Abstract: Multi-sided platforms must make decisions on both pricing and engineering investment and must continually adjust them as the platform scales over its lifecycle. Engineering investments can be allocated to features that improve a platform's standalone value, social features to take advantage of same-side network effects, or integration tools and boundary resources to facilitate third-party content creation. Guidance in the academic or practitioner literature is not granular. Moreover, relevant normative economic models that consider externalities are rarely dynamic. Hence, there is a gap in knowledge about how to best balance tradeoffs between different strategic decisions throughout the entire platform lifecycle. To begin to address this gap, we explore normative strategies for coordinating pricing and engineering investment decisions on a continuous basis under different ecosystem conditions. We build a simulation model informed by economics and marketing theory and perform extensive sensitivity analyses on key parameters in different ecosystem scenarios over a multi-period lifecycle. We find that pricing and investment strategies must continuously change to perform optimally. In particular, strategies that are most effective at launch often differ from those that are most effective during scaling as well as those most effective at maturity. We also find that the optimal strategy depends strongly on the monetization model and market aversion to price changes. Lastly, we specifically examine four different industry segments: mobile platforms, social media, the sharing economy, and business-to-business. The results provide evidence that the trajectory of platform pricing and investment strategies should greatly differ depending on industrial context. Collapse

Abstract: Introduction to the special issueInformation Communication Technology (ICT): People, Culture, and Globalization The broad objective of this Special Issue (SI) was to deliver new insights into the management of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the view of ICT users', consumers', or managers' cultural diversity, in order to enhance our understanding of how ICT connects people across countries or cultures and affects their behavior. Understanding how ICT and culture affect human decisions is timely and of crucial importance because ICT is a driving force behind almost any form of business internationalization or globalization. Although the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's war in Ukraine currently lead to a slowdown in business globalization, it is clear that many firms continue to operate in, or expand into foreign countries, as well as deal with people from different cultures within a country. Almost all firms and organizations today use ICT to connect with people and must therefore address questions of how culture affects ICT usage and user behavior, and what the consequences are for the organization.We therefore aimed to bring together a group of international researchers in marketing and related disciplines broadly concerned with business globalization and ICT management. The SI was initially planned as part of the Royal Bank International Research Seminar (RBIRS), which has since 2001 been very successfully held bi-annually in Montreal, Canada. RBIRC, the international conference version, was also very successfully held in 2010 in Tokyo, Japan, in 2012 in Shanghai, China, and in 2016 in Wuxi, China. RBRIS has since many years brought together likeminded researchers from across the globe, who share research interest frequently in fields related to the role of culture in consumer behavior, how consumers interact with technology, as well as links between the two. We thus planned to organize the 2020 edition of RBIRC at Kedge Business School in Marseille, France and link this SI to it as an opportunity for researchers to publish innovative and relevant work. Unfortunately, the emergence of COVID-19 as a global pandemic has scuttled our ambitious plans, and we were ultimately forced to cancel RBIRC 2020 for the well-known restrictions that prevented us making the conference meeting happen in Marseille. We regret these circumstances very much and hope that future issues of RBIRS can happen in-person again.Given that a number of authors had prepared targeted manuscripts before we cancelled the conference, we decided to maintain the SI, with the kind approval of the Editor-in-Chief, Yogesh Dwivedi, to whom we are most grateful. Despite the difficult circumstances, we received 11 manuscripts that underwent careful peer reviews, and we have finally accepted three of them for inclusion into the SI. The three papers cover three different forms of modern ICT, namely social media, human-like service robots, and P2P accommodation-sharing platforms. The authors of these papers use various types of methods and data to tackle different phenomena that enhance our understanding of how culture affects ICT usage and behavior.The first paper by Takhar, Bebek, & Jamal (2021) offers insights into the role of social media's liminal characteristics (anonymity and freedom) for ethnic minority consumers' social-cultural identity construction. Given their multicultural social environments, ethnic consumers in particular experience cultural tensions in their daily lives related to potentially conflicting online-and offline cultural-social identities. Focusing on Instagram and third-generation British Sikhs, and using a multi-method qualitative research design (observations, nethnography, and semi-structured interviews), the authors demonstrate how liminality enables imagined or idealized social-cultural identities with important implications for social media marketing, such as virtual brand communities. Marketers should consider liminality as a factor that empowers consumers' identity construction, which can help them develop stronger and more sustainable customer relationships.The second paper in this SI, written by Pitardi, Bartikowski, Osburg, Collapse

