Abstract: A considerable number of contributions at the intersection of social media platforms and social entrepreneurship has been witnessed over the past decade. The multi-disciplinary nature of current literature necessitates inte grative insights on the topic. We thus undertake a two-pronged approach – bibliometric analysis followed by systematic review – to map the extant literature in a structured, objective, and quantitative way. We contribute to the literature as we (i) offer a classification of the literature in three clusters, namely ‘social media platforms, social collaboration and social marketing’, ‘social media platforms and crowdfunding, and ‘social media plat forms and crowdsourcing’; (ii) analyze recent research development in each cluster, methodological develop ment, countries co-authorship and evolution of research in the area; and (iii) propose a conceptual framework -accompanied by research propositions- that provides an overview of the literature at the intersection of social media platforms, various social entrepreneurial practices and their influence on the social enterprise perfor mance. Our review culminates with numerous impactful research avenues for scholarly progression in the area. From a practical standpoint, this review integrates scattered findings into one body, allowing the practitioners and policymakers to discern the role of social media platforms in dealing with emerging societal problems and increasing operational efficiencies of social enterprises (SEs). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review of its kind, offering unique perspectives at the nexus of social media platforms and SE’s performance. Collapse

Abstract: This study introduces the concept of outsourcing appropriation based on adaptive structuration theory (AST) to explore how organizations attain IT-dependent organizational agility through outsourcing appropriation. It ex amines the mediating role of IT alignment and the moderating roles of the adoption of cloud computing and knowledge transfer. The proposed model was tested using survey data from a sample of 170 IT executives. Our results indicate that the consensus of appropriation (COA) and faithfulness of appropriation (FOA) are positively associated with IT-dependent organizational agility, and the relationships are partially mediated by IT align ment. When adoption of cloud computing is high, the positive relationship between IT alignment and ITdependent organizational agility becomes stronger than when it is low. Interestingly, results also show that the moderating roles of the transfer of explicit knowledge and transfer of tacit knowledge in the relationship between outsourcing appropriation and IT-dependent organizational agility vary significantly. The transfer of explicit knowledge negatively moderates the relationship between COA and agility. The transfer of tacit knowledge positively moderates the relationship between FOA and agility. These findings deepen our under standing of how organizations gain IT-dependent organizational agility in the context of IT outsourcing. Collapse

Abstract: The newly issued International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) have significantly transformed the ac counting process and the accounting information system (AIS). Confronting the changes in information tech nologies (IT), using the AIS appropriately is crucial to derive accurate information from which to process business transactions and report information in compliance with the new IFRS. Built on adaptive structuration theory (AST), this study is aimed toward investigating how accounting regulatory changes influence AIS use, which consequently affects accounting process performance. Data are collected through a questionnaire survey of 250 accountants from 36 countries currently using the IFRS as their accounting standards. The results show that perceived system restrictiveness, IT professional support, and accountant’s self-efficacy significantly explain faithfulness of appropriation (FOA) whereas perceived effectiveness of controls on IT use does not. FOA in fluences exploitive and exploratory task adaptations, which subsequently predict accounting process perfor mance under the new IFRS. This study enriches the AST literature and contributes to both the accounting and IT domains. Our findings provide organizations with new insights into how to maintain the efficiency of accounting practice and business operations under the new IFRS. Collapse

