Abstract: Digitalization is rapidly changing markets and workplaces with digital technologies intrinsically embedded in organizational processes. Inherent complexities in digital technologies require organizations and individuals to adjust and adapt to technologies and work practices to meet organizational goals. Adaptations enable continued use, avoiding IS non-adoption, but can be detrimental to efficiency and performance. The double-sided nature of adaptations motivates this research to examine the emergence of adaptations in digitized care processes in Telemedicine. Digital technologies are increasingly used in Telemedicine, blurring spatial and temporal boundaries of care and interactions. Adaptive Structuration Theory is used to analyze the adaptation mechanisms and the triggers for adaptations. A qualitative field study is conducted in two public hospitals in India. Findings show that users adapt technology, tasks, and roles and enact role multiplexities, resulting in new structures. The study contributes to the literature on changing work practices in Telemedicine that alter spatial organization of care and interactions. Collapse

Abstract: Online personal profile photos (PPPs) can serve as a source of impression formation and judgment about individuals. This study investigates how the emotionality expressed in a job candidate's online PPP on a professional social network (e.g., LinkedIn) affects a recruiter's perceptions of them. Drawing on social role theory and classifying job roles along agency (agentic) and communal dimensions, this paper proposes that job candidates whose emotional expression or inexpression in their online PPP is consistent with qualities associated with agentic and communal job roles are more likely to be perceived as competent and fit for the job role. Abstract: Planning is critical for negotiation success as it facilitates obtaining superior outcomes. However, little empirically is known about this topic. We argue that individual differences are important to understanding planning behavior because planning affords greater opportunities for individual differences to manifest compared to other phases of negotiation. We conducted a series of studies with the aim of understanding how the Big Five factors and gender predict information search and preference while planning. In Study 1, we examined information search behavior using the Mouselab paradigm. When the search space was large, agreeableness predicted persistence in search, and women spent significantly more time on the task, and looked for value creating and relationship related information to a greater extent than men (Study 1a). In a more constrained situation or with a smaller search space, few associations between individual differences and search behavior emerged (Studies 1b and 1c). In Study 2, we used a survey design to elicit preferences for information type. In this task, multiple personality factors predicted preferences. Conscientiousness and openness predicted preferences for value claiming information, and women preferred value creating information. Conscientiousness predicted preference for value claiming choice of information through the preference for value claiming information. How individual differences manifest in information search and preference in negotiation planning is a function of both task type and complexity. Collapse

Abstract: Research suggests that women negotiators tend to obtain worse outcomes than men; however, we argue this finding does not apply to all women. Integrating research on social hierarchies, gender in negotiations, and intersectional stereotype content, we develop a theoretical framework that explains the interactive effect of race and gender on offers and outcomes received in distributive negotiations. With a focus on Black and White women and men negotiators, we predicted that stereotypes related to their race and gender lead Black women negotiators to receive more favorable negotiation offers and outcomes than White women and Black men negotiators and this effect is explained by ascriptions of dominance and prestige, respectively. Results of three experimental studies involving diverse samples—online panel participants, individuals selling items on Craigslist, and MBA students—support these predictions. More specifically, we find that Black women negotiators are perceived as more dominant than White women negotiators, and Black women negotiators are ascribed greater prestige than Black men negotiators. These ascriptions allow Black women negotiators to receive more favorable negotiation offers and outcomes compared with White women and Black men. These findings highlight the importance of jointly considering the influence of race and gender in negotiations. Funding: This research was supported in part by funding offered to Dr. Sreedhari D. Abstract: Several organisations have introduced a new leadership role, the Chief Digital Officer (CDO), as a centralised role in their top management team (TMT), tasked with accelerating and coordinating their digital transformation. While previous research proposes a complementary, tight alignment between the CDO and the Chief Information Officer (CIO), role redundancies and the fight for recognition and resources also suggest an inherent tension. We provide insights into the CIO-CDO collaboration quality based on role, TMT cooperation, conflict theory, and a dyadic design approach of 11 CIO-CDO relationships with 33 expert interviews in two waves. Our findings indicate that the CIO-CDO relationship may not always be as complementary as proposed in the literature; instead, in the vast majority of our dyads, there is too much role conflict to achieve tight alignment, leading to separation behaviour between the roles. We identify the involvement in the introduction of the other role, the CIO demand-side orientation, and the CDO supply-side orientation as important contingency factors determining the quality of the CIO-CDO relationship. Finally, unless the CIO-CDO relationship resembles a perfect match, a unified Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO) role may better resolve the challenges we identify in our sample’s dyads. Our insights extend the understanding of the CIO-CDO relationship. Collapse

