Abstract: Digital agents are considered a general-purpose technology. They spread quickly in private and organizational contexts, including education. Yet, research lacks a conceptual framing to describe interaction with such agents in a holistic manner. While focusing on the interaction with a pedagogical agent, that is, a digital agent capable of natural-language interaction with a learner, we propose a model of learning activity based on activity theory. We use this model and a review of prior research on digital agents in education to analyze how various characteristics of the activity, including features of a pedagogical agent or learner, influence learning outcomes. The analysis leads to identification of information systems research directions and guidance for developers of pedagogical agents and digital agents in general. We conclude by extending the activity theory-based model beyond the context of education and show how it helps designers and researchers ask the right questions when creating a digital agent. Abstract: Process mining (PM) has gained traction as a Big Data Analytics technique to discover, monitor, and improve business processes based on event data that are available in organizations' information systems. However, despite high expectations and widespread use in practice, organizations still struggle to implement and realize value from PM. In particular, organizations, first, are challenged to identify and establish the antecedents necessary for implementing PM use cases, and second, lack guidance in identifying and assessing valuable PM use cases. Even though initial studies investigated sociotechnical factors influencing the adoption, implementation, and value of PM on the organizational level, knowledge in the field is still fragmented, and we lack a systematic understanding of how organizations can assess antecedents for and value potentials of PM to identify valuable use cases. Thus, building on a design science research approach, we address this research gap by developing and evaluating a structured framework drawing on the taxonomy development method of Nickerson et al. (2013) for assessing PM use cases based on their antecedents and expected value potentials. We iteratively develop and evaluate the taxonomy grounded in theory by drawing on PM literature and related research fields and practice by conducting twelve semi-structured interviews at a German manufacturing corporation to apply and evaluate the taxonomy. Consequently, our study contributes to research on the organizational implementation and use of PM and enables researchers and practitioners to understand, operationalize, and assess the factors influencing the selection of PM use cases. Abstract: Participatory modeling (PM) is a craft that is often learned by training ‘on the job’ and mastered through years of practice. There is little explicit knowledge available on identifying and documenting the skills needed to perform PM. In the modeling literature, existing attempts to identify relevant competencies have focused on the specific technical skills required for specific technical model development. The other skills required to organize and conduct the stakeholder process seem to be more vaguely and poorly defined in this context. The situation is complicated by PM being an essentially transdisciplinary craft, with no single discipline or skill set to borrow ideas and recommendations from. In this paper, we aim to set the foundation for both the practice and capacity-building efforts for PM by identifying the relevant core competencies. Our inquiry into this topic starts with reviewing and compiling literature on competencies in problem-solving research areas related to PM (e.g., systems thinking, facilitated model building, operations research, and so forth). We augment our inquiry with results from a PM practitioners’ survey to learn how they perceive the importance of different competencies and how the scope of these competencies may vary across the various roles that participatory modellers play. As a result, we identified five core competency areas essential for PM: systems thinking, modeling, group facilitation, project management and leadership, and, more recently, designing and running virtual workshops and events. Abstract: The virtual reality (VR) technology has become increasingly relevant in recent years due to the advantages that occur through the representation of the real within a virtual world. One promising application area of VR is virtual shopping, i.e., providing customers with the ability to visit virtual stores instead of purchasing products on 2D websites or brick-and-mortar stores. To gain insights into the opportunities of the technology in the realm of shopping, we emphasize and discuss the literature on the use of VR for shopping based on a systematic literature review, thereby deepening our understanding of virtual retail concepts and synthesizing the empirical evidence on the advantages of VR. For this purpose, we developed a Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) based framework to summarize the key findings. Abstract: E-commerce has grown rapidly over the past years, with prevailing e-commerce platforms aggregating large amounts of customer data. This practice has several undesirable side effects, such as facilitating profiling that may lead to price discrimination and data feedback loops that can hamper competition. Moreover, data hoarding carries security risks through data breaches and undermines customers’ privacy expectations. On the other hand, convenience aspects and compliance regulation demand the processing and storage of user-related data. To address this tension field, we aim to conceptualize and