Abstract: Maturity models are essential tools to evaluate Industry 4.0 readiness. However, they have limitations in supporting organizational strategies over time and are insufficient to create company-specific Industry 4.0 roadmaps. This paper presents a research project to steer Industry 4.0 transformation in a leading paper pulp company listed on the Euronext Lisbon stock exchange. The contribution to the body of knowledge is a novel approach for Industry 4.0 adoption that extends the Balanced Scorecard with a fifth perspective and exposes the value of maturity model fragments: fractions of maturity models pertinent to a custom strategy. The proposed solution can support continuous improvement in long-term digital transformation strategies. Moreover, the lifecycle of maturity model fragments, namely, (1) dimensions and criteria elicitation, (2) personalization, and (3) strategic alignment, opens innovative prospects for maturity model design, tailorability, and practical relevance. Abstract: Enhancing an IS (Information System) with GIS (Geographic Information System) decision-making software creates, manipulates, compares, and analyzes high resolution, spatial-temporal data-events like sales and census data on digital maps that improve the customer value chain. When this robust GIS insight (i.e., WHO is involved, WHAT the consequences are, WHEN events occur, WHERE events occur, and perhaps WHY events occur) is fused with a rigorous theoretical foundation in GISc (Geospatial Information Sciences) and other disciplinary theory and knowledge, the IS becomes a powerful predictor of demand chain management challenges and opportunities related to Marketing, Sales and Service. The paper demonstrates these linkages for the benefit of IS practitioners interested in understanding the effects of such an IS enhancement. Research questionWith the wide application and success of GIS implementations supporting IS supply chain management (SCM) applications e.g., the pulp and paper industry in New Brunswick, Canada (Killham & Morrison 2018), this paper seeks to investigate the following question:• What benefits can GIS decision-making and GISc innovations create with a location intelligent IS demand chain management (DCM) approach?Other questions for future research might include: If subtle changes are detected through the GIS decisionmaking and GISc innovations for the DCM, do those create timely opportunities for pivots or corrections in the SCM management functions (see Figure 2) i.e., Purchasing, Manufacturing and Distribution?.A physical/geographic analog (i.e., a topographical hill - Figure 1) is used to visualize the concepts. The conceptual model views the IS "hill" (ISH) as a stratified hierarchy structure in the "landscape" of supply and demand. Abstract: In this article I argue that the quest to establish digital innovation as a research domain is hindered by three challenges. As digital innovation research we are too often: a) reifying the agency of digital innovation actors; b) developing explanations of digital innovation detached from the specifics of digital technology, and c) developing overly specific explanations of digital innovation. I begin by providing a brief overview of the recombination perspective and considering why this perspective holds great appeal in the digital age. I then engage with Henfridsson et al.'s (2018) value spaces framework as a platform for framing value creation and value capture in relation to recombination in digital innovation. Next, I push Henfridsson et al.'s arguments one step further to discuss them in relation to what I consider to be the key challenges for digital innovation research. Illustrating with some of my own recent projects, I suggest that in order to fully address these challenges we need to (1) develop explanations of digital innovation acknowledging the complexity of sociomaterial interaction in digital innovation; (2) develop explanations of digital innovation building on the specifics of digital technology, and (3) develop explanations of digital innovation based on an oscillation between the specific and the general. The article concludes by pointing to future challenges and developments for digital innovation research. Collapse

Abstract: Information systems (IS) are strategic in so far as they are used to realize strategic intent. Yet, while much has been said about aligning IS functionality with the strategic intent and how to organizationally implement strategically aligned systems, less is known of how to successfully implement strategic change associated with system use – a truly critical challenge within strategic IS implementation. Drawing on a strategy-as-practice perspective we address this gap by developing a multi-dimensional view of IS strategy, conceptualizing three key challenges in the IS strategy process, to explain how and why a paper mill, despite successfully implementing a strategic production management system, failed to produce intended strategic change. We call this outcome strategy blindness: organizational incapability to realize the strategic intent of implemented, available system capabilities. Using a longitudinal case study we investigate how cognitive rigidity of key actors and fixed, interrelated practices shaped the implementation of the new production system. We also identify core components and dynamics that constitute a richer multi-dimensional view of the IS strategy implementation (alignment) process. In particular, we identify three salient factors that contribute to strategy blindness – mistranslation of intent, flexibility of the IT artifact and cognitive entrenchment – and discuss how they affect strategic implementation processes. We conclude by discussing implications of our findings for IS strategy theory and practice, especially the contribution of strategy-as-practice to this stream of research. Collapse

