Abstract: The business analytics and strategic management literatures suggest that organizations should seek to exploit data as a key mechanism for competitive advantage. However, the rules of engagement are evolving, the regulatory landscape is becoming increasingly complex, and ex­ amples of poor outcomes are increasingly common. The board – in its role of setting and moni­ toring risk appetite – needs to be able to govern the risk/reward trade-off of the data asset. Contemporary data governance approaches are inadequate: they are overly rigid and risk ori­ ented, limited in scope to an organization’s self-interest rather than considering the broad set of stakeholders, and do not provide a platform for the board to manage this critical risk. This paper uses a unique set of informants – 41 board directors – to demonstrate that differences in board perspectives influence how organizations explore the secondary use of data. Furthermore, this paper identifies a set of relevant individual, organizational and environmental factors and pre­ sents empirically based configurations of these factors that lead organizations to consider (or neglect) the secondary use of data as a critical enabler of competitive advantage. Abstract: There has been a shift in the business world where many companies now consider their responsibilities to diverse stakeholders (such as employees, customers, suppliers, communities, and the environment) on par with that of shareholders. This trend bolsters expectations for companies to report on their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), i.e., on their environmentally and socially oriented claims and commitments. The IT industry (software and hardware) faces conflicting motivations to engage in CSR, and it is not clear how it fares compared to other industries. In this research project, we plan to leverage stakeholder theory to better understand how companies from this industry balance pressures from a dominant stakeholder (i.e., the employees, who have legitimacy and power) versus a dependent stakeholder (i.e., the environment, who has legitimacy and urgency). We seek to understand these stakeholders' influence on CSR initiatives, specifically within the IT industry. Collapse

Abstract: As brick-and-mortar retail increasingly disappears while online retail flourishes, the customer experience (CX) becomes a critical source of competitive advantage. Customers expect the same information, personalization, and availability in a brick-and-mortar store as they do online. While digital technology enables such CXs and enhances the advantage of the physical experience, brick-and-mortar retailers struggle with the complexity of these digital transformations. We analyze 38 cases of retailers implementing digital transformations to create digital CXs by conducting a qualitative comparative analysis. In eight expert interviews, we refine our understanding of CX in retail and discuss the validity and generalizability of the three resulting configurations: value chain innovation, seamless purchase experience, and personal experience. They provide actionable pathways to digital CX representing individual transformation initiatives. Since the configurations overlap strongly, we discuss the necessity to combine the three configurations to implement digital CX across all phases of the customer journey and business model. Collapse

Abstract: In the rapidly evolving digital era, firms need to innovate their business models (BMs) to thrive and benefit from new digital technologies. While digital BM innovation (DBMI) can create competitive advantage through differentiation, firms often struggle to create and extract value from digital technologies. In this paper, we analyze 41 cases of BM change and identify three configurations that lead to DBMI and two configurations that do not. These configurations illustrate the BM elements in which digital technologies are used for DBMI and explain how firms use digital technologies for strategic innovation. Combined with existing research on DBMI, this research provides a missing piece of the puzzle to connect specific technologies in the BM to implement a digital business strategy and undergo a digital transformation. For practical purposes, the findings suggest three alternative strategies for DBMI that identify which elements need to be changed together to achieve DBMI. Collapse

Abstract: In today's data-centric era, organizations increasingly aim to operate more data-driven and therefore engage in digital transformations toward becoming a data-driven organization (DDO). To govern such transformations, top managers develop digital transformation strategies (DTS) characterized by different organizational ambidexterity approaches. This study analyzes how such DTS influence the process and (intermediate) outcomes of organizations' digital transformations toward becoming a DDO by studying two organizations undertaking such DDO transformations using the concept of organizational ambidexterity as a theoretical lens. On this empirical basis, we find that DTS characterized by different organizational ambidexterity approaches lead to different transformation processes and (intermediate) outcomes. Thereby, this study contributes to existing academic literature in the field of DDOs and DTS, as such transformation journeys toward becoming a DDO have not been studied in its entirety yet. Furthermore, our paper offers practical guidance for top managers to develop and implement a DTS suitable for their organization. Collapse

