Abstract: This study reveals the paradox of technostress on the elderly due to the large-scale COVID testing during the postCOVID-19 period. Drawing upon the stressor-strain-outcomes framework, we examined how technology-driven stressors affect the elderly’s avoidance behaviors. Results indicate that two types of technology-driven stressors exert opposite influences on the elderly’s avoidance behaviors through the mediating effect of technology anxiety. Specifically, the elderly’s technology-driven challenge stressors exert a positive influence on their avoidance behaviors, while the elderly’s technology-driven hindrance stressors exert a negative influence. Moreover, stigma consciousness plays a moderating role in the relationship between the elderly’s technologydriven hindrance stressors and technology anxiety by strengthening the positive influence of the elderly’s technology-driven hindrance stressors on technology anxiety. Our findings deepen the understanding of the good and bad of technostress and provide implications for older adults, technology developers, and the government. Collapse

Abstract: In a longitudinal study of differences in framing an introduction of Grammarly, we find a gain framing to be more effective. Grammarly is an online spell-checking tool that can, for example, improve the text quality of students. We used the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology UTAUT to study framing effects on adoption behavior. In a survey experiment, we presented students with a description of Grammarly that was either framed towards potential gains or potential losses use would avoid. Contrary to prior findings in the context of IS security, we find a gain framing to be more effective. We discovered, however, that the framing was only effective after three months, which offers initial insights into the effects of framing in information systems and raises new questions. We plan to study this effect further in a follow-up study with a larger number of participants. Collapse

Abstract: Accelerated technological innovations have led to shorter product life cycles. Yet, consumers often decide not to discard the incumbent technology in favor of a new technology. To explain this decision-making process, a rich research stream has investigated subconscious motivations. However, there is little understanding of the role of conscious motivations and, more importantly, their interplay with subconscious motivations in their decisions. Using the value appreciation perspective, we controlled for the predictors of the second version of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) and leverage prospect theory to enrich our understanding of users’ continuance intentions. We conceptualize status quo preference with two new constructs—namely, the value of status quo and users’ commitment to status quo—and integrate them with other known predictors of continuance intentions (related to an incumbent system)—i.e., trust and habit. We empirically test our model in two studies. Study 1 was conducted among 2,096 users of smartphones in Hong Kong. Study 2 reports longi­ tudinal data, across three waves of data collection over a period of six months, from 240 analysts introduced to a new technology to support their work in a large financial services organization. The findings support our model and suggest that (1) users’ status quo preferences significantly determine continuance intentions; and (2) trust and habit have an effect on users’ status quo preferences. These findings advance knowledge on continuance intentions by integrating the effects of users’ conscious and subconscious intentions to continue using the incumbent technology. Collapse

