Abstract: Interorganizational information systems (IOIS) are valuable tools providing platforms for information flow enabling more efficient and reliable collaboration in digitalized supply chains. An IOIS is subject to influencing factors originating in the company and environment. Inspired by complex adaptive system theory, an agent-based simulation model is designed, exploring factors affecting the integration and efficiency of IOIS. These factors are derived from resource-based view and dynamic capabilities theory. The influence on information system deployment is assessed by merging these factors into exogenous, intercompany climate, and operational dimensions. First, the results indicate that product-specific factors have a greater influence than the environment when deploying an IOIS. Second, deliberate design of IC relationships should be considered during the development of an IOIS. Third, extensive information exchange between supply chain partners might be disadvantageous for IOIS utilization. Fourth, the advantages of IOIS can be lost when completely open systems are used. Abstract: Research indicates that Information Technology (IT) is an indispensable part of crisis management by helping managers respond to disruptive and unexpected events (Riemer et al., 2020;Sakurai & Chughtai, 2020). However, the impact of a crisis on IT is less clear. This research investigates the interplay of crisis response and IT transformation in the context of the 2020-2021 Covid-19 pandemic. We use punctuated equilibrium theory to interpret how a multi-billion-dollar Supply Chain Company (SupplyCo) responded to the Covid-19 crisis. Our case study illustrates how managers apply IT in crisis response and how crisis drives IT transformation. This research shows that IT functions as a safety net and shields companies and employees along three dimensions. The research offers recommendations for re-orienting IT and the workforce in response to a crisis. Collapse

Abstract: In the extant theoretical discourse on sociotechnical systems, the relationships between inputs and outputs of technologies are assumed to be knowable to human agents, occasionally ex ante and always ex post. Recently, a new breed of autonomous tools has emerged, which can independently learn and execute novel actions. The input–output relationships of these tools, however, are unknowable to human agents both ex ante and ex post. This calls for analysis of how humans experience the enactment of socio-material agency while interacting with autonomous tools. To this end, we conduct an exploratory, theory-building, comparative case study at one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers. We investigate how chip designers interact with two families of design technologies: one following a traditional designer-centric approach in which the designer knows what outputs particular inputs to the tools will generate and another relying on autonomous tools that continually surprise the user. Our inquiry reveals significant differences in designers’ experiences of using different tools. When using autonomous tools, designers’ experience of enacting socio-material agency becomes liminal, a state of continuous emergence, in which interactions with the tools are marked by ambiguity, and the design is moved forward along multiple design trajectories in accordance with a multifarious temporality. These insights require us to expand upon several dominant views on the enactment of socio-material agency and necessitate novel thinking on the role and impact of autonomous tools in future work systems as well as on how design and innovation proceeds under such conditions. Abstract: This paper draws on complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory to explore the transformation of an analog automation product platform as it was infused with extensive and deepening digital capacities over a 40-year period. Our case demonstrates how the deepening digitization of components and functions drives complexity by connecting the platform to multiple social and technical settings and producing new interactions and information exchanges. The increased connectivity and dynamism invited unexpected and significant architectural and organizational shifts that moved the platform toward an ecosystem-centered organizing logic. CAS theory and its notion of constrained generating procedures (CGPs) are used to analyze how new connections and interactions produced a multilevel and nonlinear change in the platform organization. We offer two main contributions. First, we provide a novel empirical analysis of how product platform digitization leads to phase transitions and show the mediating role of three mechanisms in this process treated as CGPs: interaction rules, design control, and stimuli-response variety. Second, we demonstrate the multilevel and recursive nature of digitally driven growth in physical product platforms. Collapse

Abstract: Fintech ecosystems (FE) are characterized by heterogeneous, non-linear, dynamic and complex network of agents that interact with each other to provide a wide array of financial products and services to end customers. With the rise of myriad complementary technologies, the complexity of Fintech ecosystems is increasing exponentially as new players are emerging and new connections are formed. Despite the widespread attention Fintech eco systems have attracted from both academia and practice, rather little is known about how such an ecosystem emerge. Toward addressing this knowledge gap, this research paper draws on complex adaptive systems (CASs) theory to examine the emergence of a global self-sustaining ecosystem: The “Fintech Valley” in Vizag, India. In doing so, our findings offer insights into the dynamics of FE emergence that is transforming the financial landscape globally, and may be helpful to practitioners who are looking to effect organization-wide cultural change and the ’compliant by design’ approach. Abstract: Service platforms emerge as a dominant strategy for generating innovations. In this paper we argue that leveraging innovations on service platforms requires a careful trade-off between stimulating and controlling generativity. In order to gain a richer understanding of this duality we distill literature on generativity across disciplines. Our review yields two mechanisms for controlling generativity, architectural and relational control. We argue that conceptualizing service platforms as complex adaptive systems allows us to explain the impacts of both control mechanisms on the platform’s generativity. In order to observe control impacts we motivate a longitudinal methodological perspective and present first results of an empirical study at a large multinational service platform vendor. The final results of this study are expected to contribute to extant literature on service platforms and complex adaptive systems, as well as to provide valuable insights for decision makers in the field. Abstract: The paper presents research on the possibility for the unintentional creation of an organizational crisis management process by self-organization via an online community. It analyzes organizational crisis management literature and posts from an online community, how crisis management actions were actualized through information technology (IT) platforms, and micro- and macro-level order-seeking behaviors.
