Abstract: Embracing a configurational view, this study attempts to elucidate how Social Networking Sites (SNSs) can be designed to enhance members’ identity-, bond-, and comparison-based attachment. Conducting content analysis on fifteen predominant SNSs, we elicit thirty-one technological features that can be categorized into deindividuation, personalization, and tournament affordances. An online survey questionnaire is then developed to solicit SNSs members’ evaluations on the features present on these sites and the form(s) of attachment. Through fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), we observe that the presence of deindividuation affordances combined with the absence of tournament affordances are associated with identity-based attachment while the presence of personalization affordances in conjunction with the absence of tournament affordances is an essential configuration reinforcing bond-based attachment. Conversely, comparison-based attachment is determined by the presence of tournament affordances in the absence of deindividuation and personalization affordances. Collapse

Abstract: Leadership plays an important role in changing employees’ behavior. This paper aims to investigate the relationship between paternalistic leadership and employees’ information security policy (ISP) compliance. We adopt social bond theory as the theoretical lens to explain the effect of paternalistic leadership on ISP compliance through social bond formation. We developed a research model and tested it using data comprising 314 dyads of employees and their supervisors in organizations. The results show that all three dimensions of paternalistic leadership— benevolence, morality, and authoritarianism—positively influence employee ISP compliance. The social bond partially mediates the effects of benevolence and morality on compliance intention. Overall, this paper reveals the positive effect of paternalistic leadership in improving ISP compliance and the mediating role of the social bond in explaining the impact of paternalistic leadership on ISP compliance. In addition, the mediation effect of the social bond suggests that the non-IT related routine behavior of leaders can also affect employee ISP compliance through facilitating the formation of social bonds with and among employees. Abstract: Scholars are increasingly calling for a deeper understanding of cyberharassment (CH) with the goal of devising policies, procedures, and technologies to mitigate it. Accordingly, we conducted CH research that (1) integrated social learning theory (SLT) and self-control theory (SCT); (2) empirically studied this model with two contrasting samples, experienced cyberharassers and less experienced cyberharassers; and (3) conducted post hoc tests to tease out the differences between the two samples. We show that for less experienced cyberharassers, CH is largely a social-psychological-technological phenomenon; whereas, for experienced cyberharassers, CH is primarily a psychological-technological phenomenon. Our study makes a threefold contribution: (1) it shows the value of integrating two theories in a holistic and parsimonious manner to explain CH; (2) it shows that SCT alone is a more relevant framework for experienced cyberharassers, whereas a combination of SCT and SLT better explains less experienced cyberharassers; and (3) it reveals that the role of technology in fostering CH is crucial, regardless of the sample. The differential, yet consistent, findings demonstrate that addressing CH is contingent upon not only identifying theoretical approaches but also identifying the particular samples to which these theoretical approaches will be more suitable. Of several implications for practice, the most important may be that anonymity, asynchronicity, and lack of monitoring are the technology choices that foster CH, and thus these should be mitigated in designing social media and other communication technologies Collapse

