Abstract: Drawing on optimal distinctiveness theory and Jellinek’s concept of the Normative Force of the Factual, we provide an alternative explanation for how the normality of gender imbalance in IT-driven start-ups (i.e., the fact that there are far more men than women) becomes normativity (what everyone expects to see), and eventually an imperative for those desiring to enter the field. We uncover the process used to pressure female founders of IT start-ups into being like the prototypical actor, usually male, and how failing to do so reduces audience support. This process is self-referential and self-enforcing and thus detached from efforts to reduce hurdles and obstacles for female founders. Our article provides recommendations on how to break this self-referential cycle. Collapse

Abstract: For traditional manufacturers, servitization and digitization are opening new business opportunities. Shifting from traditional business models of discrete sales to usage-oriented business models through product-service systems is a promising way to gain a competitive advantage. Based on a series of expert interviews, this study examines the opportunities and challenges of use-oriented business models in industrial settings. Opportunities include reaching specific customer segments more effectively while building lasting partnerships for product and service innovations. Challenges cover financial limitations and risks, internal barriers such as cultural resistance, or laying the legal foundation of a use-oriented business model. We contribute to research by taking a contemporary snapshot of multifaceted use-oriented business models in the industrial sector. Moreover, for practice, we provide real-world insights into practical applications to support decision-makers in this complex topic. Collapse

Abstract: This study explores the impact of modern patent pools—inter-organizational collaborative arrangements for promoting the adoption of technology standards—on the rate of follow-on innovations based on pooled technologies, the vertical structure of associated industries, and organizational capabilities of noncollaborating firms. On one hand, the formation of modern pools can boost follow-on innovation by lowering the search, negotiation, and licensing costs associated with pooled standards. On the other hand, modern pools may decrease the incentives to invest in follow-on innovations because of cannibalization risks and grant-back provisions. To the extent that modern pools succeed in establishing a dominant standard, their collaborative nature and their reliance on markets for technology can reduce technological uncertainty and appropriation hazards, hence triggering vertical disintegration in related industries. Moreover, by establishing a dominant standard, modern pools can effectively diminish the relative importance of integrative capabilities inside firms. Employing a combination of empirical strategies, I show that the formation of seven major modern patent pools has, on average, increased the rate of follow-on innovations based on the pooled standards by about 14%. Moreover, the results suggest that the establishment of modern pools can facilitate a shift toward vertical disintegration in associated industries where upstream technology-focused organizations would disproportionally contribute to the development of follow-on complementary technologies. The results also suggest that modern pools reduce the relative importance of integrative capabilities and provide a more advantageous position for specialized startups vis-à-vis diversifying entrants. I discuss the implications for literatures on organizational economics, organizational capabilities, business ecosystems, standards, and nascent industries. Collapse

Abstract: As digitization becomes pervasive, many organizations struggle to drive value from the growing number of IT-related opportunities. We show how the drivers of IT value creation can be framed as firm-wide commitments to a set of IT capabilities. On the basis of 20 published case studies, we identify a small set of IT decisions that organizations must make to use IT to successfully enhance their impact. We group these decisions into a framework of four commitments. Making these commitments helps organizations reinforce what really matters over time, which in turn helps focus the attention of their employees. We demonstrate, via a survey of 210 publicly traded firms, that firms which are more effective in making these four commitments have higher business impact from IT, which in turn correlates with higher financial performance. We suggest the construct of commitment is a step toward unifying the IT value literature and creating an overarching concept that brings together many of the important management practices identified in previous work. Abstract: A long-standing question for both IT research and management practice has been: how can IT be used in organizations to increase firm performance? IT researchers have provided many candidate capabilities that impact business and financial performance, including enterprise architecture, IT governance, IT metrics, top management engagement, IT-business alignment, and business and IT unit capabilities. However, based on a series of case studies, we propose that a limited number of enterprise commitments are key to maximizing business value from IT. We demonstrate, via a survey of 221 respondents in publicly traded firms, that these commitments are positively correlated to Business Impact from IT, which in turn correlates with higher financial performance. Abstract: A recent wave of Internet-related entrepreneurship focused on virtual communities. It produced User-Community-Driven Internet ventures (UCDI-ventures), characterized by (1) user-contributed content, (2) network effects, and (3), an interactive community. Whereas light pole examples such as YouTube, MySpace, or Facebook have received high capital market valuations, many other ventures have failed, making research on the phenomenon and related success drivers worthwhile. This paper integrates three general venture success drivers from the entrepreneurship literature and two specific UCDIventure related ones. Drawing on the case of the online video sharing community Clipfish in Germany, it demonstrates the relevance of the proposed UCDI-venture success drivers. Abstract: The growing interest in the use of electronic data interchange (EDI) to revolutionize the way in which business conducts trading activities leads to research questions concerning the characteristics of electronic partnerships that promote implementation success. The research model in this study shows that partnership attributes affect EDI implementation, which has three dimensions: integration, utilization, and diversity, and performance. Partnership attributes encompass partner trust, interdependence, and commitment. Results show that partner trust, interdependence, and commitment affect the extent to which companies undertake EDI integration and increase the percentage of EDI exchange and performance. This suggests that companies contemplating EDI should set up compatible business processes and a high-quality partner relationship for implementation and performance. Collapse