Abstract: Digitalization is a hypernym that denotes the ground-shifting impact IT artifacts have on organizations. The term implicitly refers to core topics in Information Systems research, which now enfolds at increasing magnitude, speed, and reach. However, digitalization often lacks explicit references to domestic theories, concepts, and constructs in the Information Systems literature. Fundamental mechanisms that constitute digitalization as an interplay of organizations and information systems remain unexplored. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, based on extending extant theory on organizational routines, we propose four patterns that conceptualize digitalization mechanisms as an interplay of organizational routines and IT artifacts. Second, we demonstrate how more complex transformation trajectories of routines unfold, by concatenating our patterns to form transformation stories. On either level of abstraction, further research can build on the proposed patterns to theorize on how the interplay of IT artifacts and organizational routines constitutes the digitalization of work systems. Abstract: Globally, healthcare reforms are being initiated to address the tremendous challenges facing healthcare systems. Without exception, these reforms include the implementation of a variety of e-health solutions. Such e-health solutions are complex and have far reaching implications. We argue that while these implementations and adoptions of e-health solutions are necessary, it is essential that an appropriate lens of analysis should be used to maximise and sustain the benefits of IS/IT (information systems/information technology) in healthcare delivery. Hence, in this paper, we proffer Actor-Network Theory (ANT) as an appropriate lens to evaluate these various e-health solutions and illustrate in the context of MyHealth Record, the chosen e-health solution for Australia. The results of this study reveal that the implementation of eHealth is a complex process and approaching it nationally, serves to make it significantly more challenging with enormous barriers. Abstract: Failure to identify the right institutionalization framework has caused derailments of major public sector Digitally-Enabled Service Transformation (DEST) projects in the UK, such as the NHS-National Program for IT (NHS-NPfIT) and BBC Digital Media Initiatives (BBC-DMI). Although such cases have generated much debate among the research community, majority of the discussions have been dominated by technological imperatives and strategic choices views, ignoring the dynamic nature and role of institutions and people within such context. To understand this scenario, an analysis was performed on four largescale DEST projects in the UK public sector (NHS-NPfIT, BBC-DMI, TUO and DVLA-SSP). Findings indicate that the actors (stakeholders) and structures (procedures and resources) had significant roles in facilitating or impeding such transformations – mimicking the structuration process. Based on this, a high-level conceptual framework is drawn utilizing Institutional and Structuration Theory concepts to further explore the roles of actors and structures in DEST institutionalization process. Abstract: Recognizing that design is at the core of information systems development has led to a design-science research paradigm where differing kinds of knowledge goals give form to differing kinds of knowledge processes within a single study. This paper analyzes knowledge production in design-science research to explain how an endogenous form of pluralism characterizes such studies, making it problematic to associate any design science study with a single view of knowledge production. Instead, a design-science research study exhibits up to four different modes of reasoning, called genres of inquiry. These genres are derived from two dualities that contrast differing knowledge goals and differing knowledge scope in the knowledge production process. The first duality arises from the sometimes seemingly contradictory knowledge goals of science versus design. The second duality reflects the contradiction between the scope of the knowledge produced, which may be idiographic or nomothetic. The evolutionary and iterative nature of a design-science study compels different knowledge goals and scope at different moments throughout a project. Because of this momentary nature, a single design-science study can be associated with multiple genres of inquiry. This understanding of the variety in the genres of inquiry advances the discourse on the nature of design-science research and the justification and evaluation of its outcomes. Consequently, a corresponding set of criteria for knowledge justification and evaluation is provided for each genre of inquiry. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines the effects of cognitive and social factors on system utilization and performance outcomes. The literature has paid considerable attention to social influence as a determinant of individual behavior. We combine the concept of task-technology fit with concepts from adaptive structuration theory to elucidate social influence. In our model, we propose that support from a proper social construction in addition to task-technology fit leads in performance improvement in individuals. Empirical data from 317 individuals across 43 teams in ten companies are used to assess the theoretical model. Our theoretical model is supported by the data. Collapse

Abstract: Agile software development that provides software development organizations, the ability to respond to changes in turbulent business environments, has been gaining wide adoption. Agile software development projects are characterized by ‘just enough’ planning and lack of upfront commitment to scope, cost, and schedule. These characteristics pose conflicting demands on managers responsible for making funding decisions, because traditional approaches to funding IT projects are often based on well-defined scope, cost, and schedule. These conflicts demand the adaptation of traditional funding processes to suit to agile projects. We draw from Adaptive Structuration Theory to understand the nature of conflicts between traditional IT project funding processes and the dynamic nature of agile projects, and how these conflicts are addressed by practices that are appropriated in the process of social interaction between funding decision makers and development teams. On the basis of a multisite case study, we present a framework that explains how organizations adapt traditional IT funding approaches to accommodate the unique characteristics of agile IT projects. Abstract: Much of the BPM literature views business process design and implementation as a topdown process that is built on strategic alignment and managerial control. This view is inconsistent with the observation that information infrastructures, including a company’s business process infrastructure, are at drift, a term that refers to the lack of top-down management control. The paper contributes to resolving this inconsistency by developing a framework that conceptualizes business processes as emergent organizational routines that are represented, enabled, and constrained by IT artifacts. IT artifacts are developed in processes of functional-hierarchical decomposition and social design processes. Organizational routines have ostensive and performative aspects, forming a mutually constitutive duality. A literature review demonstrates that the propositions offered by the framework have been insufficiently considered in the BPM field. The paper concludes with an outlook to applying the framework to theorizing on the emergence of business processes on online social network sites. Collapse
