Abstract: Algorithmic control (AC) uses digital technologies and advanced algorithms to control workers and is rapidly becoming a central component of modern work environments.While previous research has explored the implications of AC by examining its specific forms, mechanisms, or functions, this research argues for a broader understanding of AC as socio-technical systems, explicitly considering the technological and organizational characteristics of AC. The overarching goal of this study is to identify and conceptualize the core dimensions and respective characteristics of AC systems. To achieve this goal, we develop a taxonomy based on a review of prior literature and an analysis of 21 empirical examples. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application and usefulness of the derived taxonomy by applying it to three real-world AC systems. By adopting a holistic system perspective and developing a validated taxonomy, our study contributes to the theoretical understanding of AC systems and sets the stage for deeper exploration in future research. Abstract: In this paper, we provide a detailed insight into the complex coevolution dynamics that shape the alignment process by analyzing how different mechanisms and factors are mutually related in complex networks of feedback loops. We combine insights from the literature on alignment as a (coevolution) process with literature on alignment as a state to identify the different components of the organization’s socio-technical system that influence alignment, the relationships between these components, and the role that different factors play. In our empirical analysis (based multiple case studies) we then focus on the actual interplay between relevant factors. Using a causal loop diagramming approach - based on system dynamics – we analyze how these factors mutually influence each other through various feedback loops and thus shape the alignment process. We extend previous literature on the alignment process by identifying the way that the complex interplay between different factors shapes this process. By identifying the feedback loops between relevant factors, we also provide more insight into the complex bottom-up and top-down dynamics that shape the process, and that provide explanations for why this process is charac terized by transitions between alignment and misalignment. For practice, our paper provides a deeper understanding of the alignment process, which is a precondition for improving alignment practices in organisations. Collapse

Abstract: Digital forensics is an ever-growing field of science that is heavily involved in various fields. However, because of the expanding complexity of computer science, many new problems have arisen for digital forensics such as data scalability and cloud computing forensics data privacy, data traceability, integrity, and chain of custody. Blockchain can be useful for digital forensics to ensure security, like Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake. Proof-of-Work verifies that one node has done adequate computational work to other nodes on the network. Proof-of-Stake is a similar consensus mechanism but relates more to cryptocurrency. In literature, there are several attempts to synthesize the blockchain's digital forensics capabilities from a technical standpoint. After analyzing these review papers, we identify there is still a lack of classifying the solutions following an artifact classification taxonomy, understanding the broader impact of technical solutions following theories such as socio-technical theory, and summarizing the research contributions towards developing a design theory. The objective of this paper, thus, is to develop research propositions regarding the digital forensics use-case of blockchain following artifact taxonomy, socio-technical theory, and design theory. Abstract: Workarounds are goal-driven deviations from the standard operating procedures performed to overcome obstacles constraining day-to-day work. Despite starting as temporary fixes, they can become established across an organisation and trigger the innovation of processes and IT artefacts that can resolve misfits permanently. Although prior research has elicited antecedents and types of workarounds, it is not known how workarounds diffuse in an organisation and, thereby, innovating co-workers' activities, IT artefacts, and organisational structures. The results of our multiple two-year case study provide unique empirical insights into the diffusion of workarounds and how they can act as generative mechanisms for bottom-up process innovation. Abstract: The concept of the user has persisted in information systems research and practice since the field’s inception in the 1950s. However, the roles that people play and the activities they perform have changed considerably over time. People now engage with digital technologies for all kinds of activities and in all kinds of ways, including for both personal and professional purposes. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to reconceptualize the term “user.” We discuss the various activities that people engage in with digital technologies, the myriad roles they play, and an essential shift in what the term “user” means. Users might be active in shaping how a particular information system is used, they might be partners with an information system, they might be used by an information system, and they may spend sizable parts of their lives living essentially within information systems. We conclude by discussing the implications for the IS discipline of reconceptualizing the term “user.” Collapse

Abstract: Recent developments, including the rebranding of Facebook to Meta, have led to large-scale media attention on the phenomenon of the Metaverse. Although not being a new phenomenon in Information Systems (IS) research, many intricacies in virtual worlds remain unexplored. In particular , prior research has directed attention to users‘ lack of ownership rights, creating tension between the creator and user. To solve this tension, we argue that blockchain technology can potentially help to structure ownership rights. Therefore, our research explores a blockchain-based Metaverse through the socio-technical system lens. Our study highlights that, in the underlying case, the use of blockchain technology goes beyond the application of Non- Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and can also be found in the general organizational structure, blurring the boundaries of existing stakeholders. Our work contributes to research by providing a gaze into blockchain-based Metaverses and highlighting the potential application and benefit of the technology in virtual worlds. Collapse