Abstract: As online group buying (OGB) businesses increasingly face strong competition, understanding the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of their customers is critical. Hence, the purpose of this study is to understand why customers choose one OGB vendor over others. By extending the transaction cost economics (TCE) theory, we explain OGB customers’ purchase behavior. We conducted a two-stage online survey. The first survey (T1) captured the perceptions of the respondents before making a purchase (i.e., purchase intention and its antecedents, namely unpredictability, trust, customizability, and frequency of OGB use). In the second stage (T2), we collected responses from the participants of the first study who committed at least one purchase in the last month. The second survey collected responses about the frequency of OGB use, purchase behavior, and online customer review (OCR). Data were analyzed with partial-least-square-based structural equation modelling technique (PLS-SEM). Results suggest that unpredictability, trust, and customizability influence purchase intention and are influenced by the frequency of OGB use. In addition, customizability decreases unpredictability. Finally, in seeking an answer to how to convert potential customers into actual customers, we found that OCR is a moderator of the relationship between purchase intention and purchase behavior. The findings from the longitudinal study extend TCE theory in electronic markets by capturing the OGB dynamics (i.e., antecedents and effects), the mediating effects (i.e., purchase intention) and the moderating effect (i.e., OCR) in a robust nomological relationship. Abstract: The growing complexity of systems, the increasing intensity of their use, and the greater prominence of technology in supporting organizational activities has meant that information systems (IS) professionals in organizations have to go beyond offering routine task-related support when working with their non-IS colleagues. For organizations to see IS professionals as effective, they have to carry out empathic behaviors such as sharing their IT knowledge with their non-IS colleagues and taking the initiative to minimize inconveniences during IS projects. Drawing from the organizational citizenship behavior concept, we develop a multilevel research model to examine how behaviors that IS professionals perform influence IS departments' effectiveness. Using data from more than 1,000 respondents working in the global finance industry, we conducted both cross-level and unit-level analyses and found results that support our arguments. Our results deepen the extent to which we understand the role that IS professionals play in supporting post-adoption IS use and digitally empowering business units while also performing their traditional roles. Abstract: Governments worldwide are using digital contact tracing (DCT) apps as a critical element in their COVID-19 pandemic lockdown exit strategy. Despite substantial investment in research and development, the public’s acceptance of DCT apps has been phenomenally low, signaling resistance among potential users. Little is known about why people would resist using the DCT app, a useful innovation that can potentially save millions of human lives. This study explores the determinants and consequences of citizens’ resistance to use DCT apps using a sequential two-stage mixed-methods approach. The preliminary qualitative study analyzed interviews of 24 Indian smartphone users who chose not to use or discontinued the DCT app after an initial trial. In the quan­ titative stage, an integrated model based on innovation resistance theory and distrust theory was tested using the survey data collected from 194 non-adopters of the DCT app from India. The findings revealed that the factors, distrust, value barrier, information privacy concerns, and usage barrier predicted the resistance to the DCT app, and resistance, in turn, predicted intention to use. Additionally, distrust was found to be a key mediator between innovation barriers and resistance. The insights from this study could help the developers and policymakers formulate strategies for implementing DCT interventions during future disease outbreaks. Collapse

Abstract: This study aimed to identify the various factors that may influence customer service representatives’ perceptions of artificial intelligence (AI)-based conversational agents (CAs) for customer service. By analyzing 180 publications, a conceptual research model is developed for identifying the factors that may influence customer service representatives’ perceptions of AI-based CAs for customer service. The underlying conceptual research model comprises ten factors. The study is grounded in the application of the Technology Acceptance Model 2 (TAM 2) approach. The research model is empirically evaluated with survey data from 128 participants. Our results show that the direct positive effect of subjective norm on customer service representatives’ perception of using AIbased CAs in customer service decreases with increasing experience. Moreover, our results reveal new insights regarding trust. The results of this study provide an overview of the predominant characteristics of the influencing factors of customer service representatives’ perceptions of AI-based CAs for customer service. Abstract: Given the serious issues caused by privacy leakage, Privacy by Design (PbD) is gaining the attention of pro­ fessionals as a new privacy protection paradigm with enormous potential. This study proposes a UTAUT-based integrated model from the perspective of information system (IS) engineers, and explores the determinants of PbD implementation. The implementation of PbD and privacy protection measures relay heavily on IS engineers. However, there is a paucity of research exploring IS engineers’ acceptance of PbD, particularly research that considers engineers’ individualized factors and personal attitudes. Empirical data collected from 261 IS engineers in China demonstrate the rationality of proposed model and the importance of integrating conceptual constructs. The findings suggest that IS engineers’ attitude towards PbD implementation significantly impacts both their behavioral intention and their implementing behavior. IS engineers’ awareness of PbD is a predictor of their effort and performance expectancies, and intention to implement; IS engineers’ effort and performance expec­ tancies concerning PbD usage have significantly impact on their attitude towards PbD. This study reveals the factors that motivate IS engineers to implement PbD into their workflow and proposes for the first time that IS engineers’ attitude towards PbD usage is the key factor for PbD implementation. Users weigh the benefits with the risks (Privacy Calculus) and often opt for the wearable device despite concern that their information may or will be disclosed (Privacy Paradox). While past research has focused on specific technologies, the paradox of disclosure despite concern for privacy has not been the primary focus, particularly regarding the manifestation of the paradox specific to the acceptance and use of healthcare wearables. The purpose of this research was to investigate the role of privacy regarding healthcare wearables' acceptance and use.
