Abstract: This paper explores how to bridge the field of IS on sustainability with Sustainability Transitions Research (STR). Using a bibliometric analysis of 5 IS conference proceedings, it maps possibilities for such bridging, moving beyond the current approaches of GreenIT. Semantic content analysis of IS abstracts and keywords indicates themes characterizing GreenIT, focusing mostly on sustainability practice on the organizational level. In contrast, sustainability research (systems-level) is still uncharted territory for the IS community. Social network analysis of the authors and journals shows that collaboration and co-citation "within" the IS community are as low as the connection "without". We propose that more diffusion of IS theory and methods through Design Science may enrich current STR to be truly data-driven and theory-guided. First, the mapping suggests that IS theorizing can augment STR to be more generalizable for the digital era. Second, the thematic patterns suggest that Design Science methods and artifacts can augment the design of large-size STR studies bringing a more robust and data-driven theory-guided analysis of system innovation and transitions actor networks. Abstract: Using semantic network analysis, this paper examines how three types of Twitter influencers and the regular Twitter users frame “President Trump” in the discourses of Trade War. In addition to revealing the central words and word clusters adopted by the different categories of Twitter users, this paper also studies how central words co-evolved over time between three types of Twitter influencers and regular users by using coherency and time lag analysis. Overall, we discovered that three types of Twitter influencers all took a negative stance on illustrating the President Trump’s image, while the regular Twitter users demonstrated polarized attitudes toward it. The significant time lags between the highly co-evolved word pairs indicated complicated interactions between Twitter influencers and regular Twitter users. Collapse

Abstract: Empowered by the wisdom of crowds, innovation nowadays is increasingly relying on diverse individuals’ knowledge collaboration. Research on crowdsourcing and open innovation has demonstrated that through deliberate understanding and reflective thinking, members of the online crowd collectively manage their knowledge to generate innovative ideas. However, the semantic patterns of how online crowd’s collective reflection ultimately leads up to innovation remains unclear. Employing semantic network approach, this study analyzed a total of 1,116 posts contributed by online crowds responding to two organization-sponsored crowdsourcing open innovation challenges. Findings show that the semantic patterns of online crowds’ knowledge collaboration evolve from one phase to another in accordance with crowd members’ collective reflection on their diverse knowledge. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Rapid online adaptation to the new business requirements can improve innovation level and market competency of collaborative organizations. Complex and unstructured processes are provision e-services in collaborative networks through web service inter-connections, which unanticipated changes made it hard to manage them. In a cross-organizational domain, when partners deal with unexpected changes, the received requests are represented as complex theories, and business process adaptation will be more complicated in the occurrence of concept drifts. Rapid prediction and adaptation to new situations need concept drift detection and novel class prediction mechanism for the overall collaborative network processes in both data and control flows. In this article, a new approach to the online reflection of distributed rule concept drifts of collaborative network reference processes is introduced. The solution to the data-informed adaptation of unstructured process employed managing rule concept drifts and cross-organizational processes restructuring via the distributed model with minor updates. The method could react to the new events via an ensemble prediction mechanism. Its architecture has major components for monitoring, dynamic distributed rule reconfiguration, and partners side components. The paper suggests a service-oriented semantic network of distributed rules for e-services provision, substitution, and replacement via management of choreographed web-services. The approach has been validated and verified with real data belonging to the healthcare domain. The results prove the adaptation mechanism efficiency of the daily changes. Collapse

Abstract: Context is usually conceptualized as “external” to a theory or model and treated as something to be controlled or eliminated in empirical research. We depart from this tradition and conceptualize context as permeating processual phenomena. This move is possible because digital trace data are now increasingly available, providing rich and fine-grained data about processes mediated or enabled by digital technologies. This paper introduces a novel method for including fine-grained contextual information from digital trace data within the description of process (e.g., who, what, when, where, why). Adding contextual information can result in a very large number of fine-grained categories of events, which are usually considered undesirable. However, we argue that a large number of categories can make process data more informative for theorizing and that including contextual detail enriches the understanding of processes as they unfold. We demonstrate this by analyzing audit trail data of electronic medical records using ThreadNet, an open source software application developed for the qualitative visualization and analysis of process data. The distinctive contribution of our approach is the novel way in which we contextualize events and action in process data. Providing new, usable ways to incorporate context can help researchers ask new questions about the dynamics of processual phenomena. Collapse

Abstract: On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, the journal Electronic Markets offered an opportunity to reflect on research published in recent years in the journal and in Bled eConference proceedings. The present paper continues research from 2012 onward, following the research paper published on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Bled eConference. Altogether, titles, keywords and abstracts of 211 papers from Electronic Markets journal and 356 papers from Bled eConference proceedings were used in the research. Automatic content analysis was done using Leximancer software. The results provided a broad overview of concepts and themes covered in both the Electronic Markets journal and the Bled eConference proceedings. Results revealed the following overlapping themes: “information,” “service,” “business,” “online,” “social,” and “systems”. The four most important themes in Electronic Markets (“information,” “service,” “business,” and “online”) are also important and well covered in Bled eConference proceedings. In addition to the results of the analysis, the present paper also discusses future research challenges and the role of the Electronic Markets journal and the Bled eConference in bridging the gap between science and real-life challenges. Abstract: Topical keyphrase extraction is used to summarize large collections of text documents. However, traditional methods cannot properly reflect the intrinsic semantics and relationships of keyphrases because they rely on a simple term-frequency-based process. Consequently, these methods are not effective in obtaining significant contextual knowledge. To resolve this, we propose a topical keyphrase extraction method based on a hierarchical semantic network and multiple centrality network measures that together reflect the hierarchical semantics of keyphrases. We conduct experiments on real data to examine the practicality of the proposed method and to compare its performance with that of existing topical keyphrase extraction methods. The results confirm that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art topical keyphrase extraction methods in terms of the representativeness of the selected keyphrases for each topic. The proposed method can effectively reflect intrinsic keyphrase semantics and interrelationships. Collapse

Abstract: Social media have reconfigured the international relief landscape by creating discursive spaces for grassroots activism. In this study, I use semantic networks to systematically investigate the role of social media in mobilizing a new actor – diasporas – for providing humanitarian aid. I visualize the structure of conversations among Ukrainian diaspora communities to illuminate the social contexts for two sets of behaviors: political advocacy, the traditional pathway for diaspora engagement with their country of origin; and humanitarian relief, an emergent collective behavior in which grassroots actors supply aid to their homeland directly, bypassing institutional brokers such as international nonprofit organizations. Leveraging data from online discussions within ten diaspora communities on Facebook, I demonstrate how social media facilitate diasporic activism by reinforcing horizontal ties between benefactors and affected communities. This comparative case study contributes to a deeper understanding of diasporic involvement in relief in the age of social media. Collapse
