Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) has tremendously transformed the patterns of security surveillance employed by governments. Although the primary goal of security surveillance is to maintain social order and enhance citizens' protection, significant privacy concerns were raised for citizens given the unprecedented amount of personal data accessed by various types of AI-powered security surveillance (AISS) systems, such as facial recognition technologies. Nonetheless, policymakers and academia rarely paid attention to the citizens' views as the main stakeholders of these systems. Motivated by this, in this study, we develop a theoretical model drawing on the assertions of the Social Exchange Theory (SET) to explain the factors and mechanisms that influence citizens' support for AISS. In particular, we elaborate on the role of privacy-security tradeoff, trust, and power and their interplay in explaining citizens' supportive attitudes. Potential contributions from this research to theory and practice are also outlined. Collapse

Abstract: Customers in sales processes increasingly encounter automated sales agents (ASAs) that complement or replace human sales agents (HSAs). Yet, little is known about whether, how, and why customers respond to ASAs in contrast to HSAs across successive decision stages of the same sales process. Even less is known about customer responses to HSA-ASA combinations, where both agents assume distinct roles and focus on complementary tasks that are traditionally performed by only one single sales agent. Against this backdrop, this paper explores the influence of increasingly common sales representative (rep) types (i.e., ASA, HSA, and HSA-ASA) on customer decisions across sales stages. Drawing on information processing theory and the literature on hedonic-utilitarian decision making, we investigate customer responses to text-based ASAs from vendor companies in two common early stages of email sales processes (i.e., sales initiation stages) when customers successively decide whether to indicate their initial interest in an offer and then, whether to provide their contact information. Specifically, we conducted two complementary multi-decision experiments, namely (1) a randomized field experiment in a high-stakes sales initiation setting (n = 325) and (2) a subsequent randomized online experiment to complement the real-world insights (n = 408). Our core findings reveal reversing effect patterns of sales rep types across stages: although customers are more likely to indicate their initial interest to HSAs (versus ASAs) because of HSAs’ higher levels of social presence, they are less likely to provide contact information to HSAs because of HSAs’ lower levels of performance expectancy and effort expectancy. We also show that HSA-ASA combinations can be reasonable options for single ASAs, yet contextual features of the sales setting may affect differential customer responses to HSA-ASA combinations (versus ASAs) in each sales stage. Taken together, we uncover shifting effect patterns in customer responses to sales rep types across successive sales stages and shed light on the consecutive underlying mechanisms that explain these shifts. These findings have significant implications for vendor companies seeking to allocate HSAs and/or ASAs effectively across various decision stages in sales processes and beyond. Abstract: To cope with the digital transition exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, managers of manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) need to adopt innovative practices to face uncertain scenarios and create longterm value, identified as transformational entrepreneurship practices. Among emerging digital technologies, digital platforms are shaping and outgrowing the e-commerce channel representing a potential opportunity for manufacturing SMEs to embrace digital transformation. Drawing on affordance theory, this research uses a mixed method approach to investigate how manufacturing SMEs’ e-commerce commitment and digital platform adoption stimulate the actualization of three e-commerce affordances: consumer knowledge generation, inter­ nationalization, and customer diversification. Based on survey responses from 165 manufacturing SME man­ agers, we find that direct selling through owned websites actualizes consumer knowledge generation and internationalization, indirect selling actualizes customer diversification and internationalization, and agency selling through third-party platforms actualizes all three affordances. The relationship between e-commerce commitment and ecommerce performance is mediated by consumer knowledge generation and internationali­ zation but not by customer diversification. A fsQCA analysis outlines seven configurations actualizing these ecommerce affordances by pairing different ecommerce approaches with degrees of e-commerce commitment. Finally, an analysis of open-ended questions from 24 respondents complements the study and deeply interprets the seven unique configurations outlined. Collapse

Abstract: What drives Open-Source Software (OSS) development communities to participate in Blockchain projects? Developer participation incentives in OSS are well studied but the nature of this incentive changes with a novel addition of the token or cryptocurrency. This longitudinal study followed nearly 6,000 OSS blockchain projects, their prices, and developer movements throughout 2020. We find that asset price does impact developer interest and contributions. We find lagged price movements of tokens statistically significant in later developer activity. Social aspects of developer interest are more complex and shift as we consider projects within different market cap strata. We find that lower profile blockchain projects benefit from both price movements and developer activity. Implications for managers include recruitment efforts and equity compensation. Collapse

