Abstract: A better understanding of the linkage between the objectives and outcomes of innovation will enable firms to plan better for effective utilization of their resources for generation of innovation. The current study enhances the understanding of relationships between the intent to innovate and eventual outcome as the intent to innovate drives complex processes and resource allocation that leads to a successful innovation. We analyze the World Bank innovation survey data of IT firms in China and find that drivers of innovation significantly impact the configuration elements of the innovation phenomenon within firms and influence how firms execute collaboration with external partners. This is turn impacts the product and process innovation generated by the firm. The findings imply that firms should decide about their choice of partners for innovation and the mode of engagement with the partners based on the drivers for innovation. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines the implications of a policy to remove the downvote option from an online discussion forum. Our analysis shows that after the downvote option is removed, both the number of posts and replies significantly increase. Interestingly, the average sentiment of the replies does not change significantly, which suggests that the removal of downvote option does not necessarily lead to users expressing negative impressions in their replies instead. We also find that the frequencies of product attribute related words significantly increase after the policy change. Finally, the average Gini coefficient of topics per post significantly decreases, suggesting that the topic distribution in replies became more diverse after the policy change. The latter two results together suggest that after the policy change users tend to post replies that are richer in information content. Our findings suggest that removing the downvote option may positively influence the discussion culture on the platform. Collapse

Abstract: This study concerns the risks of privacy disclosure when sharing and releasing a dataset in which each individual may be associated with multiple records. Existing data privacy approaches and policies typically assume that each individual in a shared dataset corresponds to a single record, leading to an underestimation of the disclosure risks in multiple records per person scenarios. We propose two novel measures of privacy disclosure to arrive at a more appropriate assessment of disclosure risks. The first measure assesses individual-record disclosure risk based upon the frequency distribution of individuals’ occurrences. The second measure assesses sensitive-attribute disclosure risk based upon the number of individuals affiliated with a sensitive value. We show that the two proposed disclosure measures generalize the well-known k-anonymity and l-diversity measures, respectively, and work for scenarios with either a single record or multiple records per person. We have developed an efficient computational procedure that integrates the two proposed measures and a data quality measure to anonymize the data with multiple records per person when sharing and releasing the data for research and analytics. The results of the experimental evaluation using real-world data demonstrate the advantage of the proposed approach over existing techniques for protecting privacy while preserving data quality. Abstract: In this study, we investigate the communication behaviour in Twitter during the rise of a corporate crisis. In September 2015, the emission scandal of Volkswagen (also known as “Dieselgate”) became public. We collected Twitter data and analysed approximately 400,000 tweets regarding the Volkswagen crisis. We take different perspectives on the data, by 1) separating the overall communication in peak and quiet phases, 2) analysing the sentiment in each phase, 3) looking at specific tweet contents, and 4) using statistical analyses to determine the significance of differences. Furthermore, we mapped the publishing behaviour of official Volkswagen accounts to the situational crisis communication theory (SCCT). The findings suggest that Volkswagen followed a strategy that is not covered by SCCT, i.e. keeping silent. Volkswagen’s tweets were not able to reduce the emotionality and sentiment of the ongoing Twitter discussion. Instead, even during quiet phases, the communication remained rather negative. Collapse

Abstract: Measuring peer influence in social networks is an important business and policy question that has become increasingly salient with the development of globally interconnected information and communication technology networks. However, in spite of the new data sources available today, researchers still face many of the same measurement challenges that have been present in the literature for over four decades: homophily, reflection and selection problems, identifying the source of influence, and determining preexisting knowledge. The goal of this paper is to develop an empirical approach for measuring information diffusion and discovery in online social networks that have these measurement challenges. We develop such an approach and apply it to data collected from 4,000 users of an online music community. We show that peers on such networks significantly increase music discovery. Moreover, we demonstrate how future research can use this method to measure information discovery and diffusion using data from other online social networks. Collapse
