Abstract: Using mixed reality (MR) glasses for preoperative patient education (PPE) can help patients understand the purpose and risks of surgical procedures through informative visualizations. However, patients tend to be critical regarding the use of MR glasses in healthcare and often prefer the status quo of healthcare services provided. This study explores the resistance to MR technologies in PPE through the lens of the status quo bias theory by surveying n = 171 participants. We conducted a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis revealing configurations that provide a typological understanding of patient resistance. This allows healthcare stakeholders to take more targeted interventions to promote MR adoption. Notably, the results indicate that healthcare providers need to be transparent in communicating the benefits and drawbacks of using MR, as uncertainty costs are the main driver of resistance to MR glasses in PPE. Abstract: Digital nudging in information systems has become widely prevalent to guide consumers during online decision-making. However, while nudging is about improving the decisions and behaviors in various domains, limited research has explored when digital nudges unethically depart from their intended purpose, whereby opt-in favors profit motives over the user’s best interests. In e-commerce, we defined this as a digital dark nudge (DDN) and explored its use in multiple scenarios against a typical shopping experience. Using an online experiment, we study the economic intentions and emotional perceptions of DDNs, while also accounting for impulsiveness as a moderating personality trait. This study first attempts to use priming and status quo bias as a theoretical lens. Empirical results show increasing evidence of the perverse effects of using DDNs in online ecommerce whereby consumers revert to their status quo, less likelihood of purchase. Our results provide further warning to practitioners about their use of ethical practices such as digital nudging. Collapse

Abstract: Drawing from status quo bias theory and coping theory, this study examines how the inertial use of incumbent web payment (WP) services influences users’ intention to use new mobile payment (MP) services. By conducting an online survey (n = 491), this study reveals that inertia demonstrates triple effects on intention to use MP services: direct, bias, and moderating. The direct effect suggests that inertia directly decreases intention to use MP. The bias effect means that inertia leads to biased assessment of perceived value and perceived threat, thereby decreasing intention to use MP. The moderating effect denotes that inertia strengths the relationship between perceived controllability and intention to use MP. We expect that these findings can provide noteworthy insights for the intervention and prevention of inertia in the web-mobile payment transition context. Collapse

Abstract: Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), a type of blockchain, refers to a decentralized peer-to-peer networkbased transaction ledgers for greater transparency without arbitrating and monitoring central authority. DLT can transform financial markets and payments industries through technology innovation and digital transformation of extant governance structures and processes for transferring digital assets, including bitcoin, in real-time to enable faster efficient payments, clearing, and settlement. While the IS adoption/investment research studied different types of enterprise information systems from the status quo bias theory perspectives, it has not studied DLT investment decisions in government. This research draws on the status quo bias theory to investigate DLT investment decisions to explore the feasibility of DLT in central banking. We found evidence of different types of status quo bias in affecting two of the most influential central banks' DLT investment decision-making. Abstract: The extant literature explored the reasons why many firms do not make a successful transition from adoption to assimilation of their ERP software. However, there are gaps in the understanding of the psychological and decision-making mechanisms which compel individuals in organizations to be bias or prefer to remain in their current situation. In addition, most of the prior studies focused on large firms in developed nations. This study presents a theoretical model that explains the assimilation of ERP software by integrating the tall poppy syndrome, switching costs, and loss aversion literatures through the lens of the status quo bias theory. We tested the model using data gathered from mid-size firms in Ghana, a pre- emerging economy. Our findings offer practical and theoretical implications. Collapse

Abstract: Switching behaviors of mobile payment application received scarce attention. This study investigates the key factors influencing the switching behaviors of mobile payment application through the perspective of the push–pull–mooring framework. Privacy concerns, alternative rewards, and inertia are identified as push, pull, and mooring factors, respectively. The model was tested with 3785 valid responses among Alipay users. Inertia was found to attenuate the relationship between alternative rewards and switching behavior. This study sheds new light on the switching behavior of mobile payment application users. Our findings inform service providers to retain existing users as well as attract potential users. Collapse

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThis study examines the effects of user experience on user resistance to change-particularly, on the relationship between user resistance to change and its antecedents (i.e. switching costs and perceived value) in the context of the voice user interface of an in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system. This research offers several salient findings. First, it shows that user experience positively moderates the relationship between uncertainty costs (one type of switching cost) and user resistance. It also negatively moderates the association between perceived value and user resistance. Second, the research test results demonstrate that users with a high degree of prior experience with the voice user interface of other smart devices exhibit low user resistance to change to the voice user interface in an IVI system. Third, we show that three types of switching costs (transition costs, in particular) may directly influence users to resist a change to the voice user interface. Fourth, our test results empirically demonstrate that both switching costs and perceived value affect user resistance to change in the context of an IVI system, which differs from the traditional IS research setting (i.e. enterprise systems). These findings may guide not only platform leaders in designing user interfaces, user experiences, and marketing strategies, but also firms that want to defend themselves from platform envelopment while devising defensive strategies in platform and standards competition. Abstract: The substitution effect between online and traditional channel has received considerable attention from academics and practitioners; however, little is known about the relative size of the substitution effect in different contexts. Since product attributes classification has been recognized as a useful way to evaluate the potential influence of the Internet as a marketing channel, the current study explored the extent to which the relative size of the substitution effect is the function of the product attributes. Drawing upon cross-channel dissynergy and status quo bias theory, we proposed and validated a research model on Chinese Internet users utilizing survey methods. The findings revealed a significant substitution effect between online and traditional channels, and this result was robust across different product categories. Moreover, the substitutive effect was more evident for search goods compared to experience goods. This study also found the direct influence of product involvement on purchase channel choice. This study contributes to both research and practice by advancing our understanding of cross-channel dissynergy and, more specifically, it provides insights into the design of cross-channel coordination strategies. Abstract: Although online social network services (OSNS), e.g., Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn, are enjoying rampant popularity, a subsection of the population (i.e., nonadopters) continues to forgo using them. Our study is one of the first to focus exclusively on what might motivate nonadopters to accept a widely adopted IT. By considering nonadopters’ inertia within the context of early stages of innovation diffusion and incorporating status quo bias theory into well-established technology acceptance model (TAM) relationships, this study uncovers the finding that people who report that they do not use OSNS would use them if they thought OSNS were easier and more enjoyable to use, and if they were persuaded by others to use them. Our findings suggest these nonadopters do not see the usefulness of OSNS, risks of sharing personal information publically, or the perceived amount of effort in using OSNS as factors that influence potential acceptance and use of the technology. This study contributes to research by offering an integrated theoretical framework that updates TAM with status quo bias theory to study nonadopters and offers IS practice guidelines for OSNS providers to attract nonadopters to accept and use the technology. Abstract: User resistance to information systems implementation has been identified as a salient reason for the failure of new systems and hence needs to be understood and managed. While previous research has explored the reasons for user resistance, there are gaps in our understanding of how users evaluate change related to a new information system and decide to resist it. In particular, missing in the explanation of user decision making is the concept of status quo bias, that is, that user resistance can be due to the bias or preference to stay with the current situation. Motivated thus, this study develops a model to explain user resistance prior to a new IS implementation by integrating the technology acceptance and resistance literatures with the status quo bias perspective. The results of testing the model in the context of a new enterprise system implementation indicate the central role of switching costs in increasing user resistance. Further, switching costs also mediate the relationship between other antecedents (colleague opinion and self-efficacy for change) and user resistance. Additionally, perceived value and organizational support for change are found to reduce user resistance. This research advances the theoretical understanding of user acceptance and resistance prior to a new IS implementation and offers organizations suggestions for managing such resistance. Collapse
