Abstract: Eliciting information requirements from users is critical to timely and successful development of information systems. Despite its importance, however, users may not always be willing to cooperate during the requirements gathering process because sharing the required information may be perceived by them as detrimental to their self-interests. In the present research we investigate users' willingness to provide requirements using the Theory of Planned Behavior, ethics, and anticipated regret. We develop and test a model that draws from these three theories. Data were collected from a sample of 130 respondents and analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Results support our hypotheses that behavioral considerations, ethical considerations, and anticipated regret influence users' willingness to provide information requirements. We discuss theoretical and practical contributions of our findings and implications for future research. Collapse

Abstract: We explore why and how individuals adaptively and maladaptively respond to the threat of identity theft. We use protection motivation theory and regret theory, shedding light on how the individual’s reflection of a future negative event, which they did nothing to prevent, would influence their current behavior. Fear appeal is experimentally manipulated to test different models of high and low threat. By comparing the impact of anticipated regret and fear on individuals’ protection motivation, we find that discrete emotions of fear and anticipated regret behave differently in increasing adaptive and reducing maladaptive responses to identity theft. Specifically, whereas fear is only effective when threat is high, anticipated regret is effective in both high and low threat conditions. Also, we find that anticipated regret has the most potent effect on increasing adaptive coping responses in a low threat model. This means that anticipated regret could be used in situations where the threat is low rather than fear. This research provides empirical evidence of conditions under which fear and regret motivate personal security protection measures, enabling practitioners to promote identity theft protection more efficiently. Abstract: Containing skyrocketing health care costs is imperative. Toward that end, prescriptive analytics that analyzes health care data to recommend optimal decisions is both relevant and crucial. We develop a novel prescriptive analytics method to improve the cost effectiveness in clinical decision making (CDM), a critical health care dimension that can greatly benefit from analytics. Effective prescriptive analytics for CDM has to address its probabilistic, cost-sensitive, and investment-related characteristics simultaneously. Unlike existing methods that often overlook the investment-related characteristic, the proposed method accounts for all of these characteristics. Specifically, our method considers two sets of costs associated with clinical decisions—before and after an investment—in combination with the probabilities of cost changes due to the investment. In contrast, prevalent methods only emphasize one set of costs, before an investment. Furthermore, the proposed method involves both clinical and investment decisions, whereas existing methods ignore investment decisions. Empirical evaluations with two real-world clinical data sets indicate that the proposed method consistently and significantly outperforms several salient methods from previous research, thereby demonstrating the value of addressing the investment-related characteristic in efforts to improve CDM. Abstract: Large-scale group decision-making (LSGDM) deals with complex decision- making problems which involve a large number of decision makers (DMs). Such a complex scenario leads to uncertain contexts in which DMs elicit their knowledge using linguistic information that can be modelled using different representations. However, current processes for solving LSGDM problems commonly neglect a key concept in many real-world decision-making problems, such as DMs’ regret aversion psychological behavior. Therefore, this paper introduces a novel consensus based linguistic distribution LSGDM (CLDLSGDM) approach based on a statistical inference principle that considers DMs’ regret aversion psychological characteristics using regret theory and which aims at obtaining agreed solutions. Specifically, the CLDLSGDM approach applies the statistical inference principle to the consensual information obtained in the consensus process, in order to derive the weights of DMs and attributes using the consensus matrix and adjusted decision-making matrices to solve the decision-making problem. Afterwards, by using regret theory, the comprehensive perceived utility values of alternatives are derived and their ranking determined. Finally, a performance evaluation of public hospitals in China is given as an example in order to illustrate the implementation of the designed method. Abstract: Bitcoin is a well-established blockchain-based cryptocurrency that has attracted a great deal of attention from media and regulators alike. While millions of individuals invest in bitcoin, their motivations for doing so are less clear than with traditional investment decisions. We argue that the technical nature of bitcoin investments gives it unique characteristics and, consequently, that we lack a thorough understanding of how this affects the motivations behind bitcoin investment. We use a mixed method approach consisting of qualitative (n = 73) and quantitative (n = 150) studies and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to identify seven bitcoin-specific motivations (profit expectancy, ease of bitcoin acquisition, support of bitcoin ideology, investment skills, risk affinity, anticipated and experienced inaction regret) and how configurations of them explain bitcoin investment. The findings reveal, among others, that some individuals invest in bitcoin because they support the bitcoin ideology. Contrary to the traditional investment literature, profit expectancy is not a necessary condition to the extent that there is one empirical configuration of motivations that explains that individuals also invest in bitcoin even if they do not expect profits. The results disclose non-trivial investment motivation configurations and lay the groundwork for future studies of the role of cryptocurrencies in society. Collapse

