Abstract: Users of rival technology platforms, such as Android-versus-iOS, often harbor hostile opposition to each other. The dominant perspective of technology resistance, conceptualized as technology inertia, cannot explain such strong oppositional behavior. We propose a threat to tech self-esteem construct that captures distinct threat perceptions and offers a unified explanation for oppositional intentions. We conducted an empirical study of smartphone users, where we find that the threat to technology self-esteem arises from distinct antecedents and offers a singular explanation for opposition. Moreover, we show the unintended consequences of employing lockin strategies and provide advice on why and how to mitigate them. Collapse

Abstract: As frequent service failures raise user concerns, guarantee compensation has become a competitive instrument for cloud service providers (CSPs) in addition to price. This study proposes a game-theoretical model where two CSPs compete on both price and compensation. We consider two roles of compensation: (1) remedying user losses and (2) helping users to form quality perception. The results indicate that the higher-quality CSP should always guarantee higher compensation but may not always charge a higher price. We further investigate the signaling policies and find that the lower-quality CSP is more likely to signal a higher-than-actual quality. Collapse

Abstract: The adoption of Information Systems (IS) is among the critical topics for IS research and practice. However, despite rich insights across IS literature streams, many IS implementation projects still struggle with user adoption and realising benefits. This paper argues that a knowledge gap exists because research has paid little attention to the definition, manifestations, and effects of adoption management in mandatory environments. The article proposes definitions and systematically reviews findings related to adoption management at the cross-section of the adoption and benefits management literature. The findings show that adoption management manifests across the two literature streams as constructs, models, and methods. While some articles examine these manifestations in the analysis, many discuss adoption management as an afterthought in the implications for practice in discussion sections, and few articles explicitly label it adoption management. We discuss these and other gaps and provide avenues for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Recent high-profile antitrust cases and policy proposals have put a spotlight on the relationship between firms’ access to big data and sustained competitive advantages in digital markets. In Europe, concerns about data-driven market power have led policymakers to propose far-reaching regulations of information technology (IT) in these markets. Despite the global policy relevance, the regulation of big data and its competitive effects has so far received little attention in information systems (IS) research. This article addresses this research gap by developing an overarching framework for future IS research on the role of IT for the regulation of data-driven market power. The proposed research framework builds upon a three-part analysis: First, we review the academic literature and show that there is extensive, although nuanced, empirical evidence for business value creation from big (user) data. Second, we draw on the resource-based view of the firm and recent policy reports to derive six facilitating factors that enable firms to establish market power based on sustained data-driven competitive advantages. Third, we characterize three regulatory approaches to govern market power and competition in data-driven digital markets: (i) empowering consumers, (ii) data openness, and (iii) limiting data scale. For each of these approaches, we highlight the key role of IT artifacts in mediating the effect of regulatory rules on actual practice. Collapse

Abstract: Employee personal use of technology at work (PUTW) – defined as employees’ activities using organisational or personal IT resources for non-work-related purposes while at work – is increasingly common. Our review of existing PUTW studies (n = 137) suggests that previous studies widely discussed PUTW outcomes, antecedents, and policies. The literature review also indicates that previous studies proposed opposing viewpoints regarding the effect of PUTW on employee job performance, but few studies offered empirical evidence. Consequently, the conditions under which PUTW can increase or decrease employee job performance have not been discussed. We develop a theoretical model for increasing the understanding of this issue. Our model suggests that executive attention is an important underlying mechanism through which PUTW affects employee job performance. We further suggest the effect of PUTW on executive attention (and job performance) depends on PUTW behavioural characteristics in terms of four dimensions: PUTW cognitive load, PUTW arousal level, PUTW timing, and PUTW frequency/duration. The model can advance researchers’ understanding of the possible conditions under which PUTW may increase or decrease employee job performance. The model also offers new insights into existing studies on PUTW antecedents and policies. As a result, our proposed model provides new theoretical guidance for future studies on PUTW. Collapse

