Abstract: Identity-as-a-service (IDaaS) is a cloud security service to which companies can outsource the identity and access management (IAM) functions that administer their employee’s access to organizational resources. Engaging with the information systems (IS) privacy literature, our qualitative analysis develops a framework for an organiza­ tional privacy calculus that informs French organizational consumers’ decisions to pursue IDaaS solutions. We collect data from employees of a multinational IDaaS provider operating in Europe but headquartered in the US. Abstract: This paper addresses a thus-far neglected dimension in human-artificial intelligence (AI) augmentation: machine-induced reflections. By establishing a grounded theoretical-informed model of machine-induced reflection, we contribute to the ongoing discussion in information systems (IS) regarding AI and research on reflection theories. In our multistage study, physicians used a machine learning-based (ML) clinical decision support system (CDSS) to see if and how this interaction can stimulate reflective practice in the context of an X-ray diagnosis task. By analyzing verbal protocols, performance metrics, and survey data, we developed an integrative theoretical foundation to explain how ML-based systems can help stimulate reflective practice. Individuals engage in more critical or shallower modes depending on whether they perceive a conflict or agreement with these CDSS systems, which in turn leads to different levels of reflection depth. By uncovering the process of machine-induced reflections, we offer IS research a different perspective on how such AI-based systems can help individuals become more reflective, and consequently more effective, professionals. This perspective stands in stark contrast to the traditional, efficiency-focused view of MLbased decision support systems and also enriches theories on human-AI augmentation. Collapse

Abstract: Anxiety, one of the most common mental illnesses among American adults, is often assessed via self-reported measures. While self-reported measures provide an efficient step in capturing health symptoms from patients’ point of view, by their mere nature self-reported measures provide only a narrow interpretation of health symptoms. Capturing eye movements unobtrusively during self-reports, when patients summarize their experience of anxiety by choosing a single option among a set of alternatives, can provide invaluable insight about patients’ information processing and decision behavior. Because anxiety impacts how we attended to information that we use to select options, the objective moment-to-moment eye-movement data can substantially enrich the information that is typically provided by patients as single scores representing their anxiety levels. Supporting this point of view, our results indicate that eye movements may serve as valuable objective information complementing the subjective self-reported anxiety measures to enable more effective assessment and treatment of anxiety. Abstract: Despite the increased focus on organizational security policies and programs, some employees continue to engage in maladaptive responses to security measures (i.e., behaviors other than those recommended, intended, or prescribed). To help shed light on insiders' adaptive and maladaptive responses to IS security measures, we conducted a case study of an organization at the forefront of security policy initiatives. Drawing on the beliefs-actions-outcomes (BAO) model to analyze our case data, we uncover a potentially nonvirtuous cycle consisting of security-related beliefs, actions, and outcomes, which we refer to as an "adversarial dance." Explaining our results, we describe a novel belief framework that identifies four security belief profiles and uncovers an underexplored outcome of IS security: insiders' lived security experiences. We find that individuals' unfavorable lived security experiences produce counterproductive security-related beliefs that, in turn, lead to maladaptive behaviors. Maladaptive behaviors create new potential for security risk, leading to increased organizational security measures to counter them. Thus, the adversarial dance continues, as the new security measures have the potential to reinforce counterproductive security-related beliefs about the importance and risk of IS security and lead to new maladaptive behaviors. To help situate our findings within the current security literature, we integrate the results with prior research based on extant theories. While this paper is not the first to suggest that security measures can elicit maladaptive behaviors, the emergent belief framework and expanded BAO model of IS security constitute an important contribution to the behavioral IS security literature.Puzant Balozian is an assistant professor of computer information systems at James Madison University. Abstract: Many firms use social media (SM) to solicit online investments. In this study, we examine the interaction between SM attributes and online-investment attributes to determine how this interaction shapes users’ investment decisions. Specifically, we investigate initial coin offerings (ICOs) as an application domain of distributed ledger technology for peer-to-peer investment. We use signaling theory to develop a context-specific explanation for how the interplay of persuasion signals found in SM and technology-enforced lockups shapes individuals’ ICO investment decisions. To evaluate this interplay, we conducted a 2 × 2 factorial experiment with 473 participants. The results show that when an investment does not require a technology-enforced lockup, persuasion signals encourage investments in ICOs; however, when an investment requires a technology-enforced lockup, persuasion signals do not affect investments in ICOs. Furthermore, our analyses suggest that combining a technology-enforced lockup and persuasion signals reduces the ICO’s plausibility. This is the first study to investigate how