Abstract: Cross-platform development frameworks continue to play an important role in developing of mobile applications. There are a plethora of possible frameworks to choose between, and all claim to give developers an advantage in one or more aspects of the development cycle. To further shed light on this area, our research investigates the selection of mobile cross-platform frameworks by investigating criteria and methods for choosing the best suitable framework for the development context. Our study confirm previous research findings and with that anchor the categorisation for a cross-platform comparison taxonomy. Our research further contribute with a criteria check-list to apply for cross-platform framework selection and showcase its use through a comparative study of a cross-platform application implemented in two frameworks. Although showcasing novelty in the criteria checklist, further research is needed to make the checklist robust and streamlined for public use. Collapse

Abstract: The technology lifecycle model is extensively used to study technology evolution and innovation. However, this model was developed for industrial-age material technologies and does not address digital technologies with nonmaterial elements. Therefore, a question emerges as to whether the level of technological materiality is implicated in different dynamics of innovation, as reflected in the technology lifecycle. Digital technologies evolve through discourse that involves interactions among multiple stakeholders that shape the evolutionary trajectory of the technology. Therefore, we set out to examine whether discourse about digital technologies that vary in their level of materiality manifests in different ways throughout these technologies' lifecycles. To do so, we conducted a study comparing the discourse around 10 digital technologies-five highly material and five highly nonmaterial-at different stages of their technology lifecycles. We identified three characteristics of discoursevolume, volatility, and diversity-and examined them for the 10 digital technologies by analyzing their corresponding Wikipedia articles. Our findings show that the discourse around technologies with different levels of materiality is similar in the initial era of the lifecycle but diverges in the two subsequent eras. In addition, we found that the discourse around highly nonmaterial technologies remains elevated for longer time periods, compared to highly material technologies. Based on these results, we put forth propositions that challenge and extend existing research on the relationships between the technological level of materiality, discourse, and trajectories of technology evolution. Abstract: Since the beginning of the recent global refugee crisis, researchers have been tackling many of its associated aspects, investigating how we can help to alleviate this crisis, in particular, using ICTs capabilities. In our research, we investigated the use of ICT solutions by refugees to foster the social inclusion process in the host community. To tackle this topic, we conducted thirteen interviews with Syrian refugees in Germany. Our findings reveal different ICT usages by refugees and how these contribute to feeling empowered. Moreover, we show the sources of empowerment for refugees that are gained by ICT use. Finally, we identified the two types of social inclusion benefits that were derived from empowerment sources. Our results provide practical implications to different stakeholders and decision-makers on how ICT usage can empower refugees, which can foster the social inclusion of refugees, and what should be considered to support them in their integration effort. Abstract: Many e-commerce platforms develop product ecosystems to capture and retain consumers. A product ecosystem consists of focal products, complementary products and supporting services, to deliver an entire experience to the consumers. Using the example of Amazon Devices, the authors explore how ecosystem bunding promotion affects consumers' product evaluation. Results show that, compared to consumers who purchased the products themselves, those who got the same products for free through ecosystem bundling promotion tend to write longer and more positive product reviews, but give lower product ratings. Besides, the negative effect of ecosystem bunding promotion on product ratings is stronger for low-involvement products than for highinvolvement products. In the future, we plan to explore how consumers' evaluation of a bundled product may affect their perceptions of other products in the ecosystem. This research will enhance our understanding of the product ecosystem and how the elements within the same ecosystem are connected. Collapse

Abstract: Intelligent Personal Assistants (IPAs) are increasingly being integrated in many consumer products such as smartphones or cars. However, according to recent research only 50% of the population is using IPAs displaying a certain resistance behavior. Moreover, studies on the reasons for IPA resistance are not available. Consequently, our study strives to close this research gap by identifying key drivers of innovation resistance and adoption behavior of IPAs. Using a large-scale online survey (n=168) we find that individual differences, data privacy concerns, trust in AI and perceived creepiness play an important role for innovation resistance. More specifically, trust in AI applications partially mediates the relationship between individual differences and innovation resistance. Additionally, perceived creepiness fully mediates the relationship between AI data privacy concerns and innovation resistance. Our results provide valuable implications for the development and marketing of IPAs emphasizing the importance of trust and perceived creepiness for a customer's innovation resistance. Collapse