Abstract: Information security policy (ISP) plays a critical role in information systems security management. Past research using General Deterrence Theory (GDT) on employees’ compliance intention (CI) with ISP produced mixed results. We use survey data to investigate how other factors influence the relationship between sanction severity and employees’ CI. The results show that none of the investigated moderating variables interacts with sanction severity on employees’ ISP compliance intentions. However, the significant impact of sanction severity on employees’ ISP CI disappears when the investigated variables are included, and the impact of sanction severity is mediated by perceived efficacy and descriptive norm. Abstract: Bright Internet research was launched as a core project of the AIS Bright ICT Initiative, which aims to build an ICT-enabled Bright Society. To facilitate research on the Bright Internet, we explicitly define the goals and principles of the Bright Internet, and review the evolution of its principles. The three goals of the Bright Internet are: the realization of preventive security, the provision of the freedom of anonymous expression for innocent netizens, and protection from the risk of privacy infringement that may be caused by preventive security schemes. We respecify design principles to fulfill these seemingly conflicting goals: origin responsibility, deliverer responsibility, identifiable anonymity, global collaboration, and privacy protection. Research for the Bright Internet is characterized by two perspectives: first, the Bright Internet adopts a preventive security paradigm in contrast to the current self-centric defensive protective security paradigm. Second, the target of research is the development and deployment of the Bright Internet on a global scale, which requires the design of technologies and protocols, policies and legislation, and international collaboration and global governance. This research contrasts with behavioral research on individuals and organizations in terms of the protective security paradigm. This paper proposes validation research concerning the principles of the Bright Internet using prevention motivation theory and analogical social norm theory, and demonstrates the need for a holistic and prescriptive design for a global scale information infrastructure, encompassing the constructs of technologies, policies and global collaborations. An important design issue concerns the business model design, which is capable of promoting the propagation of the Bright Internet platform through applications such as Bright Cloud Extended Networks and Bright E-mail platforms. Our research creates opportunities for prescriptive experimental research, and the various design and behavioral studies of the Bright Internet open new horizons toward our common goal of a bright future. Abstract: Although most behavioral security studies focus on organizational in-role behaviors such as information security policy (ISP) compliance, the role of organizational extra-role behaviors—security behaviors that benefit organizations but are not specified in ISPs—has long been overlooked. This study examines (1) the consequences of organizational in-role and extra-role security behaviors on the effectiveness of ISPs and (2) the role of formal and social controls in enhancing in-role and extra-role security behaviors in organizations. We propose that both in-role security behaviors and extra-role security behaviors contribute to ISP effectiveness. Furthermore, based on social control theory, we hypothesize that social control can boost both in- and extra-role security behaviors. Data collected from practitioners—including information systems (IS) managers and employees at many organizations—confirmed most of our hypotheses. Survey data from IS managers substantiated the importance of extra-role behaviors in improving ISP effectiveness. Paired data, collected from managers and employees in the same organizations, indicated that formal control and social control individually and interactively enhance both in- and extra-role security behaviors. We conclude by discussing the implications of this research for academics and practitioners, along with compelling future research possibilities. Collapse

Abstract: This study investigated employees’ information systems security policy (ISSP) compliance behavioural intentions in organisations from the theoretical lenses of social bonding, social influence, and cognitive processing. Given that previous research on ISSP compliance has been based on deterrence theory, this study seeks to augment and diversify research on ISSP compliance through its theoretical perspective. Relevant hypotheses were developed to test the research conceptualisation. Data from a survey of business managers and IS professionals confirmed that social bonds that are formed at work largely influence attitudes towards compliance and subjective norms, with both constructs positively affecting employees’ ISSP compliance. Employees’ locus of control and capabilities and competence related to IS security issues also affect ISSP compliance behavioural intentions. Overall, the constructs in the research model enhance our understanding of the social-organisational and psychological factors that might encourage or accentuate employees’ ISSP compliance in the workplace. Abstract: This paper investigates the determinants of relationship attachment and subjective vitality in a social networking site (SNS) use context. Following the social bond theory, we hypothesize that utilitarian value and hedonic value would influence relationship attachment. In addition, drawing the concept of autonomous vs. controlled motivations and relationship attachment theory, we hypothesize that hedonic value, utilitarian value, and relationship attachment would influence subjective vitality. The hypothesized research model is tested by collecting data from 150 Facebook users from a Facebook group using Partial Least Squares (PLS) approach. The findings suggest that relationship attachment is predicted by only hedonic value. Interestingly, utilitarian value did not have significant influence on relationship attachment. The findings also suggest that subjective vitality is predicted utilitarian value, hedonic value, and relationship attachment. Collapse

Abstract: People participate in virtual communities (VCs) for knowledge sharing or social interaction. However, most studies of VCs have focused on elucidating knowledge sharing rather than predicting virtual social interactions. This study considers “quality of online discussion” an appropriate metric for assessing group-level outcomes of virtual social interactions, and thus for predicting member willingness to sustain an ongoing relationship with a virtual community (VC). This study develops a research model, grounded in Web interactivity, social identity and social bond theories, for predicting the quality of online discussion in terms of cognitive and social influences. Empirical results from an online survey of a VC verify distinct direct and indirect social influences (perceived internalization bonds and perceived identification bonds) and cognitive influences (perceived communication and perceived control). Implications for academics and practitioners are also discussed. Collapse
