Abstract: When using digital devices and services, individuals provide their personal data to organizations in exchange for gains in various domains of life. Organizations use these data to run technologies such as smart assistants, augmented reality, and robotics. Most often, these organizations seek to make a profit. Individuals can, however, also provide personal data to public databases that enable nonprofit organizations to promote social welfare if sufficient data are contributed. Reg ulators have therefore called for efficient ways to help the public collectively benefit from its own data. By implementing an online experiment among 1696 US citizens, we find that individuals would donate their data even when at risk of getting leaked. The willingness to provide personal data depends on the perceived risk level of a data leak but not on a realistic impact of the data on social welfare. Individuals are less willing to donate their data to the private industry than to academia or the government. Finally, individuals are not sensitive to whether the data are pro cessed by a human-supervised or a self-learning smart assistant. Collapse

Abstract: A key challenge faced by entrepreneurs is financing the venture for which equity crowdfunding presents an alternative with relatively low entry barriers. While it has recently been shown that perceived personality traits of the entrepreneur can impact crowdfunding success, so far, little is known about which perceived personality traits drive funding success in the context of sustainable ventures, which this study explores. To answer this question, through the lens of asymmetric information, we use quantitative regression analysis of U.S.-based equity crowdfunding projects. Overall, our preliminary results suggest an interaction between sustainability and the negatively perceived personality trait (neuroticism) on equity crowdfunding funding success. Further, we replicate recent findings on the role of negatively perceived personality traits in crowdfunding. This study contributes to our knowledge of the role of the entrepreneur's perceived personality and communication in successfully financing sustainable ventures via equity crowdfunding, bringing us closer to co-creating sustainable digital futures. Abstract: In the multi-attribute group decision-making (MAGDM) analysis, besides the weight of the expert, reliability is another important concept bound up with experts despite it receiving little attention. In addition, the risk attitude of decision-makers is particularly important to decision-making. Considering these two important factors simultaneously, the uncertain evidential reasoning (ER) MAGDM approach based on expert reliability and risk attitude is proposed. In this approach, the best worst method (BWM) is used to determine each attribute weight. The expert reliability is determined by integrating similarity measures between the assessments provided before and after group analysis and discussion (GAD) and optimizing the drawbacks of the reliability model of the original interval-value under global ignorance. The prospect function of assessment grades is introduced to rank alternatives by considering the risk attitude of decision-makers. Taking the risk assessment of public health emergencies as an example, the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed methods are analyzed. Collapse

Abstract: Trust is paramount to developing and maintaining long-term relationships in all stages of the customer lifecycle, including the repurchase stage. This research goes beyond the simple finding documented in the extant trust literature that the effect of trust will diminish. It sheds light on the role of institutional contexts and develops a nuanced understanding of the boundary conditions under which trust operates in the repurchase stage, where knowledge-based trust becomes more predominant. Drawing on a different theoretical tenet, prospect theory, we find that customers exhibit distinctively different transaction intentions in the two perceptual conditions of high and low trust in institutional contexts. Specifically, the nonlinear relationship between trust and repeat online transaction intention is inverted U-shaped curvilinear when trust in institutional contexts is high, but is U-shaped when trust in institutional contexts is low. With data collected from both e-commerce and mobile banking contexts using two different measures of institutional contexts, we employed a new and advanced latent moderated structural (LMS) equations approach for analysis and provided robust results. Our findings largely confirm the hypotheses and offer theoretical, methodological, and practical implications. Collapse

Abstract: To augment traditional monetization strategies, digital platform providers increasingly draw on gamblification (i.e., the use of gambling design elements). By means of gambling design elements (e.g., lottery tickets, scratch cards, loot boxes), platform providers do not only entertain users but also incentivize them to purchase digital products. Yet, despite the increasing prevalence of gamblified digital platforms, little is known about how gamblification influences user purchase behaviors. Drawing on prospect theory, we investigate gamblification in the form of loot box menu designs and the associated effects of uncertainty, loss experience and behavioral control on user purchase behavior. Specifically, we conducted a contest-based online experiment with 159 participants, finding that platform providers can profit from offering loot boxes with certain (vs. uncertain) rewards in loot box menus. Furthermore, this effect intensifies when participants previously experienced a loss and decreases when they perceive to have more control over the result. Thus, our findings provide theoretical and practical insights for a better understanding of gamblification in general and of loot box menu designs for enhancing digital business models in particular. Abstract: While automation in the workforce is widely studied, home automation, and the accompanied reservations about potential risks and privacy invasion, is deficiently examined and worthy of research attention. Seeking to understand the factors that aggravate the perceived risk of using smart home devices, this study identifies and examines the effects of three types of concerns on perceived use risk. These address the behaviors of the device and its manufacturer, as well the privacy concerns emerging from its use. The results of a survey of current users confirm that product and privacy concerns explain a large portion of the variance in perceived risk, and further suggest that privacy concerns are driven by the uncertainty about what data is collected by the device, and how that data is used and protected. The study makes initial but significant contributions to our understanding of the inhibitors affecting the adoption of these ubiquitous devices. Collapse