Abstract: This research-in-progress suggests that smartphone users are more risk averse in their online behavior than PC users, presumably because of their lower attention and consequent tendency to avoid risky behavior. We analyze data from a cyber security startup company, which provides security solutions for domestic networks, about online user behavior in all devices in a sample of households. The analysis of about half a million URL requests shows that the use of a smartphone is positively associated with target URL safety, implying that a PC is more likely to be used than a smartphone to target unsafe URLs. Future stages of this study will include a controlled experiment in which device and risk will be exogenously manipulated. This work contributes to the mobile use literature, as well as to the security and privacy literature, by highlighting device-related boundary conditions in the susceptibility of users to phishing attacks. Abstract: Avatars are often used in online stores to compensate for the absence of sales agents or spokespersons. Studies show that the effectiveness of the utilization of avatars in online stores depends on characteristics of avatars and on the context in which they are deployed. Unfortunately, most studies investigating the effectiveness of online store avatars have focused only on human-type avatars. Our study extends preliminary research and investigates how perceptions of avatar fit differ between different types of nonhuman avatars in the context of different online store types and how these perceptions influence purchase intention. Results from a between-subjects experiment with 149 participants show that the evaluation of fit between nonhuman-type avatar and online store depends on the type of offering in that store. Furthermore, perception of avatar fit positively impacts online store visitors' purchase intention, and this effect is mediated by an increased perception of online store quality. Collapse

Abstract: The life-like collaborative potential offered by virtual worlds (VWs) has sparked significant interest for companies to experiment with VWs in order to organize convenient, cost-effective virtual global workplaces. Despite the initial hype, recent years have witnessed a rather stagnant use of VWs for collaboration in organizations. Previous research recognizes that the inherent uncertainties within the VW environment are factors limiting their utilization by businesses. Hence, grounding this research in uncertainty reduction theory (URT), we aim to understand the modalities and mechanisms for mitigating the uncertainties and fostering user trust within VWs so that they can be effectively utilized as a workplace collaboration tool. With this end in view, we propose contextualizing and extending McKnight et al.’s (2002) institutional trust framework to the context of VWs by examining the significant role that social presence has in influencing the efficacy of the institution-based trust-building factors of situational normality and structural assurance in VWs. Using a sequential mixed methods approach (Venkatesh et al. 2013; Venkatesh, Brown, and Sullivan 2016), this research integrates results from a quantitative study with findings from a qualitative study to arrive at rich and robust inferences and meta-inferences, with the qualitative method first corroborating the inferences obtained from the quantitative research and then complementing them by identifying boundary conditions that may limit the use of VWs in organizations for workplace collaboration. The results together suggest not only the direct but also the interactional (complementary and substitutive) influences of social presence on the relationships of the two institutional trust-building factors to user trust in VWs. Abstract: Resource pooling is known to benefit performance through reduced congestion, but primarily in settings with homogenous demand. In settings where demand is heterogeneous, pooling can be counter effective. The effects of pooling of staff when demand is heterogeneous and dependent are not known. We present a simulation model based on a service supply chain that delivers Interactive TV to customers. Customers expect high performance in terms of innovativeness and reliability. Based on the results of simulation analysis, we find that when target innovativeness of the service is increased, pooling outperforms not pooling, but the delays that are involved with pooling will make the system and hence its performance unstable. Stable and high performance can be realized through “unbalanced” hiring. This means that a target performance increase in the upstream stage of the chain (innovation), is accompanied by hiring staff in the downstream stages of the chain (QA and operation). Collapse

Abstract: The birth of the World Wide Web (WWW) in 1993, particularly its graphical user interface, offered marketers opportunities that were previously unimaginable. The WWW allows advanced marketing activities and more particularly interactive marketing, as the user is actively involved in responding to the vendor’s promotion campaign. Interactive TV, also referred to as iTV, combines the appeal and mass audience of traditional TV with the interactive features such as those currently available on the Web. Although personalisation is a practice used widely on the Internet by many sites, applying personalisation techniques over interactive television presents a number of difficulties. In this paper we focus on the design and testing process of the User Interface (UI) for the Interactive & Personalized Advertisement TV viewer. We argue that there are a lot of challenges involved in the designing of interactive TV applications. These are related with the differences of the medium from the traditional PC based Information Systems in terms of input and output devices, viewing environment, number of users and low level of expertise in PC usage.