Abstract: Conventional accounts describe whistleblowing as prosocial behavior, where whistleblowers are largely driven by a desire to help or improve their organization. Yet individuals are not only members of their organization; they also belong to internal social groups that affect behavior and influence decision making. In this paper, we focus on these intraorganizational dynamics and theorize two ways in which group affiliations are likely to affect whistleblowing. When an individual observes wrongdoing committed by a person affiliated with the same group, higher group cohesion decreases the likelihood of blowing the whistle because of potential whistleblowers’ greater loyalties toward group members and a desire to protect the reputation of the group. When an individual observes wrongdoing committed by a person not affiliated with the same group, higher group cohesion increases the likelihood of blowing the whistle, as potential whistleblowers feel they have the support of fellow group members, lessening fears of retaliation. Using unique data on actual and hypothetical whistleblowing among U.S. federal employees in 24 departments and agencies coupled with a vignette experiment, we find support for our arguments. By showing how group affiliations inform whistleblowing decisions, we reveal how variation in social structure leads to heterogeneity in responses to wrongdoing. Together, these results reveal tradeoffs in the detection of misconduct and help explain why wrongdoing in organizations may be so difficult to eradicate. Collapse

Abstract: The digital movement has radically altered how manufacturing companies interact with their customers. By using Artificial Intelligence (AI), companies have drastically changed their value co-creation (VCC) strategies. We adopt a case study approach and engage with an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to get a grasp of the phenomenon. Among the data collection methods we assume, we conduct semi-structured interviews with the company project team and its customer base. In addition, we collect secondary data and run focus groups within the studied firm's management team. This research in progress will advance a framework linking VCC with service maturity and identify the performance metrics required for the AI-based journey. Such a framework may assist practitioners in building services based on AI and VCC. Ultimately, we plan to offer theoretical implications to progress the AI and VCC debate and propose future research suggestions. Collapse

Abstract: There is a growing interest in understanding the role of genetics in explaining heterogeneity in behaviors, including those related to information systems (IS). The majority of the recent genetics research focuses on searching the entire genome in genome-wide association studies (GWASs) to link DNA to human traits. The results of GWASs can be used on datasets to compute a measure of genetic propensity known as a polygenic score, or PGS. PGSs are widely viewed as the future of genetics research. We conducted an exploratory study, in the context of information technology (IT) use, to examine if the PGS approach can be used to better understand the role of genetics in IS research. Consistent with our hypotheses, genetic endowments associated with Educational Attainment and General Cognition positively predict technology use, and genetic endowments associated with Neuroticism, Depressive Symptoms, Myocardial Infarction, and Coronary Artery Disease negatively predict technology use more than half a century later (genetic endowments are established at conception and our sample consists of individuals aged 50 to 80). Many of the characteristics known to be associated with heterogeneity in IT use (e.g., trust, education) appear to be mediators linking PGSs to IT use. Nonetheless, a number of PGSs maintain meaningful direct effects.This appendix 26 provides additional background and details on molecular genetics, and some of the major issues surrounding the construction and use of GWASs and PGSs. For readers interested in learning more, we recommend Browne and Walden's (2020) Appendix A for additional details on molecular genetics and the structure of DNA, Duncan et al. Abstract: User generated videos are the most prevalent online products on social media platforms nowadays. In this context, thumbnails (or cover images) serve the important role of representing the video content and attracting viewers' attention. In this study, we conducted a content analysis of cover images on the Bilibili video-sharing platform, the Chinese counterpart to YouTube, where content creators can upload videos and design their own cover images rather than using automatically generated thumbnails. We extracted four components -snapshot, background, text overlay, and face -that content creators use most often in cover images. We found that the use of different components and their combinations varies in cover images for videos of different duration. The study sheds light on human input into video representation and addresses a gap in the literature, as video thumbnails have previously been studied mainly as the output of automatic generation by algorithms.