Abstract: Literature has shown that business-information technology (IT) alignment can exert both positive and negative influences on organizational agility, giving rise to the IT alignment-agility paradox. To better understand this paradox at a more granular level, we conceptualize the sensing and responding dimensions of organizational agility as two independent constructs and suggest a nonlinear analytical approach. Based on configurational and contextual perspectives, this study investigates how intellectual and social alignment and organizational and environmental elements combine into multiple configurations to affect sensing and responding capabilities. Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) is used to analyze the survey data from 135 dyads of business and IT executives from the Chinese shipbuilding industry. Results show that different equifinal pathways can be used to achieve high sensing and responding capabilities, in which intellectual and social alignment play heterogeneous roles depending on the specific contexts. This study extends the ITenabled agility literature by deepening our understanding of the effects of multidimensional IT alignment on multidimensional organizational agility and providing new insights into the IT alignment-agility paradox. Abstract: This study offers fresh ontological insights by examining generative causality through the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) counterfactual lens, in conjunction with Critical Realism and the practice of retroduction. Specifically, it claims that Information Systems (IS) researchers could retroduce generative mechanisms by leveraging the QCA counterfactual approach to causation because retroduction is about conjecturing hypothetical mechanisms that would generate the outcome of interest in a counterfactual fashion. Drawing on an example of typological theorising, this study calls for a renewed effort in the use of retroduction in the study of IS phenomena. In addition, this study sheds new light on the overarching approach for conducting Critical Realist (case study) research. Abstract: Digital platforms and innovations have greatly improved the mechanisms whereby the resources needed to start a business can be obtained; yet many at the base of the pyramid still have limited access to them because they remain disconnected. While digital platforms can help to connect the possessors of resources with the entre­ preneurs who need them, the mediating processes that those who are not directly represented in such digital spaces need to undergo deserve further attention. This study builds on social identity theory and the identitybased view by considering identity as a relational and resource construct and discussing three identity media­ tion processes and strategies: connection-, familiarity-, and credibility-building. The evidence for this study was sourced from Rang De, India’s first digital micro credit platform. Understanding the identity mediation whereby disconnected borrowers seeking finance can access resources provides important insights to the emerging field of digital social innovation for business and development. Abstract: The phenomenon of Technostress (TS) -the stress experienced by end-users of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) -is often considered as a dark side of technology use. TS creators, factors that create TS, is a second-order construct with dimensions techno-overload, techno-invasion, techno-complexity, techno-insecurity, and techno-uncertainty. This study takes a holistic approach by proposing how the complex interactions among individual characteristics, IT features, and environmental factors influence employees' perceptions of TS creators. Based on past research, we include three personality traits, i.e., neuroticism, personal innovativeness in IT, and IT mindfulness for individual characteristics. Additionally, two technological features, presenteeism and anonymity are considered, while literacy facilitation, technical support provision, and social support are the environmental factors. Data will be collected using an online survey from full-time employees and analyzed using fuzzy sets qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Abstract: Wearable technology such as smartwatches have firmly established in the electronics market. Their sensors allow gathering biological signals and the derivation of rich insights about the user. Organizations would like to use such data from employees to promote well-being, safety or to monitor performance. However, extant research lacks findings to explain why and when employees might accept these devices and disclose data. Based on uses-and-gratifications theory we empirically investigate drivers and inhibitors of wearable usage in the workplace and in private settings depending of data sharing mode (voluntary vs. mandatory sharing with the employer). Using a mixed-methods approach with structural equation modelling and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) and a sample of 783 respondents we gain important insights into adoption intentions. Our research introduces new constructs to the literature (e.g., dehumanization risks) and provides important practical implications for the adoption of wearable technology in organizational settings.