Abstract: Theories of decision-making have long been important foundations for information systems research and much of the information system is concerned with information processing for decision-making. The discipline of behavioral economics provides the dominant contemporary approach for understanding human decision-making. Therefore, it is logical that information systems research that involves decision-making should consider behavioral economics as a foundation or reference theory. Surprisingly, and despite calls for greater use of behavioral economics in information systems research, it seems that information systems has been slow to adopt contemporary behavioral economics as reference theory. This article reports a critical analysis of behavioral economics in all fields of information systems based on an intensive investigation of quality information systems research using bibliometric content analysis. The analysis shows that information systems researchers have a general understanding of behavioral economics, but their use of the theories has an ad hoc feel where only a narrow range of behavioral economic concepts and theories tend to form the foundation of information systems research. The factors constraining the adoption of behavioral economic theories in information systems are discussed and strategies for the use of this influential foundation theory are proposed. Guidance is provided on how behavioral economics could be used in various aspects of information systems. The article concludes with the view that behavioral economic reference theory has the potential to transform significant areas of information systems research. Collapse

Abstract: Dramatic increases in public Wi-Fi™ (hereafter referred to as Wi-Fi) availability have occurred over the last decade. Although Wi-Fi provides convenient network connectivity, it has significant security vulnerabilities. Despite widespread knowledge of potential vulnerabilities of public Wi-Fi, most people simply connect to it in public places. We investigated the individual calculus behind risk-taking behavior based on the theoretical foundations of risk taking behavior, technology threat avoidance theory, prospect theory, and self-determination theory. Using survey data collected from 1313 respondents in the United States, this study found that avoidance motivation, risk averting propensity, and intrinsic and extrinsic motivations affect intention to use public Wi-Fi. In addition, our results indicate that avoidance motivation is related to safeguard effectiveness, safeguard cost, and perceived threat, while risk averting propensity is associated with positive outcome history, age, gender, and education attainment. Abstract: Online forums sponsored by electronic networks of practice (ENPs) have become an important platform for technology-mediated knowledge exchange, yet relatively little is known about how ENP participants filter and evaluate the information they encounter on these forums. This study integrates perspectives from expectation confirmation theory, prospect theory, and neuroscience research to explore how ENP forum filtering judgments are influenced when expectations formed on the basis of contextual cues are confirmed or disconfirmed by the examination of solution quality. We summarize six different models of expectation confirmation explored in previous IS literature and report the results of a neuroimaging experiment using functional MRI (fMRI) that paired both positive and negative contextual cues with high-and low-quality solutions on a mock ENP forum interface. Results show that evaluation judgments are strongest in conditions where initial contextual cue judgments are confirmed by examination of solution quality except when the perceived expectation-experience gap is large, providing evidence for an assimilation-contrast model of expectation confirmation. We also found neural activation differences for expectation confirmation vs. disconfirmation and, consistent with prospect theory, differences in filtering behaviors with respect to unexpected gains vs. unexpected losses. has also been presented and recognized at several international information systems conferences.Thomas O. Abstract: In a longitudinal study of differences in framing an introduction of Grammarly, we find a gain framing to be more effective. Grammarly is an online spell-checking tool that can, for example, improve the text quality of students. We used the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology UTAUT to study framing effects on adoption behavior. In a survey experiment, we presented students with a description of Grammarly that was either framed towards potential gains or potential losses use would avoid. Contrary to prior findings in the context of IS security, we find a gain framing to be more effective. We discovered, however, that the framing was only effective after three months, which offers initial insights into the effects of framing in information systems and raises new questions. We plan to study this effect further in a follow-up study with a larger number of participants. Collapse