iteratively refine a data-minimizinig e-commerce platform. Following a design science research approach, we identify design objectives and propose and implement a solution in which stakeholders receive only customer data that is indispensable for their part of the process. Our solution leverages digital identity wallets and general-purpose zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs). We aim to perform a criteria-based evaluation to assess our artifact’s feasibility and fitness from an interdisciplinary perspective. With our results, we hope to illustrate that combining state-of-the-art cryptographic techniques and an emerging digital identity paradigm allows reaching the user experience of incumbent e-commerce platforms while mitigating the undesirable socio-economic side effects of avoidable data disclosure. Abstract: This paper provides a literature analysis of digital dark nudging instances. Specifically, the literature analysis identified 14 relevant publications from various research disciplines. As a result, we systematically categorized the publications into seven instances of digital dark nudging (e.g., false expectations) within five application domains (e.g., e-commerce). Moreover, our results suggest that digital dark nudging leads the various adverse effects for individuals, such as monetary losses. We contribute to existing research by providing an overview of digital dark nudging research. Our findings indicate the need to investigate the long-term consequences of digital dark nudging. Furthermore, we pinpoint the need for clear differentiators between regular digital nudging and digital dark nudging, which is desperately needed to ensure to positive nature of digital nudging. Abstract: The adoption of Information Systems (IS) is among the critical topics for IS research and practice. However, despite rich insights across IS literature streams, many IS implementation projects still struggle with user adoption and realising benefits. This paper argues that a knowledge gap exists because research has paid little attention to the definition, manifestations, and effects of adoption management in mandatory environments. The article proposes definitions and systematically reviews findings related to adoption management at the cross-section of the adoption and benefits management literature. The findings show that adoption management manifests across the two literature streams as constructs, models, and methods. While some articles examine these manifestations in the analysis, many discuss adoption management as an afterthought in the implications for practice in discussion sections, and few articles explicitly label it adoption management. We discuss these and other gaps and provide avenues for future research. Collapse

Organizations aspire to share data. However, they struggle to identify and establish beneficial conditions for data sharing, and research still offers little support to exploit the potential of data sharing. We apply an exploratory research approach to develop a framework of beneficial conditions for data sharing. By combining ten expert interviews and a systematic literature review, we aggregate 23 characteristics that constitute beneficial conditions into eight categories and apply and validate the framework in a real-world case. Thus, we contribute to research by providing a fundamental understanding of beneficial conditions for data sharing and a compact target picture. Additionally, we enable practitioners to systematically assess an organization's current condition to set the course toward exploiting the full potential of data sharing. Collapse

Abstract: In a world where the amount of generated and stored data is steadily increasing, Data Science (DS) has emerged as an integral discipline for organizations to extract knowledge and value from these resources. Due to the high failure rate in these undertakings, new approaches to support the project management are urgently needed. The use of appropriate technologies constitutes a success factor in DS and its selection process is regarded as a strategic project management activity. As technology selection is not described sufficiently in current DS process models, a structured literature review is performed in this article that concentrates on the addressed technology layers, the applied decision procedures, and the specific technology instances of the identified approaches. The study shows that holistic technology selection approaches that consider all activities of the DS lifecycle and the entire required tool stack are severely lacking and should, therefore, be further researched in the future. Abstract: The development and increasing use of technology worldwide can lead to potential negative consequences for individuals' well-being and productivity. To counteract negative consequences, both scientific research and practice have shown increasing interest in digital detox research, a rising phenomenon of abstinence and temporary or complete disengagement from digital technologies. To lay a foundation for future research, we conducted a systemic literature review with a focus on the methodological aspects of the existing empirical digital detox studies. Our literature search process revealed a total of 65 studies. Our analyses of this literature basis revealed five different research fields (communication, education, tourism, well-being and health, work environment), and we analyzed the empirical studies in these fields regarding applied research approach, research method, and sample size. This review provides methodological insights to advance the scientific inquiry on digital detox research, a relatively nascent, yet increasingly relevant research topic. Collapse
