Pushing Yourself Harder: The Effects of Mobile Touch Modes on Users’ Self-Regulation

Abstract: Many mobile applications use push notifications and reminders to explicitly educate, remind, and motivate users to perform healthy behaviors. However, users do not always act according to these explicit digital interventions. Our study investigates whether users’ self-regulation can be implicitly facilitated with a proper mobile interaction design. Specifically, we investigate the impacts of two touch modes that are supported by force-based interaction technology, that is, pressing and tapping. Drawing on the theory of embodied cognition, which suggests that people automatically infer meanings from their bodily actions, we conjecture that pressing, compared with tapping, enhances self-regulation because the action of pressing on the touchscreen embodies resolute approach motivation toward goals. We test our hypotheses in three experiments. The first experiment investigates beverage choices on a mobile app; the second experiment examines goal setting on a fitness app; and the third experiment focuses on personal hygiene learning on a mobile education app. The results from the three experiments show that pressing actions can improve users’ self-regulation in selecting a healthier but less tasty beverage (Study 1), setting higher exercise goals and performing more physical exercise (Study 2), and reducing lapses in maintaining personal hygiene (Study 3). In addition, such effects were more salient among users with a higher level of health knowledge and a promotion-focused health orientation. This study contributes to healthcare IT research by showing that mobile interaction can be leveraged to nudge users toward enhanced self-regulation. Abstract: Digital platforms attempting to penetrate markets and establish novel businesses need to not only seek market share and profit, but also to establish their legitimacy-that is, the social acceptability of their business operations. Information Systems and Management are just beginning to understand digital platform strategies for establishing legitimacy. There is also relatively little attention to how the special features of digital platforms influence their legitimation strategies. Through a multi-method study on ride-hailing platforms in Southeast Asia, I show that digital platforms trying to penetrate markets can wield known legitimation strategies in exceptional ways, as well as employ some manoeuvres that can be considered novel. I contribute to the literature on the strategic management of information systems by uncovering how platform features other than network effects, such as asset provision offloading and intermediation, accord strategic advantage to the legitimation efforts of digital platform firms. Abstract: Essential to effective and efficient collaboration among natural crisis responders is the fast and ample crisis-related data, including victims' data (e.g., their locations and needs). However, the reality often falls short of it because the responders deployed by different crisis response agencies using various digital forms result in an incomplete and delayed view of crisis information. Attempts to enforce a unified digital form proposed by a leading agency or the pre-developed one co-created by several agencies had been made but failed. This research, based mainly on qualitative data collected, proposes an adaptability-by-bricolage approach of a digital interoperability solution for immediate digital collaboration among crisis responders during the crisis response. Abstract: The governance of corruption is increasingly important in a global business environment involving ever more frequent transactions across diverse institutional contexts. Previous scholarship has theorized a fundamental tension between the enforcement of organizational compliance and the achievement of social ends, finding that efforts to remedy policy-practice decoupling in the governance of corruption and other complex global issues can exacerbate means-ends decoupling. However, these studies have tended to apply a rather static lens to a highly evaluative and processual phenomenon, meaning we still lack in-depth understanding of the dynamics underlying the interactive communicative processes of sensemaking and negotiation involved in working out the problems of both means-ends and policy-practice decoupling across different institutional contexts. To address this gap, we present a longitudinal qualitative study of the governance of corruption that identifies the emergence of locally contingent and open-ended sensemaking processes arising from and surrounding problems of decoupling. Specifically, we identify four key sensemaking mechanisms across different contexts and periods that ultimately shifted the focus of the actors away from a compliance-based approach toward a new shared understanding of progress as achievement, i.e., the mechanisms of localized theorizing, leveling, recalibrating, and public criticizing. Based on these findings, we develop a model to explain the role of sensemaking in the governance of corruption and the dynamics of decoupling. However, factors such as the adoption of mobile phones create a favorable environment for mobile health technology, yielding a promising avenue for the development of the Global South through digital innovation. Previous studies, however, have not provided a comprehensive assessment of available tuberculosis applications and their features. To bridge this gap, we conducted a systematic review of existing tuberculosis applications to gain a deeper understanding of the current landscape. Our findings indicate that current tuberculosis apps have significant limitations, such as requiring an internet connection or being available in only one language. Our study contributes to extant research by presenting the first systematic analysis of tuberculosis applications and provides practical insights by highlighting areas of improvement that should be addressed in future app development. Abstract: The Global South (GS) refers to a block of countries in the process of rapidly catching up with the industriali­ zation of their economies. GS countries are trying to leverage their growing demand for innovative products and services to negotiate the uptake of novel technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). The latter can help such countries further stimulate their economic growth and become influential in dictating policies that could advance global development. However, a misaligned AI-adoption strategy entails the risk of alienating the social, economic, and even cultural requirements of such countries, ultimately leading to the incorporation of tech­ nologies not serving the needs of their users. Subsequently, we conduct a study whose goal is to provide guidelines on how to perform a comprehensive analysis of the AI ecosystems in GS countries, to determine their readiness to adopt and utilize beneficially these technologies. For this, we performed a qualitative case study of two GS countries, namely Senegal and Cambodia. The depiction of their AI ecosystems unveiled the need to stimulate their societies (i.e., by media exposure, education, etc.) in discerning the practical effects of AI. However, an impactful AI implementation requires a reciprocated satisfaction of the needs of multiple contributing actors. Finally, particular recommendations are offered at the level of these countries’ academic, industrial, and governmental constitutions, suggesting to focalize their resources in order to better energize (and optimally disperse) their research and entrepreneurial capabilities that could help identify the ways in which AI solutions can be of added-value within the premises of these two countries. Abstract: This research seeks to unearth Information Technology (IT) use by disaster responders (DRs) deployed by their affiliated disaster response organizations (DROs) for natural disaster response missions. Our on-ground analysis sheds insights into how several types of IT use behavior are surfacing as the DRs concurrently serve the role of a member of the ephemeral disaster response organization and the affiliated DRO. Informed by the role expansion lens, role stacking and its consequential IT use behavior emerge to explain how behavior towards institutional IT tasks is shaped by the location and activities of the DRs. This research expands the understanding of IT use in situations where users are disentangled from a preexisting institutional boundary through mission deployments. Such an understanding is particularly important since providing IT applications to the employees is a substantial investment committed by an institution. Abstract: Existing research at the nexus of institutional theory and entrepreneurship suggests that lowering institutional barriers to forming, growing, and exiting new firms can affect the types of start-ups that entrepreneurs found in a region. These institutional changes could influence entrepreneurs’ perceptions of the value of partnering with venture accelerators and potentially improve these sponsors’ capacity to select high-growth start-ups to fund and develop. This study evaluates these ideas by developing and testing three hypotheses. First, institutional reforms improve entrepreneurs’ perceived value of venture accelerators for resources that affect new venture development. Second, they reduce the average probability of being selected for new applicants, due to a surge in the number and heterogeneity of new applicants within accelerators’ local ecosystems. Third, institutional reforms increase the quality of selected cohorts for accelerator managers due to increases in the average quality and human capital of new applicants. To evaluate these hypotheses, I analyze data from 13,770 applicants to venture accelerators over multiple application cycles between 2016 and 2018 in 170 countries. I use a differences-in-differences design to estimate the effects of institutional changes on start-up selection after regulatory reforms that reduced the time and procedures to start new firms, obtain credit, and resolve bankruptcy for entrepreneurs. The findings have valuable implications for how governments, especially those in emerging and developing economies, can support high-growth entrepreneurship. Collapse