Abstract: This study adopts the expectancy confirmation theory and regret theory to investigate the effects of external reference points on repurchase behaviors and explore how customers’ search effort influences satisfaction and regret. The model was tested using data from 268 customers of an online store. Partial least squares analysis results suggest that confirmation of expectation, search effort, and alternative attractiveness are predictors of regret, which in turn influences satisfaction and repurchase intention; confirmation of expectation and search effort also exhibited considerable positive effects on satisfaction, which in turn influenced repurchase intention. In addition, prior loyalty negatively moderates the relationship between satisfaction and repurchase intention. Collapse

Abstract: Social networking sites (SNSs) have become increasingly common in recent years, and their use has become integrated into the daily lives of millions of people across the world. Attracting new users and retaining existing ones are critical to the success of SNS providers. This study applies the push-pull-mooring model of the migration theory to improve our understanding of factors that influence the switching behavior of SNS users. Following the migration theory, this study empirically examines the three categories of antecedents for SNS switching intention: push (i.e., dissatisfaction and regret), pull (i.e., alternative attractiveness), and mooring (i.e., switching costs) factors. The results show that the three categories of factors had varying degrees of effects on switching intention. Additionally, the strong moderation effects of both pull and mooring factors help answer the question why switching does not necessarily occur when push factors are in effect. Managerial implications are provided. Collapse

Abstract: Consumer informedness plays a critical role in determining consumer choice in the presence of information technology deployed by competing firms in the marketplace. This paper develops a new theory of consumer informedness. Using data collected through a series of stated choice experiments in two different research contexts, we examine how consumer characteristics and observed behaviors moderate the influence of price and product informedness on consumer choice. The results indicate that different types of consumer informedness amplify different consumer behaviors in specific consumer segments. In particular, we found that price informedness is more influential among consumers in the commodity segment. They exhibit greater trading down behavior, which represents stronger preferences for choosing the products that provide the best price. In contrast, product informedness is more influential among consumers in the differentiated segment. This group exhibits greater trading out behavior, involving stronger preferences for choosing products that best suit their specific needs. These results suggest that firm information strategy should take into account consumers' characteristics, their past observed behaviors, and the impact of consumer informedness. We also discuss the theoretical contributions of this research and its broader implications for firm-level information strategy. Collapse

Abstract: This research attempts to understand user adoption of fashionable technologies (e.g., iPhone or iPad) and the influence of fashion waves on adopters of both fashionable and non-fashionable technologies. A research model was developed based on the regret theory. We tested the model by examining 20,122 customer reviews collected from Amazon.com. A theory-driven naïve Bayes classifier was developed to analyze the regret elements of customer reviews automatically. The data largely supported the research model. Specifically, we found that adopters of non-fashionable phones experience higher levels of regret and lower satisfaction during the fashion wave, i.e., when a new fashionable phone was released. In contrast, adopters of earlier editions of fashionable phones welcomed the new fashionable phone, displaying lower levels of regret and higher satisfaction during the fashion wave period. The findings have significant implications for information systems research and practices. Collapse

Abstract: This study focuses on the antecedents and consequences of Internet buyer regret in the overall purchasing process. We examine the roles that search effort, service-attribute evaluations, product-attribute evaluations and post-purchase price perceptions play in determining buyer regret and satisfaction in e-commerce. Furthermore, the study examines the consequences of regret and satisfaction in regard to purchasing intention. Survey data collected from 422 respondents were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with partial least squares (PLS-Graph 3.0) and support provided for the hypothesized links. These results show that greater search effort and lower evaluations of service, product and price lead to greater buyer regret and dissatisfaction; the consequences of regret include reduced satisfaction and less intention to repurchase. Based on the results, implications for online retailers, as well as suggestions for future research relating to Internet buyer regret, are discussed. Collapse