Abstract: We investigate the way service providers who operate on an online peer-to-peer (P2P) platform readapted their marketing choices to face the Covid-19 pandemic. Through an empirical investigation on a large dataset of Airbnb properties in Rome, observed from January 2018 to December 2020, we provide a threefold contribution by investigating how Airbnb hosts reacted to the Covid-19 pandemic shock, in terms of marketing choices, such as price adjustments and flexible cancellation policies; the direct effects of these choices on their economic returns; and how service providers on Airbnb reacted to address the new needs of their customers during the Covid-19 pandemic. The findings provide useful insights for researchers and practitioners and show that the adoption of combined marketing choices led to more than proportional effects on performances as it allowed Airbnb hosts to exploit profitable market segmentation mechanisms. Abstract: With the development of the sharing economy, online ride-sharing has become a primary form of commuting. Using secondary transaction data, this study investigates the associations between the heterogeneous features and mutual trust in sharing economy-driven online ride-sharing transactions. Based on an examination of 12,404 ride-sharing orders in Beijing, we propose a set of trust distribution maps using order location data to reveal heterogeneous spatial patterns of the relationship between online ride-sharing transactions and mutual trust. The results show that the historical order completion rate and order distance are positively associated with mutual trust in ride-sharing transactions, whereas order time and departure density negatively and significantly influence mutual trust. Furthermore, we use machine learning algorithms to predict trust. The implications for theory and practice and future research directions are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: User generated videos are the most prevalent online products on social media platforms nowadays. In this context, thumbnails (or cover images) serve the important role of representing the video content and attracting viewers' attention. In this study, we conducted a content analysis of cover images on the Bilibili video-sharing platform, the Chinese counterpart to YouTube, where content creators can upload videos and design their own cover images rather than using automatically generated thumbnails. We extracted four components -snapshot, background, text overlay, and face -that content creators use most often in cover images. We found that the use of different components and their combinations varies in cover images for videos of different duration. The study sheds light on human input into video representation and addresses a gap in the literature, as video thumbnails have previously been studied mainly as the output of automatic generation by algorithms. Abstract: We contribute to the emerging literature on quality certification by digital platforms by studying the launch of the Airbnb Plus service, wherein the platform inspects properties and provides a badge that presumably signals the quality of the property and the reliability of the host. Our identification strategy relies on the fact that the Airbnb Plus service was launched in different cities at different times, and listings within the cities received the certification at different times. Using a staggered difference-in-differences estimation strategy in conjunction with suitable matching methods, we found that the Airbnb Plus certification increased the weekly booking rate of Plus listings by about 6.8% on average (direct effect). We also found some evidence that non-Plus listings saw a temporary decline in booking rate when one or more nearby properties received a Plus certification (externality effect). The net impact of the Airbnb Plus service on the platform itself was an annual increase in revenue of about $37,500 for the average 2-kilometer zone in a U.S. city that included one or more Plus listings, as compared to matched zones without any Plus listings (local platform effect). We performed additional analyses, including a randomized experiment, to demonstrate the robustness of our findings. Overall, our results suggest that platform-endorsed quality certification has significant economic impacts-not just on the listings that receive the certification but on other listings on the platform as well as on the platform itself. Abstract: Live streaming has become increasingly popular in recent years for users to broadcast live events or experiences to an online audience in real-time. With the prevalence of the metaverse, virtual idols appear on the stage of live streaming. Unlike real human streamers, virtual idols are computer-generated avatars whose appearance does not exist in the physical world. Though existing literature has documented the effect of emotional displays of human streamers on viewers' behavior, whether emotional displays of avatar streamers affect viewers' behavior, especially viewers' consumption behavior has not yet been explored. To fill this gap, we focus on the live streaming of virtual idols and conduct deep learning approaches to investigate the emotional synchrony between avatar streamers and their viewers based on moment-tomoment data. Our analysis of large-scale video data shows that the larger the discrepancy between the streamers' acoustic-and text-emotions, the more likely the viewers will pay. This study sheds light on how avatars can be designed to leverage emotion to engage viewers in more consumption. Collapse

Abstract: Digital platforms have proven to be efficient matchmakers in our networked economy and society. However, their tremendous potential is a double-edged sword, and concerns about their malpractices and negative impact have risen remarkably. In the light of practical relevance, research on digital platform regulation (DPR) did not contribute very much. Especially information systems (IS) which, as a discipline, seems predestined to explain the problems at the confluence of technology–economy–society, has barely grazed the issue of DPR. Particularly, a contribution is missing that at least explores the problems with digital platforms systematically and comprehensively. In response to this aim, we pursue a two-step approach: First, we apply qualitative meta-analysis of 211 cases as well as a number of regulation papers and actual regulation endeavors to identify and conceptualize the problem scope and potential regulatory approaches for platform problems. Second, we condense our findings into a conceptual model. Our findings show that digital platforms exploit both platform- and monopoly-related problems to assert themselves in different markets. Through their impactful platform governance, they even have become serious challengers to the regulator in controlling market access, key conditions, and resources. At this, they rely on the efficient use of data and digital technologies to effectively orchestrate platform agents and their transactions. The outcome of the paper is a set of two structured instruments that fill a void in interdisciplinary research and provide support to DPR practitioners for a systematic approach to regulation.
