Abstract: The online referral reward program (ORRP) is a social marketing method by which firms reward existing users and encourage them to recommend products or services to their friends. Prior research has primarily focused on the impact of ORRP design on users' participation, however, the role of individuals' characteristics is unexplored. Based on regulatory focus theory and self-efficacy theory, this research proposes and investigates the effect of users' regulatory focus (promotion-focused vs. prevention-focused) on their referral intention and explores its mechanism and boundary condition. The results of three experiments show that compared to prevention-focused users, promotion-focused users have higher selfefficacy to complete the referral task; and thus, have higher referral intention. This effect will be attenuated when the tie strength between inviters and invitees is strong. The findings not only contribute to the research on ORRP and regulatory focus but also provide guidance for firms to optimize ORRPs. Collapse

Abstract: E-commerce platforms allow customers to post online reviews about their products, but many of these reviews remain non-voted by existing customers. Current literature on the perceived helpfulness of online reviews has overlooked the effect of these non-voted reviews. Additionally, current studies lack the cross-cultural perspective to help analyze the influence of cultural factors during an analysis of online reviews in an e-commerce platform. This study proposes a novel cross-cultural framework using online consumer reviews from a global e-commerce retailer to investigate these shortcomings. Our study has twofold contributions: firstly, we identified the significant predictors (such as review-title, review sentiments, star rating, social context, and temporal features) of the count of helpful votes received by online reviews – both voted and non-voted. Secondly, we identified a strong moderating effect of national culture on these predictors during the perception and evaluation of global consumers’ reviews. We also performed a quantile regression across the entire distribution of the count of helpful votes. Findings from our study will guide reviewers who publish helpful and comprehensive reviews. Additionally, customers and sellers from global e-commerce firms will learn to account for cross-cultural differences on the provided features to prevent the distortion of the information content of online reviews. Abstract: The importance of sustained physical activity in healthy aging is well established. To achieve sustained physical activity and exercise, related self-efficacy is important. Hence, solutions to promote self-efficacy for exercise among aged people are urgently needed. Digital wellness technologies provide a potential solution, but research on their potential to promote selfefficacy for exercise is scarce and more research is needed. To address this need, this study investigates how effective is the use of a physical activity application in promoting self-efficacy for exercise among aged people. Self-efficacy levels were compared between three different time points: before taking the application into use and after 4 and 12 months of use. The results suggest that physical activity application use can be effective in promoting self-efficacy for exercise among aged people as there was an improvement in most of the self-efficacy items as well as in total self-efficacy already after 4 months of use and this improvement was sustained after 12 months of use. Abstract: Conversational agents (CAs) increasingly permeate our lives and offer us assistance for a myriad of tasks. Despite promising measurable benefits, CA use remains below expectations. To complement prior technology-focused research, this study takes a usercentric perspective and explores an individual's characteristics and dispositions as a factor influencing CA use. In particular, we investigate how individuals' self-efficacy, i.e., their belief in their own skills and abilities, affects their decision to seek assistance from a CA. We present the research model and study design for a laboratory experiment. In the experiment, participants complete two tasks embedded in realistic scenarios including websites with integrated CAs -that they might use for assistance. Initial results confirm the influence of individuals' self-efficacy beliefs on their decision to use CAs. By taking a human-centric perspective and observing actual behavior, we expect to contribute to CA research by exploring a factor likely to drive CA use. Collapse

Abstract: Solopreneur digital ecosystems (SDE) have become increasingly prominent in recent years. SDEs provide solopreneurs with instruments to create their products or services and to run the business independently. Thus, they drive the unbundling of work from employment. As such, they are often linked to the economic growth in disadvantaged communities -help unemployed or less-educated individuals to generate income and access resources that would be impossible to reach otherwise. However, many solopreneurs lack knowledge about the opportunities fostered by SDEs. We take a proactive stance grounded in the design science research paradigm to address this problem. We design a Socio-Technical artifact that helps socially and economically marginalized people from developed countries to benefit from becoming solopreneurs. In this paper, we focus on grounding the research in an important class of problems, defining objectives for the solution, and discussing the design of the artifact, guided by meta-requirements derived from the literature. Abstract: Research has demonstrated that student help-seeking behaviors have a variety of positive influences in the classroom. However, the primary outcome of these studies is typically student grades and general selfefficacy. To make a contribution to the IS discipline, we expand this research with a more targeted and specific measure of self-efficacy that was created for IS students: creative self-efficacy (CreaSE) in the IS discipline. This allows us to relate specific help-seeking behaviors to CreaSE sub-constructs which, in turn, allows us to make more targeted recommendations to instructors in IS programs who want to improve the quality and retention of their students. Abstract: Online social games, played within social networks or games requiring social interaction with peers, are revo lutionizing the nature of video-games due to their social aspect and the ability of users to compare their per formance with their friends or people in their network. Social comparison features, such as leaderboards, individual scores, achievement badges and level maps, are commonly used in online games to enforce the social interaction of players. However, one of the biggest challenges that the social game industry is currently facing is the ability to increase user enjoyment, and keep its players engaged in the games. To probe more deeply into whether and how players’ continuance intention is influenced by social comparison processes, we combine two theoretical lenses: social comparison theory and self-efficacy theory. We conducted real-world data collection to measure the impact of social comparisons in player perceived enjoyment, online social gaming self-efficacy and game continuance. The results indicate that upward identification and downward contrast are the most influ ential comparison elements in game continuance. The results of these two comparisons have significant impli cations for both the theoretical application of social comparison in online settings and for the practical implications of future game design. Abstract: This paper examines the fact that a significant number of empirical studies in behavioral information systems (IS) theory research engage in confirmative testing of self-evident axiomatic theories without yielding highly relevant knowledge for the IS community. To measure how pervasive such testing of axiomatic theories is, we conducted a horizontal analysis using 666 hypotheses from 72 representative behavioral IS theories and discovered that more than 60% of the hypotheses could be regarded as axiomatic theory elements. To further investigate the pervasiveness of repetitive testing of axiomatic theories, we vertically analyzed 1,301 hypotheses from 148 articles in three theory categories: technology acceptance model, diffusion of innovation theory, and institutional theory. These analyses revealed that 68.1% of these hypotheses were axiomatic and that 74.6% of them were inherited from general truths beyond the IS domain. In order to shift the research emphasis toward enhancing the relevance of IS research outcomes without sacrificing methodological rigor, we propose four complementary IS research approaches: (1) identifying disconfirming boundary conditions, (2) measuring the relative importance of axiomatic causal factors, (3) measuring the stage of progression toward visionary goals when the nature of the axiomatic theory can be extended to future visions, and (4) engaging in the conceptual design of visionary axiomatic goals. We conclude with a discussion about why so many scholars devote substantial effort to reconfirming axiomatic theories and suggest avenues for more relevant research outcomes. Collapse

Abstract: Creativity is a critical trait of Information Systems (IS) employees. Organizations are keen to hire and develop employees who can solve unstructured business problems with IS solutions. However, self-efficacy research has shown that an employee's confidence in their ability to solve creative problems may be more important than their actual capability. To this end, IS professionals and students seek opportunities for experience in creative problem solving to improve their confidence. However, failure in performing tasks can lower confidence. Problem-solving based video games (psbVG) may be an alternative and risk-free proxy to direct experience. PsbVG require very creative thinking to problem solving and may help to generate confidence. Based on a theoretical model centered on self-efficacy theory and enhanced with flow theory, we performed a laboratory experiment designed to explore whether psbVG (and to what degree) may be a proxy for direct experience in developing greater self-efficacy.
