap between perceived and preferred forms of such organizations. In summary, we identified team organization as the most important dimension in agile transformations. For requirements engineering, the distance between employee preferences and the perceived status quo was particularly large. Further, we found evidence that a larger distance between team and work organization preferences and perceptions negatively influenced job satisfaction. Collapse

Abstract: Energy costs represent a significant share of the total cost of ownership in high-performance computing (HPC) systems. Using a unique data set collected by massive sensor networks in a petascale national supercomputing center, we first present an explanatory model to identify key factors that affect energy consumption in supercomputing. Our analytic results show that, not only does computing node utilization significantly affect energy consumption, workload distribution among the nodes also has significant effects and could effectively be leveraged to improve energy efficiency. Next, we establish the high model performance using in-sample and out-of-sample analyses. We then develop prescriptive models for energy-optimal runtime workload management and extend the models to consider energy consumption and job performance tradeoffs. Specifically, we present four dynamic resource management methodologies (packing, load balancing, threshold-based switching, and energy optimization), model their application at two levels (purely within-rack and jointly cross-rack resource allocation), and explore runtime resource redistribution policies for jobs under the emergent principle of computational steering and comparatively evaluate strategies that use computational steering with those that do not. Our experimental studies show that packing is preferred when the total workload of a rack is higher than a threshold and load balancing is preferred when it is lower. These results lead to a threshold strategy that yields near-optimal energy efficiency under all workload conditions. We further calibrate the energy-optimal resource allocations over the full range of workloads and present a bicriteria evaluation to consider energy consumption and job performance tradeoffs. We demonstrate significant energy savings of our proposed strategies under various workload conditions. We conclude with implementation guidelines and policy insights into energy-efficient computing resource management in large supercomputing data centers. Abstract: While online labor markets (OLMs) provide many benefits including flexibility and data driven AI matching systems, gender and other social biases have been shown in OLMs, and research demonstrates AI can also perpetuate bias. However, previous OLM research assumes bias is static over time and independent of the AI algorithm. To help design OLMs that minimize the detrimental impact of biases on marginalized social groups, we investigate the interaction among individual characteristics and AI sources of biases over the long-term and evaluate auditing strategies using an agent-based simulation model. We also empirically investigate hiring bias using a cross section of data from a popular online labor market, and we use this data to inform our simulation. We then plan to develop and empirically test a framework to evaluate AI fairness and the interaction of different biases on OLMs and test an audit strategy to mitigate biases. We plan to extend the literature on OLMs by integrating fairness and intersectionality research to evaluate the impact of biases. Collapse

Abstract: The present study is an attempt to measure the technology readiness (TR) and learning goal orientation (LGO) of Indian students pursuing Master of Business Administration (MBA) towards e-learning through an online survey of 201 students. This research proposes an integrated model that combines the TR dimensions (innovativeness, optimism, insecurity, and discomfort), LGO and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The model was tested using the PLS-SEM technique. The results indicated that the model is robust with satisfactory explanatory power. The findings revealed that the positive (innovativeness and optimism) and negative (insecurity and discomfort) personality traits of TR had the expected direction of relationships. Further, LGO had a significant impact on PEOU, PU, INT, and TASK-PERF. In line with the TAM model, the influence of PEOU and PU on INT, and PEOU on PU was positive and significant. The academic and practical implications of these results have been discussed in the paper. Collapse

Abstract: We analyze the relationship between unemployment and the supply of online labor for microtasking. Using detailed U.S. data from a large microtasking platform between 2011 and 2015, we study the participation and the number of hours supplied by workers in the U.S. We found that more individuals registered on the platform and completed microtasks as the unemployment level in the commuting zone increased. This effect was strongest in regions with a high share of low-skilled workers. Our analyses of the intensive margin, wage elasticity, and temporal work patterns suggest that the increased participation was likely motivated by an effort to substitute income. Our findings suggest that microtasking platforms are an interesting online labor market for less educated workers. However, we also observed very low retention rates, indicative of a solely transient participation effect. Collapse
