Abstract: As of late, the use of “digital” as a qualifier to established research concepts is increasing. However, we have yet to clearly establish what makes a “digital x” concept distinct from an “IT x” concept when “x” stands for well-established concepts such as strategy, infrastructure, innovation, or transformation, among others. In this paper, we review the need for, and merit of, labeling focal concepts in our field as “digital x” in contrast to using the dominant, incumbent label of “IT x.” We position the shift as a call to attend to new salient features that characterize contemporary settings of information technology use and its effects. Recognizing this need, we develop guidelines for future research by arguing what novel phenomena the label of “digital x” foregrounds and how insights gained through such foregrounding contribute to scholarship in ways that the term “IT x” does not. By doing so, this paper promotes clarity for the use of the digital x concepts and introduces explicit guidelines to delineate between the nascent stream of digital x research and established modes of IT x research. Abstract: Social media platforms and the forms of vernacular expression they support invite citizens to emotionally react to political content. This study focuses on the affective networks of emoji use in the Facebook comment threads on 18 politicians' public pages before the Finnish 2019 parliamentary elections. We aim to provide a more systematic study of the affective practices emerging from the use of emojis in specific contexts of online communication, such as in relation to particular political actors. We analyze the data using computational methods and network analysis and complement these methods with qualitative analysis. The results indicate that emojis are used to connect with ideological coalitions across the parties and to reinforce connections with political actors. Particular emojis become distinctive emotional-political signifiers whose connotations have departed from their original denotations and are formed and shared in specific communities in relation to specific political candidates and parties. Abstract: Recently, the topic of research data management has appeared at the forefront of Open Science as a prerequisite for preserving and disseminating research data efficiently. At the same time, scientific laboratories still rely upon digital files that are processed by experimenters to analyze and communicate laboratory results. In this study, we first apply a forensic process to investigate the information quality of digital evidence underlying published results. Furthermore, we use semiotics to describe the quality of information recovered from storage systems with laboratory forensics techniques. Next, we formulate laboratory analytics capabilities based on the results of the forensics analysis. Laboratory forensics and analytics form the basis of research data management. Finally, we propose a conceptual overview of open science readiness, which combines laboratory forensics techniques and laboratory analytics capabilities to help overcome research data management challenges in the near future. Abstract: Note: Acknowledgment of Country: We wish to acknowledge the Ngunnawal people, Traditional Custodians of the lands where the University of Canberra's primary campus is situated, and their ongoing connection to country, lands, and water. We pay respect to their Elders present and past and honor their enduring cultural ways of being, knowing, doing, and learning, and the continuing contribution they make to the life of Canberra and the region. We also express our gratitude for the generosity of First Nations people in sharing their culture and supporting us to undertake this Abstract:In the context of an institution-wide initiative of the University of Canberra (UC), Australia, to mandate the Indigenization of the curriculum in all its courses, this descriptive case study reports on a pilot project to redesign the syllabus of an Information Technology (IT) unit that is a mandatory capstone for all students undertaking IT degrees. The capstone previously included no Indigenous-related content or pedagogical approaches. Indigenizing of the unit was achieved by embedding and interconnecting Tyson Yunkaporta's (2009) 8 Ways of Indigenous Learning with the unit's content, teaching methods, and assessments, along with the Indigenous collaborative learning method Yarning Circles, in a design that could be expressed and unified in the teaching delivery to inform continuous adjustment and improvement of the unit's curriculum, and also potentially inform the Indigenization of other UC IT units over time. A Design Science Research (DSR) methodology was put into action to evaluate the previous curriculum (as expressed in the offering of the unit), to design its Indigenized replacement, to implement it with student cohorts over two semesters, to collect data on the experience, and to reflect on the successes and challenges that arise. This methodology can also be applied reflexively in future iterative cycles of continuous adjustment and improvement of the unit's curriculum by its conveners and colleagues to inform Indigenized designs for other units that currently have no Indigenous-related content. Abstract: The COVID-19 outbreak has witnessed a significant increase in the development and testing of healthcare chatbots. However, this could raise ethical concerns and pose challenges for responsible research in sensitive healthcare areas such as mental health. Our study focuses on the application of the Social Presence theory to mental-health chatbots. We use quantitative content analysis to determine if users in high-risk mental-health situations require a higher level of social presence from chatbots. Abstract: The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Digital technologies (DT) is proliferating a profound socio-technical transformation. Governments and AI scholarship have endorsed key AI principles but lack direction at the implementation level. Through a systematic literature review of 59 papers, this paper contributes to the critical debate on the ethical use of AI in DTs beyond high-level AI principles. To our knowledge, this is the first paper that identifies 14 digital ethics implications for the use of AI in seven DT archetypes using a novel ontological framework (physical, cognitive, information, and governance). The paper presents key findings of the review and a conceptual model with twelve propositions highlighting the impact of digital ethics implications on societal impact, as moderated by DT archetypes and mediated by organisational impact. The implications of intelligi bility, accountability, fairness, and autonomy (under the cognitive domain), and privacy (under the information domain) are the most widely discussed in our sample. Furthermore, ethical implications related to the gover nance domain are shown to be generally applicable for most DT archetypes. Implications under the physical domain are less prominent when it comes to AI diffusion with one exception (safety). The key findings and resulting conceptual model have academic and professional implications. Collapse

Abstract: As an increasing number of crowdfunding platforms recommend that entrepreneurs post multimodal data to improve data diversity and attract investors' attention, it becomes necessary to study how functions of multimodal data take effect to predict fundraising outcomes (i.e., success or failure). There is a lack of research providing a comprehensive investigation of multimodal data in crowdfunding. Rooted in language and visual image metafunctional theories, we propose a framework to explore ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions of multimodal data. We empirically examine the effectiveness of each metafunction, each modality, and their combination in predicting fundraising outcomes. The empirical evaluation shows the predictive utility of any metafunctions and metafunction combinations. The results also demonstrate that adding data modalities can help to improve the prediction performance. Collapse

Abstract: Government branding is a practice that can be tied to promoting an institution (long-term orientation) or a particular administration and its elected official (short-term orientation), using both physical and digital artifacts. Reviewing the related work in the literature, we document the existence and visibility of an administration-dependent government brand in a developing country by mining social media data and the Google 2019 Spanish corpus. We test the hypothesis that administration-dependent government iconography (e.g. a logo) can lead to a change in the perceived credibility of public information in digital environments. Using an experimental survey approach that parallels the application of framing, we find that short term orientated government iconography can be detrimental to the credibility of government institutions, while they can also be seen as social opportunity costs, as budgets invested in them can be capitalized in later elections and not in the mission of the temporarily branded government body. Abstract: Wine tasting is a multisensory collective activity because it involves other senses in addition to sight and hearing. The importance of these multiple senses for wine tasting makes it more challenging to digitalize than other collective activities. We conducted an ethnography and used a semiotic analysis to explore the strategies to digitalize wine tasting sessions. In so doing, we examined how small artisanal winemakers and wine merchants in Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, and Switzerland moved their wine tasting sessions online to compensate for their lost key revenue streams during the global Covid-19 crisis. Based on our analysis, we present a typology of virtual wine tasting and illustrate how the approach to digitalize wine tasting evolved from a reactive approach to a more proactive one. We also identify strategies to digitalize wine tasting and characterize its social space. We discuss some avenues to regard virtual wine tasting as something more than just a digital representation of in-person wine tasting session by highlighting the mediating role of an information system. Finally, we propose some implications for digitalizing other multisensory collective activities. Collapse
