Abstract: The popular maxim holds that power corrupts, and research to date supports the view that power increases self-interested unethical behavior. However, we predict the opposite effect when unethical behavior, specifically lying, helps an individual self-promote: lower rather than higher power increases self-promotional lying. Drawing from compensatory consumption theory, we propose that this effect occurs because lower power people feel less esteemed in their organizations than do higher power people. To compensate for this need to view themselves as esteemed members of their organizations, lower power individuals are more likely to inflate their accomplishments. Evidence from four studies supports our predictions: compared with those with higher power, executives with lower power in their organizations were more likely to lie about their work achievements (Study 1, n = 230); graduate students with lower power in their Ph.D. studies were more likely to lie about their publication records (Study 2, n = 164); and employees with lower power were more likely to lie about having signed a business contract (Studies 3 and 4). Mediation analyses suggest that lower power increased lying because lower power individuals feel lower esteem in their organizations (Study 3, n = 562). Further supporting this mechanism, a self-affirmation intervention reduced the effect of lower power on self-promotional lying (Study 4, n = 536). These converging findings show that, when lies are self-promotional, lower power can be more corruptive than higher power. Collapse

Abstract: Understanding consumer information processing is fundamental. Previous studies investigated the effect of message framing and self-construal in green consumption using self-reported measures and obtaining contrasting results. This study used the eye-tracking method across two studies to examine the effect of promotion- vs. prevention-framed messages on green consumption. Study 1 confirms that promotion (vs. prevention)-framed information attracts more attention from independent (vs. interdependent) individuals. Moreover, temporal distance strengthens this matching effect (Study 2). Overall, this study uncovers consumers’ processing of messages with different regulatory frames from a visual attention perspective and offers valuable insights about the three-way interaction to promote green consumption. Abstract: This study reveals the two sides of social word of mouth (SWOM) in social commerce (s-commerce). Based on the stimulus–organism–response paradigm, this study explores the effects of SWOM quality characteristics as the environmental stimuli on individuals’ social pressure and behavioral responses. We collected data from 1,152 scommerce users and found that source credibility can strengthen members’ psychological reactance and social risk, which consequently resist positive SWOM intention and promote negative SWOM intention, whereas the impacts of information quality differ. Moreover, we investigated the moderation role of member characteristics on their internal feelings of social pressure and SWOM intentions. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the extensive studies about KM over the past four decades, the discipline still lacks a clear and practically comprehensive understanding of how KM can be integrated into enterprise systems. To a high degree, the issue is associated with the ambiguous assumptions taken by organizations about knowledge. Many of the assumptions of information systems theories about knowledge require revision, particularly how knowledge is managed. Conceptualizing knowledge as processed data and information has led contemporary design and implementation of enterprise systems to fail to capture the complexity of knowledge. In this article, we critically examine these views. We argue that the answer to the question as to how and to what extent enterprise systems can support KM, depends on the assumptions that organizations take towards the nature and sources of knowledge. To address this question, we introduce the concept of Knowledge Identity (KI) and a model of Enterprise Knowledge Integration. Collapse

Abstract: One culprit in the sharp increase in political polarization is social media use. We conduct two studies to explore this relationship. In Study 1, we explicate the mechanisms that link social media use to polarization-interpersonal political tension and political identity salience. We test this model with data from 2,820 Americans on two of the most popular platforms for political engagement: Facebook and Twitter. In Study 2, we drill into affordance use and ideological content on Facebook and Twitter to develop a theory of social media affordances and political polarization. Our theory explains the routes by which different ideological content are linked to a certain group of social media affordances and how this cultivates tension that activates political identities and thus polarization. We test our theory via a survey of 492 Facebook and Twitter users. We discuss the contributions and implications of our two studies for theory and practice. Collapse

Abstract: We study youth materialism as an antecedent of problematic smartphone dependency among adolescents. Based on Uses and Gratiﬁcations theory and the I-PACE framework, we consider process- and social-oriented smartphones as mediators in the relationship between youth materialism and problematic smartphone dependency. Using data from 463 French late adolescents (mean 16.8 years; 58 % female), known as digital natives, we demonstrate that paths diﬀer depending on gender. For girls, youth materialism is positively related to problematic smartphone dependency via social-oriented smartphone use, whereas this relationship is nonsigniﬁcant for boys. Moreover, youth materialism is positively related to problematic smartphone dependency via processoriented smartphone use for both boys and girls, but the relationship is stronger for boys than for girls. We discuss the implications of these results for business and social policies. Collapse