Abstract: For companies and their employees, social media allows new ways to communicate with customers and colleagues. Vast amounts of information are being exchanged in social media. Information is a highly valuable asset, and therefore questions concerning information security become more and more important. Companies are becoming increasingly worried about information security in social media, but so far, this issue has not been studied. The present research closes this gap by studying the information security challenges social media represents for organizations. The research was conducted as a qualitative multiple case study for which information security managers from eleven public and private companies in one European country were interviewed. The study has three main findings. First, challenges arising from employees’ actions or unawareness in social media (especially reputation damage) seem to represent bigger threats to information security than threats caused by outside attacks. Second, the confusion of private and professional roles in social media represents an information security risk, and distinguishing between these roles becomes more difficult the higher an employee’s position in the company. Third, communication with employees and colleagues represents an information security challenge especially when communication is not steered by the company. Abstract: The open innovation model embraces the purposive flow of internal and external ideas as a foundation for innovation and network formation. While the open innovation paradigm has been successfully applied in high-tech settings, there is a lack of research on adopters of open innovation in other settings. We describe a case study conducted in a process industry setting, focusing on the LKAB mineral group as it makes a transition from a closed to a more open innovation context by adopting remote diagnostics technology. This process has resulted in the creation of new value networks. By tracing the reasoning behind the organizational transformation and studying the technology used to carry it through, we seek to explore the preconditions for open innovation and provide insight into the role of IT in the process. Our findings show that adoption of the open innovation model is grounded in developing organizational environments that are conducive to innovation, including expertise in creating a culture for knowledge sharing, building a trustful environment, and a resourceful use of IT. We illustrate the use of these techniques by studying the financial performance of companies from the pulp and paper industry. We also illustrate the use of visualization techniques for detecting multivariate outliers, and other patterns in financial performance data in the form of clusters, relationships, and trends. Abstract: While the business world has felt the impact of wireless mobile technology in many areas, valuation of mobile systems investments have remained largely uncovered. The initial hype for mobile technology has by now simmered down and business investors too, are demanding more concrete evidence before they are willing to put their money into mobile applications or services. The ability to assign value of mobile technology to business outputs is far more difficult than a simple cost/benefit analysis. Unlike the system development costs, there are no standard anticipated benefits, as these greatly depend on the business context. In this paper, we present the findings of a case study of the development of mobile applications in a paper producing company for supporting the complaint-handling process. The paper industry is highly influenced by the development of ICT, globalisation and fierce competition, and the success of the companies operating within this industry is likely to depend on their ability to utilise ICT in taking the best possible care of their business customers. A method for identifying the potential benefits of a mobile system is proposed, explained and examined in the context of the case study. Finally, the case study illustrates and highlights the potential benefits of the mobile system, which provides operational efficiency, functional effectiveness and aims to strengthen business customer relationships. Abstract: In this paper we argue that traditional information systems design and development is implicitly informed by a certain deliberative theory about the nature of purposeful activity. However, we examine other theories of activity that lead us to challenge this dominant model. This work-in-progress report reinterprets a number of existing case studies from the literature and provides a preliminary account of a new case study in order to demonstrate that successful operational systems in time-constrained environments often do not exhibit those characteristics that are the hallmarks of the deliberative approach. These systems are better discussed in terms of routines and situated action. Finally, we make some preliminary observations about the significance of this for Information Systems. Collapse