the willingness to invest in ICOs is influenced by the relationship between technology-enforced lockups and persuasion signals. The findings have practical implications for individuals attempting to make sound decisions on ICO investments, policymakers regulating online investments, and firms seeking to attract investors. Abstract: This study evaluated the capabilities of ChatGPT, a conversational artificial intelligence (AI) agent, to generate quality answers to exam questions that are indistinguishable from human-generated text, normally requiring high-level cognitive abilities. This potential capacity is a major threat to academic integrity since ChatGPT may be used for academic misconduct. To determine its capabilities, we asked 15 faculty members to assess a total of ten answers (two each) to an actual IS exam question, of which students wrote five, and ChatGPT generated five. The study found that ChatGPT can generate answers of generally good quality that may pass as human-written text by examiners. The contributions of the study lay in providing empirical results in a novel research area, providing recommendations for teachers, and suggesting ways forward for research. Collapse

Abstract: Design Science Research (DSR) projects are diverse along various dimensions (e.g., methodological reference approach, level of contribution, type of evaluation) and they produce a vast amount of information. This poses problems especially for less experienced design researchers who wish to write and publish DSR articles. Since DSR projects hardly fit the established structure of mainstream research articles in Information Systems, it is not entirely clear which aspects of the research project should be communicated and how to compile them. Existing guidance for a specific DSR article structure (Gregor and Hevner, 2013) is generic and has not been adapted yet to different types of DSR research projects. The purpose of the study at hand is to design a guide for design researchers that accommodates the diversity among DSR projects and clarifies what should be reported in which sequence. The concept of design patterns and various descriptive studies were used to design and evaluate the proposed guidance artefact. situation is problematic, as the contributions of DSR to the field of IS should advance the field and provide new opportunities for both design-oriented and behavioral research. However, due to a comparably small share of publications in high-impact outlets, the impact of DSR on IS research is lower than one would expect (vom Brocke et al., 2020;Gregor and Hevner, 2013).Having recognized the communication of DSR projects as a problem, various IS researchers have dedicated time and effort to develop support (e.g., vom Brocke and Maedche, 2019;Peffers et al., 2007;Avdiji and Winter, 2019;Cahenzli, 2022b;Cahenzli et al., 2021;Gregor et al., 2020;Gregor and Jones, 2007). To the best of our knowledge, the only publication focusing on the communication task of writing DSR articles is the MIS Quarterly article by Gregor and Hevner (2013), that proposes a reference structure for all types of DSR articles. This generic communication guidance has, however, not proven effective enough for design researchers, as the underlying problem appears to persist (Tremblay et al., 2018). The authors of the article at hand, design researchers themselves, perceive that the persistence of the "DSR writeup problem" is at least partially due to the diversity among DSR studies. Hence, a general reference structure may be either too restrictive for providing applicable support for the entire range of DSR projects, or too generic to be applicable to specific studies. Thus, this existing solution needs to be revisited.Our research objective is therefore to provide innovative support for design researchers in writing DSR articles. This support should both accommodate project diversity and be appropriate for writing articles for top-tier IS outlets. Aiming at providing a solution for a class of problems (i.e., a purposefully designed artifact), we apply the DSR methodology in our study. To ensure the validity of the proposed solution, the multi-grounded approach to DSR by Goldkuhl (2004) is applied. This means that artifact proposals should be grounded in theory, internally, and empirically. Consequently, several studies were conducted to ensure appropriate grounding of the artifact, including interviews, document analyses, and a survey.The article at hand reports these studies by presenting the background knowledge (including original research that provides the basis for the artifact design's theoretical grounding), the design approach, the proposed artifact, and its evaluation (internal and empirical grounding). 2 Background KnowledgeThis section provides an overview of the problem space (Maedche et al., 2019) and the current solution knowledge. Abstract: This paper reports on AI research into online misinformation pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic within the Canadian context. This is part of our longerterm goal, i.e., development of a machine-learning tool to assist social media platforms, online service providers and government agencies in identifying and responding to misinformation on social media. We report on predictive accuracies accomplished by applying a combination of technologies, including a custom-designed web-crawler, The Dark Crawler, the Posit toolkit, and four different machine-learning models based on Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machines, LibLinear and LibShortText. Overall, we found that Posit and LibShortText models showed higher levels of correlation to the pre-determined (manual and machine-driven) data classifications than the other machine-learning algorithms tested. We further argue that the harms associated with COVID-19 misinformatione.g., the social and economic damage, and the deaths and severe illnessesoutweigh the right to personal privacy and freedom of speech considerations.
