Abstract: This paper addresses a thus-far neglected dimension in human-artificial intelligence (AI) augmentation: machine-induced reflections. By establishing a grounded theoretical-informed model of machine-induced reflection, we contribute to the ongoing discussion in information systems (IS) regarding AI and research on reflection theories. In our multistage study, physicians used a machine learning-based (ML) clinical decision support system (CDSS) to see if and how this interaction can stimulate reflective practice in the context of an X-ray diagnosis task. By analyzing verbal protocols, performance metrics, and survey data, we developed an integrative theoretical foundation to explain how ML-based systems can help stimulate reflective practice. Individuals engage in more critical or shallower modes depending on whether they perceive a conflict or agreement with these CDSS systems, which in turn leads to different levels of reflection depth. By uncovering the process of machine-induced reflections, we offer IS research a different perspective on how such AI-based systems can help individuals become more reflective, and consequently more effective, professionals. This perspective stands in stark contrast to the traditional, efficiency-focused view of MLbased decision support systems and also enriches theories on human-AI augmentation. Collapse

Abstract: Grounded on an experimental study with 18 participants, we derive 15 design principles for no-code AR authoring tools in an organizational setting. The study consists of two distinct treatments that aim to augment lightweight processes with AR. The outcomes are two interactive tutorials utilizing AR instructions. Following the no-code approach, the participants were empowered to create relevant AR content using a reduced interface and no need for advanced configurations or coding. The study thus combines two research streams with the aim of better understanding mechanisms for AR use in a professional context. As prior work has shown, despite the potential benefits, the adoption of AR authoring tools is limited because ramping up AR to productive use is heavily dependent on consulting and custom software solutions. Our novel approach bears the potential to broaden application domains and empower professionals to apply AR. Collapse

Abstract: This study evaluated the capabilities of ChatGPT, a conversational artificial intelligence (AI) agent, to generate quality answers to exam questions that are indistinguishable from human-generated text, normally requiring high-level cognitive abilities. This potential capacity is a major threat to academic integrity since ChatGPT may be used for academic misconduct. To determine its capabilities, we asked 15 faculty members to assess a total of ten answers (two each) to an actual IS exam question, of which students wrote five, and ChatGPT generated five. The study found that ChatGPT can generate answers of generally good quality that may pass as human-written text by examiners. The contributions of the study lay in providing empirical results in a novel research area, providing recommendations for teachers, and suggesting ways forward for research. Collapse