Abstract: This study explores how British South Asian parents perceive their children’s technology consumption through their collectivist lenses and interdependent values. The findings for this qualitative study indicate that second and third generation South Asian parents acknowledge the benefits of children’s technology use; but largely perceive technology as a disruptive agent, whereby children are becoming isolated and increasingly independent within the household. The analysis aims to understand how parents view their children’s relationship with others as a result of technology consumption. Accordingly, this paper proposes an extension of the Construal of self conceptualisation and contributes a Techno-construal matrix that establishes a dyadic connection between technology consumption and cultural values. Overall, the study reveals that children display less inter-reliance and conformance typically associated with collectivist cultures, resulting from their technology use. Consequently, parents interpret their children’s shift from interdependence to more independence as a disruptive and unsettling phenomenon within the household. Collapse

Abstract: Negotiation literature stresses the importance of mimicry in improving relational and economic outcomes. Yet, there is a dearth of work examining how culture influences the display and impact of mimicry in negotiations. In this research, we systematically coded behavioral mimicry among Chinese and Canadian dyadic, intracultural, video-taped negotiations. Using cultural theories of high/low context communication, and individualism/collectivism, we predicted and found that low-context, individualistic Canadian negotiators were more direct in their behavioral mimicry by exhibiting higher frequency of postural mimicry, than Chinese negotiators. In contrast, Chinese negotiators were more indirect in their displays of mimicry via longer durations of mirrored postures. Interestingly, gender moderated the effects of culture on the frequency and duration of mimicry. Mimicry led to higher joint gains, only when dyads did not attend to the indirect meanings of the mimicked behaviors. We discuss implications of behavioral mimicry in crosscultural negotiations. Abstract: With the rise of social media platforms and online communities, the impact of electronic word of mouth (eWOM) increasingly interests academics and practitioners. Psychological theories of consumer choice suggest that consumers' reliance on online reviews varies based on their heterogeneous individual traits and preferences. We propose that firms can infer consumer heterogeneities through product features consumers are interested in. The video game market provides us an ideal research context to investigate whether and how consumers in each product sub-category would respond to eWOM differently. Specifically, this research empirically examines the effect of eWOM on used video games' price decline and investigates the moderating role of two product features: games' violence level and social orientation. In general, we find that the extent of used video games’ price decline is positively and significantly associated with review volume, negativity, subjectivity, and readability. Furthermore, our results reveal interesting contrasts between games with different violence levels as well as games with different social orientation. We find that players of high-violence games react more negatively to review volume than players of low-violence games. Meanwhile, compared to users of single player games, users of socially interactive games react more negatively to review readability and negativity. We contribute to eWOM literature by theoretically emphasizing and justifying the important moderating role of individual predispositions based on the psychological choice model. The results suggest how review platforms and firms can tailor review recommendations and presentations across various products even within the same product market. Collapse

Abstract: Advances in authentication technology have led to a proliferation of biometric-based systems in the workplace. Although biometric technologies offer organizations a cost-effective method of increasing security, employees are often hesitant to permit use. The collection and storage of employee biometric data raises concerns about proper use of these intensely personal identifiers. This work draws from organizational privacy practices, electronic monitoring, procedural fairness, self-construal, and technology adoption theories. We investigate the effects of independent and interdependent self-construal on three newly developed dimensions of employee privacy concern related to organizational use of biometric technology. These dimensions include perceived accountability, perceived vulnerability, and perceived distrust toward the organization. We test the predictive power of our model using data from an organization deploying a new biometric system designed to track employee work assignments under the auspices of improving personnel safety. Results indicate that self-construal plays a significant role in the formulation of privacy concerns and both perceived accountability concerns and perceived vulnerability concerns are significant predictors of attitude toward using biometric technology in the workplace.