Abstract: Transitioning into motherhood can be stressful and resource-intensive, filled with numerous concerns and un certainties during pregnancy, such as biological changes and unforeseen outcomes. Expectant mothers, those lacking prior motherhood experience, frequently seek solace within online communities, utilizing them as sources of social support to navigate the complexities of the first-time motherhood experience and to facilitate the exploration of their life-role transition. Drawing on role theory, conservation of resources theory, social support research, and socialization literature, this study explores how online communities can provide social resources for expectant mothers to facilitate their role learning, and examines the antecedents and outcomes of role learning. Based on a two-wave survey of 185 expectant mothers (pregnant with their first child), the results show that online community resources (i.e., informational support, emotional support, and social companion ship) positively impact role learning (conceptualized as a higher-order factor, including role meaning, role competence, and role internalization), and role learning significantly enhances their subjective well-being. Moreover, role learning fully mediates the links between each type of social support and subjective wellbeing. A better understanding of the social support mechanisms involved in role learning may empower healthcare providers to leverage the capabilities of social media, thereby offering effective guidance to pregnant women confronting uncertainties in their transition to new life-roles. Abstract: In algorithmic work, algorithms execute operational and management tasks such as work allocation, task tracking and performance evaluation. Humans and algorithms interact with one another to accomplish work so that the algorithm takes on the role of a co-worker. Human–algorithm interactions are characterised by problematic issues such as absence of mutually co-constructed dialogue, lack of transparency regarding how algorithmic outputs are generated, and difficulty of over-riding algorithmic directive – conditions that create lack of clarity for the human worker. This article examines human–algorithm role interactions in algorithmic work. Drawing on the theoretical framing of organisational roles, we theorise on the algorithm as role sender and the human as the role taker. We explain how the algorithm is a multi-role sender with entangled roles, while the human as role taker experiences algorithm-driven role conflict and role ambiguity. Further, while the algorithm records all of the human's task actions, it is ignorant of the human's cognitive reactions – it undergoes what we conceptualise as ‘broken loop learning’. The empirical context of our study is algorithm-driven taxi driving (in the United States) exemplified by companies such as Uber. We draw from data that include interviews with 15 Uber drivers, a netnographic study of 1700 discussion threads among Uber drivers from two popular online forums, and analysis of Uber's web pages. Implications for IS scholarship, practice and policy are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Teleworkers who live and work in the same space are vulnerable to conflicts between personal life and work (LWC). The Covid-19 lockdowns increased the intensity and risk of LWC and changed telework conditions, confronting teleworkers with difficult personal situations and often ill-equipped telework environments. To develop a better understanding of the effects of different LWC dimensions (e.g., time, strain, behavior) on work exhaustion, job satisfaction, routine and innovative job performance and the role of the IT telework environment among teleworkers in the Covid-19 pandemic, a research model based on a sample of 249 teleworkers was developed and validated. The findings show that LWC has adverse effects on job outcomes and that the IT telework environment moderates these effects. The study contributes to the telework and role conflict literature by revealing the essential role of the IT telework environment and by differentiating between routine and innovative job performance among teleworkers. However, little is known about the routine use of these niche products. Based on the theory of involvement, we proposed a research model and conducted an online survey regarding Apple Pay to validate the hypotheses. Several insights were obtained through empirical analysis. Specifically, (1) routine use can be affected by product involvement, which in turn is positively influenced by ideal selfcongruence and social influence, and (2) the effects of ideal self-congruence and social influence on product involvement are moderated by gender. Abstract: Recently, data breaches, especially insider data breaches, have become increasingly common. However, there is a limited amount of research on the factors associated with the decrease in users' trust in response to these events. In this study, social role theory and socioemotional selectivity theory are applied to understand the role of age (younger and older), biological (male and female) and cultural (masculinity and femininity) gender, and the four dimensions of privacy concern-collection, secondary use, unauthorized access, and error-on initial trust and the corresponding decrease in trust associated with the three trust beliefs of ability, benevolence, and integrity. A scenario-based approach is used to focus on a case study of an insider breach. The findings also provide helpful insights into the comparative roles of trust builders (e.g., reputation and design) and trust crashers (e.g., privacy concerns) in the process of trust building and trust decrease in different demographics (e.g., older and younger, males and females) for overall trust and trusting beliefs.
