Abstract: Data collection under local differential privacy (LDP) has been gradually on the stage. Compared with the implementation of LDP on the single attribute data collection, that on multi-dimensional data faces great challenges as follows: (1) Communication cost. Multivariate data collection needs to retain the correlations between attributes, which means that more complex privatization mechanisms will result in more communication costs. (2) Noise scale. More attributes have to share the privacy budget limited by data utility and privacy-preserving level, which means that less privacy budget can be allocated to each of them, resulting in more noise added to the data. In this work, we innovatively reverse the complex multi-dimensional attributes, i.e., the major negative factor that leads to the above difficulties, to act as a beneficial factor to improve the efficiency of privacy budget allocation, so as to realize a multi-dimensional data collection under LDP with high comprehensive performance. Specifically, we first present a Multivariate k-ary Randomized Response (kRR) mechanism, called Multi-kRR. It applies the RR directly to each attribute to reduce the communication cost. To deal with the impact of a large amount of noise, we propose a Markov-based dynamic privacy budget allocation mechanism Markov-kRR, which determines the present privacy budget (flipping probability) of an attribute related to the state of the previous attributes. Then, we fix the threshold of flipping times in Markov-kRR and propose an improved mechanism called MarkFixed-kRR, which can obtain more optimized utility by choosing the suitable threshold. Finally, extensive experiments demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed methods. Collapse

Abstract: Pay-for-performance (P4P) schemes are implemented to incentivize or penalize hospitals for their safe care­ giving. Given that health information technology (HIT) results in better healthcare outcomes, P4P schemes are expected to promote hospital HIT adoption. However, P4P schemes could also discourage hospitals from adopting HIT because they may take away resources initially allocated for HIT adoption. This paper is one of the first to empirically investigate the double-edged role of P4P schemes in HIT adoption. We leverage a natural experiment in the US healthcare system, which introduced P4P schemes in 2013. Our empirical analysis reveals an unintended side effect of P4P schemes that could potentially impede HIT adoption. We also find that P4P schemes have a negative spillover effect on nonparticipating hospitals in the same multihospital system (MHS) as participating hospitals, particularly for small nonparticipating hospitals. Our findings provide important impli­ cations for health policy design and MHS management. Collapse

