Abstract: Drawing on institutional anomie theory, we examine how the crisis in local newspapers has induced organizational wrongdoings in local communities. We argue that, because local newspapers are the primary source of accountability journalism in local communities, their decline leads to an anomic state that increases the scale of organizational wrongdoing. We also investigate whether institutional complementarity helps overcome the anomic state: Due to functional similarity, community social connectedness compensates for the scarcity of local newspapers. Our analysis of U.S. metropolitan areas for the period of 2007–2015 reveals that the positive relationship between local newspaper scarcity and the scale of organizational wrongdoing is not present in all communities but does appear when a community lacks community social connectedness. We also find that this moderating role of community social connectedness is observed only for internal organizational wrongdoings that are less visible to the public than external ones. Collapse

Abstract: While the emerging research field of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) claims to address the lack of explainability in high-performance machine learning models, in practice, XAI targets developers rather than actual end-users. Unsurprisingly, end-users are often unwilling to use XAI-based decision support systems. Similarly, there is limited interdisciplinary research on end-users' behavior during XAI explanations usage, rendering it unknown how explanations may impact cognitive load and further affect end-user performance. Therefore, we conducted an empirical study with 271 prospective physicians, measuring their cognitive load, task performance, and task time for distinct implementationindependent XAI explanation types using a COVID-19 use case. We found that these explanation types strongly influence end-users' cognitive load, task performance, and task time. Further, we contextualized a mental efficiency metric, ranking local XAI explanation types best, to provide recommendations for future applications and implications for sociotechnical XAI research. Abstract: Employees' nonwork use of information technology (IT), or cyberslacking, is of growing concern due to its erosion of job performance and other negative organizational consequences. Research on cyberslacking antecedents has drawn on diverse theoretical perspectives, resulting in the lack of a cohesive explanation of cyberslacking. Further, prior studies have generally overlooked IT-specific variables. To address cyberslacking problems in organizations, as well as research gaps in the literature, we used a combination of a literature-based approach and a qualitative inquiry to develop a model of cyberslacking that includes a 2×2 typology of antecedents. The proposed model was tested and supported in a three-wave field study of 395 employees in a U.S. Fortune-100 organization. This study organizes antecedents from diverse research streams and validates their relative impact on cyberslacking, thus providing a cohesive theoretical explanation of cyberslacking. This study also incorporates contextualization (i.e., IT-specific factors) into theory development and enriches the IS literature by examining the nonwork aspects of IT use and their negative consequences to organizations. In addition, the results provide practitioners with insights into the nonwork use of IT in organizations, particularly regarding how they can take organizational action to mitigate cyberslacking and maintain employee productivity. Abstract: We examine how institutional factors may affect microlevel career decisions by individuals to create new firms by impacting their ability to exercise entrepreneurial preferences, their accumulation of human capital, and the opportunity costs associated with new venture formation. We focus on an important institutional factor—immigration-related work constraints—given that technologically intensive firms in the United States not only draw upon immigrants as knowledge workers but also because such firms are disproportionately founded by immigrants. We examine the implications of these constraints using the National Science Foundation’s Scientists and Engineers Statistical Data System, which tracks the careers of science and engineering graduates from U.S. universities. Relative to natives, we theorize and show that immigration-related work constraints in the United States suppress entrepreneurship as an early career choice of immigrants by restricting labor market options to paid employment jobs in organizational contexts tightly matched with the immigrant’s educational training (job-education match). Work experience in paid employment job-education match is associated with the accumulation of specialized human capital and increased opportunity costs associated with new venture formation. Consistent with immigration-related work constraints inhibiting individuals with entrepreneurial preferences from engaging in entrepreneurship, we show that when the immigration-related work constraints are released, immigrants in job-education match are more likely than comparable natives to found incorporated employer firms. Incorporated employer firms can both leverage specialized human capital and provide the expected returns needed to justify the increased opportunity costs associated with entrepreneurial entry. Abstract: In recent years, the video game industry has invested significant amounts in the development of innovative elements for its products. However, it is still subject to debate whether these R&D investments always pay off. While prior research has confirmed that enhancing product innovativeness increases business performance in certain industries, corresponding findings for the video game market are lacking. This might be a result of missing theoretical conceptualizations and adequate empirical operationalizations of game innovativeness. Addressing this research gap, this study provides the first conceptualization and operationalization of game innovativeness, shedding first light on its performance effects. Based on longitudinal data on 351 computer games, our findings confirm that innovations in the game’s presentation and principle enhance short-term success, whereas innovations in a game’s storyline can be more of a hindrance than a godsend for companies. However, our results also show that performance effects of game innovativeness diminish over time. Collapse

