Abstract: In general, works on information system (IS) project success focus on either project success factors or project success criteria, neglecting the relationships (mechanisms) between these concepts. Accordingly, it is mainly unclear how success factors actually contribute to success criteria. We attempt to illuminate this black box by conducting semi-structured qualitative interviews with experienced IS project managers by applying Repertory Grid and Laddering. Our exploratory study yields numerous success mechanisms, revealing project-related motivation to be the central hub in the factors-criteria network. Factors preceding project-related motivation such as transparency, certainty, and management attention are described. Collapse

Abstract: With the increasing number of usage-based offerings, such as smartphone apps, consumers' usage processes are becoming increasingly relevant for scientific research. Thus, the concept of value-in-use is of particular importance. The paper presents a method for analyzing usage processes and capturing value-in-use. Based on a study of smartphone usage, the approach developed shows that valid value dimensions can be identified which characterize value-in-use. The proposed method proves to be a promising approach for value-in-use conceptualization. Collapse

Abstract: There is growing interest in the potential of Internet-enabled crowdsourcing platforms to leverage distributed collective intelligence for innovation purposes. Central to the promise of such platforms is the broad participation of self-selecting innovators. However, the factors affecting solver engagement with specific challenges remains only partially understood. This paper presents a study of the engagement of 15 contestants with 5 different challenges on InnoCentive. The results reveal the effects of a solver’s attitude, their assessment of risk, expected value, challenge characteristics, coping mechanisms and the characteristics of the intermediaries’ website on a solver’s engagement with specific challenges. The analysis reveals that the decision making of solvers can be characterized as an ‘attitude vs. risk’ calculus rather than a ‘cost vs. benefit’ calculus. Given these results, the paper concludes by discussing our conceptualization of the solver as a “Speculative Freelancer,” which we posit represents a unique emergent form of knowledge work. Collapse

Abstract: Culture can be defined as shared values and behavior patterns and is highly relevant for the development of socio-technical systems. Publications in this domain show substantial heterogeneity due to the variety of related problems and questions, as well as the focus on different types of culture. In this paper we develop a comprehensive framework for the design of culturally sensitive information systems that enables us to structure previous publications. Based on this framework, a literature review is conducted to investigate which meeting points of national culture and the elements of system development have thus far been addressed. We explore existing knowledge related to the different aspects of culturally sensitive design of information systems and identify areas where further research is needed in order to enhance corresponding design knowledge. Abstract: Effective knowledge management has been increasingly cited as critical for businesses to compete successfully. Knowledge acquisition/capture, the first step in knowledge management, continues to be a bottleneck and is exacerbated when experts are geographically distributed. Furthermore, knowledge from multiple experts is likely to generate inconsistent knowledge for a given problem domain. There is thus a compelling need to generate consensus by resolving inconsistencies and conflicts that may occur among experts during the process of knowledge acquisition. This process is more challenging when dealing with virtual teams of experts. This study addresses task-based or cognitive conflicts among experts. A key objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness of two cognitive techniques-the repertory grid (or RepGrid) and Delphi-in generating consensus among experts during the knowledge capture process. A field experiment with geographically distributed real-world network experts involving multiple rounds of interaction over an extended period of time was conducted. Findings from this research indicate that, in the short run, Delphi works better than the RepGrid in reducing conflict and generating consensus. However, the RepGrid technique appears to perform better in the long run. We find similar results for satisfaction with the process and outcome. Our findings also indicate that experts using the RepGrid technique elicited more knowledge as well as higher-quality knowledge than experts using the Delphi technique. To sum up, our study indicates that RepGrid is superior to Delphi, and therefore managers should seriously consider the use of RepGrid in capturing knowledge from multiple and distributed experts when dealing with complex real-world issues. Abstract: To understand the impact of social capital on knowledge integration and performance within digitally enabled teams, we studied 46 teams who had a history and a future working together. All three dimensions of their social capital (structural, relational, and cognitive) were measured prior to the team performing two tasks in a controlled setting, one face-to-face and the other through a lean digital network. Structural and cognitive capital were more important to knowledge integration when teams communicated through lean digital networks than when they communicated face-to-face; relational capital directly impacted knowledge integration equally, regardless of the communication media used by the team. Knowledge integration, in turn, impacted team decision quality, suggesting that social capital influences team performance in part by increasing a team's ability to integrate knowledge. These results suggest that team history may be necessary but not sufficient for teams to overcome the problems with the use of lean digital networks as a communication environment. However, team history may present a window of opportunity for social capital to develop, which in turn allows teams to perform just as well as in either communication environment. Collapse

Abstract: Personal Construct Theory finds its origins in the work of American psychologist George Kelly. Kelly, along with Maslow and Rogers, developed a school of psychology labelled the 'Phenomenology School' (he would have preferred the label 'Scientific School'). His theory, grounded in over 25 years of clinical practice, 1 is concerned with how humans construct mental models of the world. His belief was that, fundamentally, we are like naïve scientists forming hypothesis about how the world works and testing these with observed reality. When the hypotheses does not match observation we either reinterpret/rationalise the evidence or, if the differences are consistent, re-evaluate our 'construct systems'.
