Abstract: AI-based systems are increasingly deployed on organizational tasks, such as personnel selection decisions. As existing research indicates that applicants generally react negatively to the use of AI in personnel selection, this study examines how organizations can mitigate adverse reactions to fully exploit the benefits of AI. To obtain robust results, we recruited an online sample of German participants (N = 1,852) and presented them with various selection scenarios. Using a between-subject design, the process stage (preselection vs. interview) and the degree of process automation (augmented vs. automated) were manipulated. By employing a multidimensional conceptualization of transparency, we show that disclosure and accuracy positively impact procedural justice perceptions, a strong predictor of process quality assessment. This relationship is robust across selection contexts. Results indicate that applicants prefer AI for pre-selection and as human decision support, thus offering overall insights into design choices for AI in selection, optimizing applicant reactions. Abstract: Organizations increasingly integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into their selection procedures, for example, to analyze selection interviews. However, prior research indicates that applicants react negatively to an AI as decision agent in selection interviews. Only few studies have addressed possible mechanisms to mitigate negative effects of AI usage on applicant reactions, calling for increased research attention. The present experimental study (N=180) is among the first to test whether AI certification has the potential to positively influence people's fairness perceptions of AI usage. Consistent with previous research, our results show that people are less attracted to an organization that conducts AI-based (compared to human-based) selection interviews, partially due to lower procedural fairness perceptions. With regards to AI certification, we highlight the crucial role of the certification label's perceived trustworthiness in shaping applicants' procedural fairness perceptions and organizational attraction. Future research should investigate factors that enhance the trustworthiness of an AI certification label. Collapse

Abstract: Technological advancements in recent years have enabled the spread of automated decision-making (ADM) systems. Social scoring systems are a specific instance of ADM system, using behavioral scores to encourage pro-social behaviors. Building on a survey following an experimental study, we present two structural equation models to determine the impacts of different levels of transparency on the perceived legitimacy of scoring systems, as well as on people's intention to comply with the system. The models are built on well-established theories highlighting procedural justice and outcome favorabilities as key determinating factors. Our results suggest that the determinants of perceived legitimacy are strongly shaped by the level of transparency. However, transparency elevates subjective privacy harms. Our findings add to the ongoing debate on the transparency of ADM systems, by identifying a trade-off between the elimination of outcome favorabilities in determining perceptions of legitimacy, and increased subjective privacy harms, weakening people's intention to comply. Abstract: The widespread use of technology in the workplace has led to an increase in cyberdeviance, where employees deliberately violate organizational norms when using IT resources. Drawing on literature on technological entitlement and organizational justice, this study explores the relationship between cyberdeviance, technological entitlement, and organizational justice. We propose that technological entitlement is a personality trait of employees who are more likely to engage in cyberdeviance and use organizational justice as a justification for their behavior. Abstract: Discriminatory pricing practices have raised consumers' negative reactions. This study investigates how AI agent's presence and the use of explanations impact consumers' acceptance of discriminatory pricing. A scenario-based experiment revealed that AI agent's presence negatively moderates the negative relationship between offer unfavorability and offer acceptance, which is mediated by perceived justice and invasion of privacy. Moreover, this research indicated that for unfavored price, environmentbased explanation is more effective than user-based explanation and the positive effect of AI agent's presence on offer acceptance is more pronounced when providing user-based explanations. This study contributes to price management literature and AI decision literature by illustrating how the AI agent's presence asymmetrically shapes consumers' perceptions of offer outcomes, enriching our understanding of consumer responses to AI. The findings have implications for firms managing discriminatory pricing, offering insights into optimal AI agents and explanation utilization for enhancing customer experience and business performance. Abstract: The increasing use of AI decision systems in recruitment processes has created challenges, including potential resistance from job applicants. To address this issue, drawing on organizational justice theory, we identify dimensions of AI explanations in the employment context and examine their impact on job applicants' perceptions of organizational justice. We conducted an experiment to understand applicants' reactions to AI versus HR managers without explanations and examined the impact of AI explanations on organizational justice perceptions and acceptance intention. Our findings show that without explanation, AI is perceived as lower organizational just and acceptance intention compared to HR managers. Organizational justice mediates the effects between outcome/process explanations of AI on acceptance intention. However, outcome explanations have a stronger impact compared to process explanations. Our study contributes to understanding explanation structures for AI-based recruitment and offers practical implications for developing explanations that improve the perceived justice of AI recruitment systems. Abstract: Employees' nonwork use of information technology (IT), or cyberslacking, is of growing concern due to its erosion of job performance and other negative organizational consequences. Research on cyberslacking antecedents has drawn on diverse theoretical perspectives, resulting in the lack of a cohesive explanation of cyberslacking. Further, prior studies have generally overlooked IT-specific variables. To address cyberslacking problems in organizations, as well as research gaps in the literature, we used a combination of a literature-based approach and a qualitative inquiry to develop a model of cyberslacking that includes a 2×2 typology of antecedents. The proposed model was tested and supported in a three-wave field study of 395 employees in a U.S. Fortune-100 organization. This study organizes antecedents from diverse research streams and validates their relative impact on cyberslacking, thus providing a cohesive theoretical explanation of cyberslacking. This study also incorporates contextualization (i.e., IT-specific factors) into theory development and enriches the IS literature by examining the nonwork aspects of IT use and their negative consequences to organizations. In addition, the results provide practitioners with insights into the nonwork use of IT in organizations, particularly regarding how they can take organizational action to mitigate cyberslacking and maintain employee productivity. Abstract: Data breaches pose severe risks to companies. In fact, those incidents generate adverse effects on the customer relationship and companies’ financial performance. To this end, prior research has demonstrated that a dedicated response strategy to a data breach can mitigate these consequences. Nevertheless, contemporary research focuses on one-way response communication with the affected customer. Customers receive notification of the incident and are offered a pre-determined solution but are not actively integrated into the data breach response process. In turn, informed through service failure literature, we argue that a value co-creation perspective of data breach response strategies holds merit. We identify six distinct research avenues for future data breach research through a hermeneutic literature review of salient co-recovery literature. Our research represents a novelty to the field of data breach response strategies. We synthesize the service failure, data breach, and co-creation streams of literature and highlight research shortcomings and opportunities. Collapse

Abstract: As data breaches continue to rise, customers exhibit heterogeneous expectations regarding the company's response. Universal responses can show backfire effects since they fail to meet the expectations. Thus, the challenge arises that customer expectations must be known to mitigate the consequences while time is limited to publish the data breach announcement. By drawing on service failure, data breach, and justice research, we theorize that customer involvement provides a viable approach to this challenge. We argue that active customer involvement allows customers to formulate their expectations. Thus, enabling companies to leverage these expectations to provide tailored data breach responses. We test our hypotheses in a digital experiment (n=304). Our results provide a first indication that active customer involvement in a data breach drives positive group value and negative self-interest effects. We contribute to the data breach literature by revealing that customer involvement constitutes a suitable mechanism for identifying customer expectations. Collapse