Abstract: Knowledge workers increasingly rely on information and communication technologies (ICT) in their work. If not managed effectively, this shift can reduce workers’ wellbeing and performance. Accordingly, research on corporate digital responsibility (CDR) urges organizations to implement digital wellbeing initiatives to protect workers. In this research, we investigate which digital wellbeing initiatives are offered by organizations, expected by knowledge workers, and whether such initiatives might provide economic returns in the form of improved organizational attractiveness. Based on signaling theory and following a multi-method approach, we identify digital wellbeing initiatives from websites and social media posts of 25 technology companies and conduct semi-structured interviews with 10 students and young professionals. We discuss the conceptualization of digital wellbeing and the role of digital wellbeing for organizational attractiveness. Our findings provide a starting point for investigating business cases for CDR and can advance understanding and implementation of digital wellbeing both in research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a widespread disruption to the way that we work. One of its lasting consequences will be the ubiquity of remote work. The effective use of collaboration tools is therefore a critical factor for information systems (IS) research when design the workplaces of the future. We theorize that social presence and workplace ergonomics control are important predictors of perceived performance. Moreover, we investigate how different factors (i.e., collaboration tool efficacy, mode of work, and number of meetings) influence social presence. Using survey data (N = 389), we provide evidence that workplace ergonomics control and social presence are indeed important for perceived performance. Surprisingly, we observe that only collaborative platform efficacy has a significant impact on social presence, and that neither the number of meetings nor the modality were significant factors. Based upon these results, we derive implications for theory and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Discrimination is a pervasive aspect of modern society and human relations. Statistical discrimination theory suggests that profit-maximizing employers should use all the information about job candidates, including information about group membership (e.g., race or gender), to make accurate predictions. In contrast, research on heuristics in psychology suggests that using less information can be better. Drawing on research on heuristics, we show that even small amounts of inconsistency can make predictions using group membership less accurate than predictions that do not use this information. That is, whereas statistical discrimination theory implies that better predictions can be achieved by using all available information about an individual (including group characteristics that may be correlated with but do not cause performance), our model shows that using all available information only improves predictive accuracy under a very specific set of conditions, thus suggesting that statistical discrimination often results in worse predictions. By understanding when statistical discrimination improves or worsens predictions, our work cautions decision makers and uncovers paths toward reducing the occurrence of situations in which statistical discrimination benefits predictive accuracy, thus reducing its pervasiveness in society. Abstract: Employee behaviour is fundamental to corporate information security (InfoSec) capabilities across the phases of prevention, detection, and response. Unfortunately, despite over a decade of research on the topic, the human aspect of security remains the most vulnerable in many companies today, often rooted in employee disinterest. Two traditions within the InfoSec research that may contribute to this disconnect are 1) emphasis on extrinsic manipulation of behaviour versus cultivation of internalised commitment to organisational InfoSec and 2) emphasis on isolated activities over more integrated perspectives of security behaviour. Addressing these gaps, the current study examines end user InfoSec behaviour through a distinct internal motivational lens. Rooted in Self-Determination Theory, a research model is introduced that highlights workplace factors which drive end users’ internalised commitment to organisational InfoSec by fulfiling fundamental psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) within this context. Commitment, which captures internally regulated motivation to contribute to organisational InfoSec performance, is then positioned as a driver of intention to engage in various security behaviours. Overall, the results support the study’s hypotheses and underscore the important roles perceived behavioural control, IT competence, and user-IS department relations have on commitment to organisational InfoSec and resultant behavioural outcomes. Abstract: Organizations are beginning to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) agents as members of virtual teams to help manage information, coordinate team processes, and perform simple tasks. How will team members perceive these AI team members and will they be willing to work with them? We conducted a 2 x 2 x 2 lab experiment that manipulated the type of team member (human or AI), their performance (high or low), and the performance of other team members (high or low). AI team members were perceived to have higher ability and integrity but lower benevolence, which led to no differences in trustworthiness or willingness to work with them. However, the presence of an AI team member resulted in lower process satisfaction. When the AI team member performed well, participants perceived less conflict compared to a human team member with the same performance, but there were no differences in perceived conflict when it performed poorly. There were no other interactions with performance, indicating that the AI team member was judged similarly to humans, irrespective of variations in performance; there was no evidence of algorithm aversion. Our research suggests that AI team members are likely to be accepted into teams, meaning that many old collaboration research questions may need to be reexamined to consider AI team members. Abstract: The amount of research related to financial technologies (fintech) has grown rapidly since these modalities have been implemented. A review of this literature base will help identify the topics that have been explored and identify topics for further research. This research project collects, synthesizes, and analyzes both the research strategies (i.e., methodologies) and content (e.g., topics, focus, categories) of the literature, and then discusses an agenda for future research efforts. We searched for fintech research published in the last 20 years and analyzed 146 articles published in Finance and 70 articles published in Information Systems (IS) during this period in their respective A*, A, and B journals in the 2019 Australian Business Deans Council list. We found an increasing level of activity during the most recent 6-year period and a biased distribution of fintech articles focused on exploratory methodologies. We also found several research strategies that were either underrepresented or absent from the pool of fintech research and identified several subject areas that need further exploration. We also created four fintech topic categories to organize and classify this diverse research stream. Collapse

Abstract: We investigate how negative performance feedback affects board diversity, which is instrumental in shaping a firm’s strategic change. When a firm underperforms compared with its aspiration, its board is motivated to promptly address the underperformance. The board needs to not only help search for strategic alternatives but also quickly build consensus around its strategic reorientation. These two motivations lead the board to value two dimensions of diversity among its members differently. On the one hand, to understand the problem of underperformance and find a solution, the board is motivated to seek new expertise, avoiding redundancy in the pool of expertise already represented in the boardroom. This results in a higher level of diversity in director expertise. On the other hand, the urgent need to build consensus prompts the board to value trust and solidarity and to avoid potential conflict among directors. Because people perceive others with similar ascriptive backgrounds as trustworthy, changes in the board of an underperforming firm are likely to yield a lower level of diversity in its members’ ascriptive backgrounds. These changes in board are affected by the committee chairs of the board whose power and influence are significant in the boardroom. Analyses of the boards of 733 U.S. listed manufacturing firms show that when a firm underperforms compared with its aspirations, it increases the board expertise diversity, but decreases the board ascriptive diversity. When chairs on the board are gender or racial minorities, the negative association between underperformance and the board ascriptive diversity is weakened.