Abstract: The integration of digital technologies, such as Blockchain, in business operations has enabled companies to improve their sustainability efforts by creating more resource efficiency and sustainability. In particular, Blockchain's features of transparency, decentralization, and tamper resistance make it an interesting research subject for sustainable supply chain and operations management. This research investigates the sustainable design of Blockchain technology in the context of a natural resource (water) trading platform. By employing effectuation and affordance theory, this study aims to identify the sustainable affordances related to Blockchain multi-sided platforms and codify them into design principles. Abstract: In recent years, the topic of algorithmic management has received increasing attention in information systems (IS) research and beyond. As both emerging platform businesses and established companies rely on artificial intelligence and sophisticated software to automate tasks previously done by managers, important organizational, social, and ethical questions emerge. However, a cross-disciplinary approach to algorithmic management that brings together IS perspectives with other (sub-)disciplines such as macro-and micro-organizational behavior, business ethics, and digital sociology is missing, despite its usefulness for IS research. This article engages in cross-disciplinary agenda setting through an in-depth report of a professional development workshop (PDW) entitled "Algorithmic Management: Toward a Cross-Disciplinary Research Agenda" delivered at the 2021 Academy of Management Annual Meeting. Three leading experts (Mareike Möhlmann, Lindsey Cameron, and Laura Lamers) on the topic provide their insights on the current status of algorithmic management research, how their work contributes to this area, where the field is heading in the future, and what important questions should be answered going forward. These accounts are followed up by insights from the breakout group discussions at the PDW that provided further input. Overall, the experts and workshop participants emphasized that future research should examine both the desirable and undesirable outcomes of algorithmic management and should not shy away from posing ethical and normative questions. Abstract: EditorialWelcome to the second issue of Volume 32 of the Journal of Strategic Information Systems I am very pleased to introduce this 2nd Journal of Strategic Information Systems issue of 2023. It contains a series of thoughtprovoking articles.The 1st research article, "The influence of project initiators' person-to-person followership on project popularity in open source communities: The role of reach and importance," is by Qin Weng (University of Arkansas, Fayetteville) and Franck Soh (University of North Carolina at Greensboro). The authors write: Person-to-person (P2P) followership is an important aspect of major open source software (OSS) development platforms. In this age of social media platforms, P2P followership has significantly shaped the way users engage in OSS development by facilitating the establishment of connections among OSS users. Despite the prevalence of P2P followership, less is known about the impact of OSS project initiators' P2P followership nodes on their project popularity. This is a particularly important gap considering the low rate of OSS project success. We posit that OSS project initiators derive information and influence benefits from the quantity and connectivity of their P2P followership nodes … To test the hypotheses, we use a large panel dataset collected over 24 months from GitHub. The findings indicate that the quantity of OSS project initiators' P2P followership nodes including followers and followees has a positive effect on their project popularity. Moreover, such an effect is mostly dependent on the connectivity of the OSS project initiators' P2P followership nodes in such a way that highly connected P2P followership nodes do not impact influence benefits but they increase information benefits. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications.The 2nd research article, "Business-IT alignment as a coevolution process: An empirical study," is by Fabrizio Amarilli (Politecnico di Milano), Bart van den Hooff (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), and Mario van Vliet (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). The authors write:We provide detailed insight into the complex coevolution dynamics that shape the alignment process by analyzing how different mechanisms and factors are mutually related in complex networks of feedback loops. We combine insights from the literature on alignment as a (coevolution) process with literature on alignment as a state to identify the different components of the organization's socio-technical system that influence alignment, the relationships between these components, and the role that different factors play. In our empirical analysis (based on multiple case studies) we focus on the actual interplay between relevant factors. Using a causal loop diagramming approachbased on system dynamicswe analyze how these factors mutually influence each other through various feedback loops and thus shape the alignment process. We extend previous literature on the alignment process.The 3rd research article, "Can ICT enhance workplace inclusion? ICT-enabled workplace inclusion practices and a new agenda for inclusion research in information systems," is by Monideepa Tarafdar (University of Massachusetts Amherst), Irina Rets (The Open University) and Yang Hu (Lancaster University). The authors write: Workplace inclusion (WI) is a strategic concern for organizations, yet is challenging to achieve. We investigate how ICT use can enhance WI. Based on qualitative data from a leading UK recruitment organization, we conceptualize five ICT-enabled practices -Expanding, Orienting, Enculturating, Leading, and Reflecting. Each practice entails the use of ICT to enhance WI through a distinct set of organizational activities. We highlight the Reflecting practice as key in enhancing other practices, thus developing a framework for ICT-enabled WI that constitutes inter-related ICT-enabled practices. We contribute to the literature on the strategic role of ICT for organizational and social good, an area of priority and focus for the IS discipline.The 4th and final article is a viewpoint article. "Responsibly strategizing with the metaverse: Business implications and DEI opportunities and challenges," is authored by Marco Marabelli (Bentley University) and Sue Newell (University of Warwick). Abstract: Human facilitators face the challenge to structure and collect relevant insights from collaborative creative work sessions, which can suffer if they face a high workload. Hence, for effective value co-creation in organizational ideation we suggest an facilitation augmentation with a conversational agent (CA). CAs have the ability to support respective collaborative work by documenting and analyzing unstructured data. Following the design science research paradigm, and based on the literature about facilitation and human-AI collaboration, we derive design principles to develop a CA prototype that collects ideas from a group ideation session and displays them back in a structured (multi-modal) manner. We evaluate the CA by conducting four focus groups. Key findings show that the CA successfully distills and enriches information. Our study contributes to understanding the role of CA in augmenting facilitation and it provides guidance for practice on how to integrate these technologies in group meetings. Collapse

Abstract: Virtual influencers on social media are an intriguing phenomenon on the rise. They are computergenerated characters that attract a large number of followers and audiences who interact and engage with virtual influencers. Audience engagement with virtual influencers is an interesting phenomenon; yet little is known about the motivation and essence of such engagement. This research takes a qualitative approach of netnography to study audience engagement with virtual influencers. Content analysis on audience comments left on three virtual influencers' Instagram accounts (including Miquela, Noonoouri, and Guggimon) is conducted. Four major content themes emerge in audience comments: emotional attachment, source admiration, novelty, and expertise. We propose a conceptual model that postulates the impacts of these factors on engagement, moderated by the anthropomorphism of virtual influencers. This research reveals insights into drivers of audience engagement with virtual influencers, providing a theoretical model and practical implications. Collapse

Abstract: We conducted a field experiment to compare the effects of information systems (IS) supporting reflective disclosure and information democratization on the sustainability footprint of a routine organizational work practice, paper printing. We find that both sensemaking processes lead to employees reducing their printing; however, the processes are interchangeable and do not mutually reinforce each other’s effects. This finding contrasts a latent assumption of prior research about a co-dependence between reflective disclosure and infor­ mation democratization, and suggests organizations have a choice in how they can design and use IS to help employees make sense of different possibilities for more eco-efficient work. Abstract: This study examines worker voice behaviors in the microtask crowdsourcing work environment (CSWE) where voice channels are absent. Informed by employee voice research, this study adopts the revealed causal mapping method to analyze the detailed narratives of 60 workers from Amazon Mechanical Turk. Our data analysis shows that the crowdworkers did engage in voice behaviors, but their voices were not always heard, depending on recipients. The crowdworker voice was directed to three different recipients (worker community, job requester, and platform) and influenced by six antecedents (duty orientation, efficacy judgment, workgroup identification, anger/frustration, futility, and achievement orientation). Based on the findings, we propose a model of worker voice antecedents and moderators in the CSWE. This study extends employee voice research by presenting a moderator perspective in the CSWE. Moreover, our study provides a nuanced understanding of crowdworker voice behaviors from two major aspectsantecedent and recipientcontributing to crowdsourcing research. Collapse