Abstract: Cloud computing, financial incentive and patient-centered care are the game changers that deepen EHR diffusion beyond breadth. Based on the innovation diffusion theory (IDT), technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework and alignment literature, this study examines how these changes shape business requirement, service value and society need that drive different phases of EHR diffusion in terms of planning, adoption, usage and upgrade. A longitudinal analysis with the USA National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) reveals the impacts of different drivers on EHR diffusion. In addition to quantitative results, interview observations corroborate the relationships among game changers, decision drivers and EHR diffusion. The findings provide healthcare providers, system vendors and policy-makers the insights on the best practices of promoting EHR diffusion for long-term success. Collapse

Abstract: We investigate the longitudinal relationship between extraversion and experienced state anxiety in a cohort of Twitter users in New York using a linguistic analytics approach. We find that before COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, highly extraverted individuals experienced lower state anxiety compared to more introverted individuals. This is in line with previous literature. However, there seem to be no significant differences between individuals after the pandemic announcement, which provides evidence that COVID19 is affecting individuals regardless of their extraversion trait disposition. Finally, a longitudinal examination of the present data shows that extraversion seems to matter more greatly in the early days of the crisis and towards the end of our examined time range. Throughout the crisis, state anxiety did not seem to vary much between individuals with different extraversion dispositions. Collapse

Abstract: Existing literature shows that corporate investment relationships play an important role in the development of startups. Although startups are relevant sources of innovations, especially those that radically depart from existing technologies, they often have limited access to resources. Corporate investment relationships are relevant to startups because they help them access resources of their corporate partners, especially those that are necessary for innovations to eventually achieve commercial success. This study examines the possibility that these relationships might also affect how startups search for innovations, producing greater alignment with the technologies of incumbents. Investigating this possibility is important because it can partly offset startups’ distinctiveness in technological domains of search and accordingly undercut learning opportunities available to incumbents. We argue that, following the formation of a corporate investment relationship, considerations related to capabilities and incentives result in a startup shifting the search for innovations toward technological domains of its corporate partner. We also argue that the radicalness of a startup’s innovations and the corporate partner’s commercial success exacerbate this search shift. We test these propositions in the context of biotech startups. Our difference-in-differences analysis shows that startups forming corporate investment relationships increase search in the domains of their corporate partners relative to analogous change observed among matching counterfactual startups without such relationships. We discuss implications for understanding of the influences of interorganizational relationships on startups’ technological trajectories and on incumbents’ learning and adaptation. Collapse

Abstract: The sharing economy has experienced massive growth in the short-term shared-home rental industry. However, few studies have investigated the determinants of the number of customer reviews received by these shared-homes. To fill this gap, we were motivated to propose an analytical framework that identified these determinants, both explicit and implicit. We applied Poisson, Quasi-Poisson, and Negative Binomial regressions with a dataset consisting of Airbnb properties from ten different cities worldwide, while successful bookings were proxied by the count of customer reviews posted by guests. We performed a cluster analysis based on the properties to generate homogeneous “cluster cities” and performed the regressions separately for each cluster. Among host-generated features, superhost, host duration, bedrooms, and amenities became significant. Among user-generated features, overall review scores and negative sentiments were significant. We also found that the “superhost” badge moderated the effects of host-generated content on the count of customer reviews. Consequently, guests paid a higher “price per night” for “superhost” properties, while they overlooked crucial attributes such as “website features.” Through these novel “cluster-specific” recommendations, our study extends the existing theories and contributes to the literature of decision analytics and tourism management. Finally, we performed a sensitivity analysis to check for the timeliness and robustness of these determinants. Collapse

Abstract: In March 2018, a series of anti-social and racial riots in Sri Lanka led to a governmentcontrolled ban of all social media use in the country for 14 days. This nation-wide ban included the use of all social media such as Facebook, Twitter and communication apps like WhatsApp, Viber and WeChat. Until the day of the sanctions, a population of 23 million in Sri Lanka had never experienced government sanctions, restrictions or interventions on social media use. This sudden ban provided a unique window of opportunity to investigate social media non-use and use and how it might lead to psychological distress. Using a longitudinal study design of two surveys, analyzing data of 476 and 205 respectively, this study makes insightful preliminary observations of social media non-use and use continuum. Collapse