Abstract: Although cloud computing is associated with organizational agility, anecdotal evidence points to resistance to cloud computing by employees in information technology (IT) units. We explored the links between software as a service (SaaS) and organizational agility by conducting two stages of interviews with key informants in large organizations, and by employing affordance and inertia-theoretical lenses. Two basic affordances emerged from the retroductive data analysis –implementing quickly and sourcing independently – which in turn yielded two higher-level affordances: trialing alternatives and self-organizing business teams. We developed a model that explains how and why these four affordances enhance agility by accelerating the sensing-toacting process of organizations. We also describe how five categories of organizational inertia in IT units hinder agility. Our main contribution is how adopting SaaS applications enables orga­ nizational agility while highlighting the role of IT unit inertia in SaaS affordance actualization processes. Collapse

Abstract: Fluidity is the ability of a digital platform ecosystem to change form to align with changing consumer preferences and stay relevant in the marketplace. This study advances that three dimensions and their five sub-dimensions determine the fluidity of a digital platform ecosystem. They are the (1) functional dimension with its two sub­ dimensions of platform openness and platform quality (i.e., user-friendliness and quality of service offerings); (2) the mechanical dimension which consists mainly of platform design; and (3) the humanistic dimension with the sub-dimensions of network effects and network interactivity. This study advances that firms can manage these dimensions to improve the fluidity of their platforms. Furthermore, we propose that improved fluidity enhances the customer experience and increases switching costs. Collapse

Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs), e.g., ChatGPT, is expected to reshape a broad spectrum of domains. This study examines the impact of ChatGPT on question aksing in Q&A communitits via the natural experiment. Safe-guided by supporting evidence of parallel trends, a difference-in-difference (DID) analysis suggests the launching trigger an average 2.6% reduction of question-asking on Stack Overflow, confirming a lower-search-cost-enabled substitution. Our further analysis suggests that, this substitution effect has resulted in more longer, less readable and less cognitive and hence more sophisticated questions on average. Finally, the insignificant change in the score given by viewers per question suggests no improvement in the question quality and decreased platform-wide engagement. Our moderation analysis further ascertain the types of individuals who are more susceptible to ChatGPT. Taken together, our paper suggests LLMs may threaten the survival of user-generated knowledge-sharing communities, which may further threaten the sustainable learning and long-run improvement of LLMs. Collapse

Abstract: Faced with uncertainty when choosing among a wide range of similar competing technologies, users often take a herding in technology adoption (HTA) strategy to make heuristic adoption decisions. The HTA strategy brings users cost and time savings and casts doubt on user staying power. The extant adoption research has long focused on user satisfaction with the performance of the chosen technology (also known as the expectation-disconfirmation theory perspective) but does not sufficiently account for the consideration of the decision process across competing alternatives. To fill this void, this research uses a holistic post-adoptive evaluation by introducing a regret perspective in relation to competing technologies. Specifically, we theorize and operationalize a new multidimensional construct of post-adoption regret and construct a research model to examine how HTA leads to post-adoption regret and how such regret influences user staying power. The results suggest that post-adoption regret is formed primarily through two routes, outcome and process, and it is found to be more related to user switching, whereas satisfaction is related to user retention. The research model is supported by two longitudinal field studies of users in Asia and Europe who chose between competing technologies in both forms of free software and paid hardware. Abstract: Cloud services providers practice security-induced lock-in when employing cryptography and tamper-resistance to limit the portability and interoperability of users’ data and applications. Moreover, security-induced lock-in and users’ anti-lock-in strategies intersect within the context of platform competition. When users deploy anti-lock in strategies, such as using a hybrid cloud, a leader–follower pricing framework increases profits for cloud services providers relative to Nash equilibrium prices. This creates a second-mover advantage, as the follower’s increase in profits exceeds that of the leader owing to the potential for price undercutting. By contrast, introducing or enhancing security-induced lock-in creates both an increase in profits and a first-mover advantage. Cloud services providers therefore favor security-induced lock-in over price leadership. More broadly, we show why standardization of semantics, technologies, and interfaces is a nonstarter for cloud services providers. Collapse