Abstract: Many industrial firms know that inter-firm data sharing holds tremendous potential for the creation of new economic value. However, most of them are not yet willing to share data multilaterally for joint value creation. Consequently, they do not participate in so-called data ecosystems. In our study, we address this issue from a socio-technical perspective and apply a two-step qualitative-empirical research design composed of a problem-centered interview study followed by solution-oriented workshops. We have identified and prioritized the perceived challenges and present first solution pathways. We were able to assign respective responsibilities for needed actions to major roles in data ecosystems. Among others, we can show that the core participants, i.e., data owner and data user, and the governance body need to resolve key challenges mostly in a separate but complementary manner to help industrial data ecosystems emerge. Abstract: As AI decision-support systems are increasingly developed for applications outside of traditional organizational confinements, developers are confronted with new sources of complexity they need to address. However, we know little about how AI applications are developed for natural use domains with high environmental complexity, stemming from physical influences outside of the developers’ control. This study investigates what challenges emerge from such complexity and how developers mitigate them. Drawing upon a rich longitudinal single-case study on the development of AI decision-support for maritime navigation, findings show that achieving high output accuracy is complicated by the physical environment hindering training data creation. Further, developers chose to reduce the output accuracy and adapt the HMI design to successfully situate the AI application in an existing sociotechnical context. This study contributes to IS literature following recent calls for phenomenon-based examination of emerging challenges when extending the scope frontier of AI and provides practical recommendations for developing AI decision-support for complex environments. Abstract: EditorialWelcome to the second issue of Volume 32 of the Journal of Strategic Information Systems I am very pleased to introduce this 2nd Journal of Strategic Information Systems issue of 2023. It contains a series of thoughtprovoking articles.The 1st research article, "The influence of project initiators' person-to-person followership on project popularity in open source communities: The role of reach and importance," is by Qin Weng (University of Arkansas, Fayetteville) and Franck Soh (University of North Carolina at Greensboro). The authors write: Person-to-person (P2P) followership is an important aspect of major open source software (OSS) development platforms. In this age of social media platforms, P2P followership has significantly shaped the way users engage in OSS development by facilitating the establishment of connections among OSS users. Despite the prevalence of P2P followership, less is known about the impact of OSS project initiators' P2P followership nodes on their project popularity. This is a particularly important gap considering the low rate of OSS project success. We posit that OSS project initiators derive information and influence benefits from the quantity and connectivity of their P2P followership nodes … To test the hypotheses, we use a large panel dataset collected over 24 months from GitHub. The findings indicate that the quantity of OSS project initiators' P2P followership nodes including followers and followees has a positive effect on their project popularity. Moreover, such an effect is mostly dependent on the connectivity of the OSS project initiators' P2P followership nodes in such a way that highly connected P2P followership nodes do not impact influence benefits but they increase information benefits. ICT-enabled workplace inclusion practices and a new agenda for inclusion research in information systems," is by Monideepa Tarafdar (University of Massachusetts Amherst), Irina Rets (The Open University) and Yang Hu (Lancaster University). The authors write: Workplace inclusion (WI) is a strategic concern for organizations, yet is challenging to achieve. We investigate how ICT use can enhance WI. Based on qualitative data from a leading UK recruitment organization, we conceptualize five ICT-enabled practices -Expanding, Orienting, Enculturating, Leading, and Reflecting. Each practice entails the use of ICT to enhance WI through a distinct set of organizational activities. We highlight the Reflecting practice as key in enhancing other practices, thus developing a framework for ICT-enabled WI that constitutes inter-related ICT-enabled practices. We contribute to the literature on the strategic role of ICT for organizational and social good, an area of priority and focus for the IS discipline.The 4th and final article is a viewpoint article. "Responsibly strategizing with the metaverse: Business implications and DEI opportunities and challenges," is authored by Marco Marabelli (Bentley University) and Sue Newell (University of Warwick). Their article aims to lay out the foundations for IS research on the strategic implications as well as DEI opportunities and challenges of the metaverse, a sociotechnical system providing users with immersive, synchronous 3D experience of (virtual) reality through interoperable platforms and sensor devices.
