Abstract: In the aftermath of natural disasters, borrowers seeking credit from traditional sources, such as banks, may encounter higher interest rates than in pre-disaster periods. We examine the lending behavior of peer-topeer (P2P) platforms in the wake of disasters. Since P2P platforms involve individual investors in making lending decisions, they accommodate both profit motives and empathetic responses. Empirical evidence from psychology suggests that empathy can lead to prosocial behavior. Consistent with this assertion, we find that loans affected by natural disasters have lower interest rates than comparable loans not issued in the wake of disasters. Our study finds that lenders are involved in a prosocial behavior and are ready to give away some part of their interest income to help the communities in need. Collapse

Abstract: Marginalized communities globally encounter grand challenges such as lack of access to education, healthcare, and sustained livelihoods. Several initiatives to address these complex, global problems have resulted in fragmented solutions. Recognizing this, there have been several calls for the study of responsible innovation (RI) to address grand challenges. Digital platforms such as AirBnB, Uber and so forth have now become commonplace and are known to generate economic value but also face criticism for being exploitative and exclusive. Only a handful of studies show how similar platforms can innovate responsibly to serve marginalized communities by generating simultaneous economic and social value. To address this gap, our study examines the cases of two platforms that orchestrated ecosystems consisting of individuals from marginalized communities, government agencies, and other entities to provide physical, digital and societal solutions based on principles of RI. We contribute to the RI and IS literatures to show how RI solutions can be fostered through digital platforms to address grand challenges. The article provides empirical evidence of all four dimensions of the RI framework—anticipation, reflexivity, inclusion, and responsiveness - and their operationalization through digital platforms. This research lays the foundation for future studies at the intersection of RI and digital platforms literature. The study also provides practice insights on developing digital platform solutions for marginalized communities to address grand challenges and is useful to policymakers to formulate appropriate interventions. It pushes the theoretical and practice boundaries of our understanding of RI and digital platforms. Collapse

Abstract: There is a wide gender gap in developing countries due to a range of cultural, economic and political barriers. This is even more accentuated in post conflict economies in times of crisis. Smartphones and mobile applications can help to narrow this gap. The economic and non-economic challenges facing women entrepreneurs and the role of smartphone innovation in overcoming these challenges and developing strong marketing strategies were investigated. We drew on the 5 M model to investigate how mobile applications can support women entrepreneurs. We conducted thirty interviews with women entrepreneurs in Iraq. The findings show that mobile applications provided these entrepreneurs with innovative ways to overcome many of the challenges they face in relation to running a business. The research provides theoretical contributions by developing an integrated, multilevel analytical model on women in entrepreneurship based on extending the 5 M model with new technology-related elements. Practical, policy and managerial implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Facing ever-looming climate change, studying the drivers for individuals ' Information Systems (IS) Use to reduce environmental harm gains momentum. While extant research on the antecedents of sustainable IS Use has focused on specific theories, interventions, contexts, and technologies, a holistic understanding has become increasingly elusive, with a synthesis remaining absent. We employ a systematic literature review methodology to shed light on the driving antecedents for sustainable IS Use among individual consumers. Our results build on findings of 29 empirical studies drawn from 598 articles retrieved from our premier outlets and a forward/backward search. The analysis reveals six salient complementary antecedents: Relief, Empowerment, Default, User-centricity, Salience, and Encouragement. We recommend considering these concepts when developing, deploying, promoting, or regulating digital technologies to mitigate individual consumers' emissions. Along with memorable and implementable concepts, our theoretical framework offers a novel conceptualization and four promising avenues for researchers on sustainable IS Use. Collapse

Abstract: To counteract global warming, individuals must adopt pro-environmental behaviors, but many prefer their established behaviors because of inertia. This paper analyzes how we can address the inertia that hinders pro-environmental behavior using digital nudges. Our structured literature review finds 19 out of 20 studies that show how decision information nudges like feedback overcome behavioral inertia. Most of the habitual patterns we identified could be attributed to private household behaviors like inefficient energy or water consumption. We contribute a framework for how the three dimensions of inertia-behavioral, cognitive, and affective inertia-are best each addressed using informational, structural, and assistance nudges, respectively. Abstract: Recent achievements of artificial intelligence (AI) have caused organizations to increasingly bring AI capabilities into their core business processes. Such AI-supported business processes often result in human-AI hybrid systems, which consist of an AI system, which performs most of the execution, and humans, who monitor this execution and occasionally provide additional inputs and overrides. Using sales data from Walmart, we conduct an online study to investigate if human supervision can improve upon state-of-the-art AI forecasts. Furthermore, we analyze the perceptions and behavioral intentions of the human participants over time. We find that human interventions consistently lead to less accurate forecasts and that participants initially underestimate the AI system's accuracy and overestimate their own potential to improve upon AI forecasts. However, perceptions quickly shift over the course of the study, causing the participants to perceive the AI system increasingly favorably, which also leads to behavioral changes and better hybrid system performance. Abstract: In order to ensure energy affordability, we propose a design-oriented behavioral research study with the aim of helping low-income tenants to develop an efficient energy behavior by increasing their energy self-efficacy. We propose to compare different digital interventions in field tests to understand, in an unfiltered way, what helps low-income tenants to be able to reduce their energy costs. We thereby contribute towards understanding how the vulnerable group of low-income tenants with their limitations and needs regarding their energy consumption behavior can be effectively supported digitally. Abstract: This work addresses the problem of “user disambiguation”—estimating the likelihood of each member of a small group using a shared account or device. The main focus is on television set-top box (STB) viewership data in multiperson households, in which it is impossible to tell with certainty which household members watch what. The first main contribution is formulating user disambiguation as a predictive problem. The second contribution is a solution for estimating the likelihood that each individual in a multiperson household watches each TV segment. Kernel theories from the marketing, economics, and sociology literature inform the design of our method. This method learns priors for viewership in single-person households and then adapts them to the specifics of each multiperson household’s viewership history. Finally, we formalize two ad hoc heuristics that are currently used in industry (and research) for estimating audience composition of STB data and conduct a comparative analysis using simulated data, real large-scale viewership data, and a fully labeled panel-based data source. We find that our method has superior performance and practical value. The proposed solution has implications for advertisers, researchers who seek better understanding of TV viewership, and anyone using data generated by shared devices or accounts. A major TV provider has deployed this new method for use in its TV ad-targeting system. No personally identifiable information was gathered or used in conducting this study.
